Dancing With Paris – There’s Something in the Water
Record Label: Self released
Released: July 8, 2009
Who?
Canada is proving to be the place to search if you are looking for bands that hone the scream/sing formula. Just one look at the successful careers of bands like Silverstein and Alexisonfire proves this statement well, but there are plenty of others out there too. Toronto’s Dancing With Paris is one of them, and with the release of There’s Something in the Water, the band is working to make a name for themselves.
How is it?
To get one thing out of the way first: Dancing With Paris aren’t reinventing the wheel. This EP consists of pretty standard fare and little sets them apart from their peers. For those sick of metalcore, don’t even bother, but for those with an ear for heavier music, this band could very well appeal to you anyway, even if originality is lacking.
After a dull instrumental track, “Bled Dry” kicks in and proves to be an energetic tune perfect for the pit. The verses have guitar parts that sound very similar to ones you’d hear in a song by The Holly Springs Disaster. The chorus however mellows out to turn into a straight up rock song, complete with clean, audible vocals. The screaming itself varies. “Orange County” shows the band using a wide variety of shrieks; the high pitched is tolerable, but the demonically low ones are not. There are plenty of breakdowns in every song for those who love to mosh, and they keep the pace of the EP fairly fast. It never really slows down until “(Boardwalk),” which is simply a two minute instrumental with atmospheric guitar parts, perfectly leading into the next tune, “Hardwalk (Of Champions.)” Ultimately, the EP shows potential, but they’re going to have to work at creating a sound that’s uniquely their own to really stand out.
