I was just thinkin about this today, and was wonderin wut all of u guys thought. I would say the first band to do it would probably have been Pantera. Dime referred to the breakdown part in "This Love" as the "ass-stomp riff."
So what band do u guys think invented it?

No one band invented the breakdown. It was just a progression of music that turned it into what it generally is today. If you keep on going back it all depends on what you view your breakdown as.

exactly.
some people are referring to the "hardcore" beakdown (which can be traced back to Death) and some are referring to a traditional musical breakdown.

haha, I was joking about them being innovative by the way, if you didnt know. I truly do like Dear Love though. Mike's high screams are so good. Compare that with Roots and...wait...you can't. The screaming in Roots isn't nearly as good and that is being generous. I did like a few songs off Plagues though, not enough to replace Dear Love. Reptar is great

Listen to Stairway To Heaven in its entirety. Granted they may not have invented the breakdown, but that's the best, earliest breakdown I could scrounge up.

As far as hardcore goes, an early form of the breakdown was used by bands like 7 seconds (see Young 'Til I Die, 1884), but it was a more upbeat tempo change for circle pits. By the end of the 80s, the hardcore breakdown had developed into a heavier tempo change, exhibited by bands like the Gorilla Biscuits (see Big Mouth, 1988) and Judge (see Fed Up, 1988). In metal, I think the breakdown began appearing in the late 80s/early 90s with bands like Anthrax (check out Imitation of Life, 1986), Gwar (see Love Surgery, 1990), and Pantera (see Domination, 1990). These examples, however, are only based on my first hand knowledge, and I'm sure there are earlier examples.
