I'll be interviewing James Montgomery, staff writer for MTV.com (http://www.mtv.com), in the very near future. He's the one who writes the articles we usually link here covering such bands as Fall Out Boy (http://www.falloutboyrock.com) and My Chemical Romance (http://www.mychemicalromance.com). Feel free to ask him anything pertaining to his jobs, bands, MTV as a whole, etc.; questions should be posted in the replies. Thanks!

Does he get told by higher ups what to cover? An example would be all those ridiculous articles about FOB's "beef" with the Killers. Were they done written simply just to drive internet traffic? or was he really interested in the subject and find them newsworthy?

It would seem that lately with bands like FOB and MCR gaining mass popularity, it's the first time in a long time that MTV has really focused on rock music. Do they rely on you to know the details about the bands you cover and report to them, or do they know a lot themselves?

what/who stops him from writing articles about good decent bands that he likes but doesnt write about?

How much freedom does he get when it comes to what bands to cover? Like is he only limited to bands that actually get rotation on MTV like FOB and HH or can he venture out a bit and try to get smaller bands more coverage maybe like a Circa Survive or Armor For Sleep or even Cartel?

What does he believe is the next big thing (if any) that will be remembered about music today. For example The Beatles in the 60's, Nirvana in the 90's, etc. What does he think will be the next revolution in music?

Why do you think underground acts are now embracing outlets like MTV and MySpace.com when bands like Dead Kennedy's tried to distance themselves from the corporate-minded side of the music industry only 20 years ago?

I wonder if he realizes that he comes across as a complete douche writing complete articles about blog entries...

How do you feel about some fans feeling that if they see a band on MTV that it is bad/selling out? MTV does enable small bands some great exposure but at the same time "soils" the name of the band. MTV isn't one for known for "origonality" and video/music knowledge...credibility has def been on a roller coaster decent.

Will you ever cover more bands on indie labels? Fall Out Boy was a band for a long time but only really got articals on MTV when they signed up to a major.

Many bands and artists dream of "making it" on MTV. Do you feel that, because you write for MTV, you have also reached the high point in your career. Or is MTV just another stepping stone to something like Rolling Stone? Where else would you like your career to go?

Do you listen to the music by the bands that you write about? If not, what do you listen to?

I second this question. I think it must be asked.
