Has anyone ever seen this? I have a question about it but I figure there's no point unless someone has actually seen it. And if anyone has, I applaud you.

You've posted 2 or 3 threads in the Entertainment forum and pretty much every time no one has any idea what you're talking about. Haha.

Yeah. I'm not surprised. Although this movie I'm amazed no one has seen. It's an old school cult horror classic. I figured at least one person on this whole damn board must've seen it, but I guess that would be expecting too much.

Well, if you're looking for a conversation, I know Dan (IamNietzche) is big on cult horror and horror in general. I don't think he comes around the Entertainment forum at all, though.

Yeah see I figured if anyone had seen it, he would have, but I wasn't sure if he came in here or not.

Haha yes! One of the best horror/suspense movies ever. It was an amazing movie for it's time. I haven't seen it in a while though. If you liked it I recommend Eyes Without a Face. It's a French horror movie from around the same time about a doctor who kidnaps women and cuts off their faces trying to transplant them on his daughter's mangled face. It's also one of my favorites. I'm gonna have to start hanging out in here more if these kind of threads are happening.

I was actually about to get that movie (EWAF) via Netflix. So now that you've seen this, have you seen Psycho? My question involves a camera angle from the two. In this movie, I think there's at some point a shot at the door opening, where you can only see the bottom half of the door, and it slowly opens, with a lot of contrast between the light and dark. Now is it just me or is this almost exact same shot in Psycho when Martin Balsam (the detective) starts walking up the stairs and Mrs. Bates walks out of the bedroom? And do you think this has anything to do with the fact that Clouzot beat out Hitchcock to buying the rights for Les Diaboliques by a matter of hours? Like as sort of a nod to Clouzot for making such a good movie (Hitchcock loved it).
[/nerdy question]

I've talked to alot of people about it actually and it's a very interesting thought. It is in fact the same shot and it is obviously deliberate on Hitchcock's part. As you said Hitchcock loved the movie and I believe publicly admitted that he wouldn't have been able to do it as much justice. There was definitely a playful sort of competition there which could have resulted in the writers of the book that Les Diaboliques was made from writing another book specifically for Hitchcock which of course became Vertigo... its really interesting.

Okay good, because every time I mention it to someone they just make fun of me for being such a nerd about it. And in a nice coincidence I was watching Vertigo this afternoon, even though I still don't like it very much.

I like Vertigo but it definitely isn't one of his best. My favorite is Saboteur.

To me Saboteur is like a lame American version of The 39 Steps, but that may just be because I saw The 39 Steps about 5 times before I saw Saboteur once.
And yeah, I don't get the fuss about Vertigo either. I think Kim Novak was kinda weak.
