View Full Version : Manute Bol Is The Only Honest Man I Know

Jared Kaufman
03/22/06, 10:01 AM
After a conversation Buddy (Senses Fail (http://www.sensesfail.com)) and I had the other day, he was inspired to write the following.
I want to take this chance to be honest, and not think before I speak. I just feel as though so many people and so many bands are holding back. They are afraid to say what they really feel. They guard their image like filthy politicians not wanting the public to know that they are a backstabbing, blood sucking, perverted closet-monster.

I just hate the way this music scene has changed, especially this whole idea that black eyeliner "really gets the kids going." This is suppose to be about music, not making the style section of Teen People. That is the very sad part; it is no longer about the music for most of these bands. It is a competition to see who can jump onto the coat tails of a dying trend and sell the most records before they are stung by the mascara that is dripping into their eyes.

I just don't understand what people out there see in these bands. Is it the fact that they are just so fucking adorable that they get all the girls' panties tied into knots? It can't be. Can it? I thought they were supposed to be so dark and satanic with their all black outfits as they grace the glossy pages of magazines. I can just see them all now, crowded in front of a mirror backstage, fighting for the right angle to apply their make-up. They are so daring, aren't they? ...Trying to push an envelope that's already been licked, stamped and sent away years ago...

This is just a terrible regurgitation of glam / hair metal. It makes me actually want to throw up in my own hnds. The music, the scene, the lifestyle that I grew up in and want to protect as something sacred, is just a big fucking joke to everybody in it and for everybody that is looking in. It has become a race for each label to find the the most unoriginal band, get them in the studio, make sure they have the right clothes, haircut, "the look" and then stuff them down everybody's throat.

As with everything else, music moves in waves and circles. I just can't wait for the day that it all comes crashing down.

P.S. This is a battle cry for rock 'n roll.

Whatever you feel about this band, you can't argue that he isn't right here. This scene is getting worse and worse and I personally can't wait for it to fade out of the spotlight and go back to how it was about 4 years ago when it was thriving and the talent pool wasn't so diluted.

Nice! It's about time someone that people will at least hear says a word or two regarding how flacid the "scene" is becoming. Trying anything remotely divergent from the norm can hurt artists in this group. It's sad.

wasn't saying they weren't a cause of it. honestly, overall this whole scene has been taken over by negativity and people that have no clue what it's really about which is the music. I mean a person can't talk about how much they love a certain band or cd without people coming in and bashing it. It's just ridiculous.

This is funny, and I agree with him completely.
I went to one of thier shows, mostly to see saves the day and the early november, and some kid was wearing eyeliner, and I don't mean alittle bit he had it on like he was a super model. I laughed at him and called him out for it. I think I upset the kid, I felt bad casue it made his make up run.

stay out late
03/22/06, 10:18 AM
he barely even mentions the actual music except to say that so many bands out there are unoriginal, but i wouldn't exactly call senses fail original either. it seems like he's only concerned about the image that bands are putting out, but correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the music supposedthe important part here? i dont care if they're some "scene" underground band no one in the mainstream's ever heard of or ridiculously famous and all decked out in eyeliner and emo shields, as long as their music is fun to listen to. i honestly could not care less whether a band was a bunch of douchebags...if i like their music, i'll listen to them

Punk and Rock were always a way of rebelling, a way of getting away from the rigors of normal life. Music was the canvas that people used to express their emotions in an honest and brutal way.... Today the "scene" is where kids can join the group of "rebels" and feel different while being exactly the same.

point being, I understand Buddy's digust. And unlike most other people I never had a bad experience with the guys from SF, they were always cool to me.

rock and roll has been dead since 1979. this guy's band blows but he's right, punk rock really is seeming like hair metal part deux. punk rock today is what the boy band was 5 years ago. theres such little quality in this genre and i havent heard a really good album come out of it in three years with deja. it's a fucking fad. this "scene" that you people have is so lame it makes me sick. make up and girls pants. its so laughable to anyone who is not "punk rock." im so tired of the vast majority of music that comes from your genre because it all sounds exactly the same. all of it.

i would rather have a band that cared about the music, and not had to get together a little gimmicky look.
like...green day for thier new album? suits and ties, anti-flag? same thing...

so just because theyve been together for five years that makes them credible. I dont give a shit theyre just as bad as the new garbage that comes out now and theyve been responsible for bands like aiden and other crap getting signed just as much as hawthorne heights and mcr. he's got a fucking image himself now that I think about it, the last time I saw them, with saves the day, he came out in a bane hoodie with his head shaved and tattooed arms trying to be some kind of hardass. so he's a hypocrite I dont care what he defends as "rock n roll" cause he's the opposite of whatever it is.

-i don't remember him saying anything about drugs or sex, ease up straight edger.

But let's not forget that "It is a competition to see who can jump onto the coat tails of a dying trend and sell the most records before they are stung by the mascara that is dripping into their eyes." describes senses fail pretty well. screamo isn't exactly a justifiable genre. shitty guitar parts that aren't tech enough to be heavy, and aren't good enough to be catchy. So they cover them under singing/screaming cause thats the thign to do from 2001-2004. and make some pointlessly violent lyrics.

EX: "I had a dream last night and in my dream I robbed a country club.
A 5 year old tried to stop me, but I shot him through the head, and now he's dead."

why hasn't he saved this scene singlehandledly yet with genius lines like that?

A 5 year old tried to stop me, but I shot him through the head, and now he's dead."

why hasn't he saved this scene singlehandledly yet with genius lines like that?

i'm not calling him out for not being edge, i could care less. he's an asshole as a person that was my point.

ok buddy so be about the music and don't wear eyeliner. associate yourself with bands that see things the same way you do. those other bands are doing their own thing and some people dig it, some people don't. bottom line, you don't have to worry about it and if you find yourself associated with it, that's your fault.

Jared--

I misread the original newspost. Either way, I am not knocking you or Buddy. I am actually defending Buddy, saying that he can say whatever he wants, he is allowed an opinion just like everyone else.

It just seems to me to be for publicity and to get a rise out of people. This thread is 8 pages long already-- people love this kind of stuff.

It's not like he said anything people hadn't thought about before.

Now it just turns into "Did you hear what Buddy from Senses Fail said?"

Whatever--either way I am reading the thread myself. So I guess I eat it up, too.

stop whining and lead by example. obviously this isn't going to happen in the case of senes fail since they are terrible. a lot of kids are listening to emo/punk rock now, some people are calling it a trend and saying its just like boy bands a few years ago. i say look at the brightside, there are some good bands in the genre hopefully they will float to the top and get more listeners, then when the other fade the quality ones are left standing. complaining about how people dress is a waste of time, if a band isn't really about music eventually they should fade out and if they don't they're gonna have a horrible fan base(much like senses fails)

i think the best part about this is that when something really substantial happens or some really good bands go on tour together and it's announced on here, you'll have two kids that are appreciative, one or two that throw in their ignorant rant about how the band sucks.

then you have stupid views of band members who are ranting about everyone that they've toured with, are friends with, and are doing better than them, just to better themselves. fuck senses fail right in there stupid asses, these guys have never put out a piece of music that wasn't a direct rip off of someone else...music comes around full circle and you're the biggest example of it there, bud.

They're the next generation of Backstreet Boys really, not Senses Fail, just certain bands.

The first word that I thought of when I read this was "hypocrite". I was pretty much laughing the whole time I was reading this. And no offense (which I'm sure this will turn out offensive) but I find it funny that, I'm gonna say 80% of the people on here, say that they are tired of the "scene" too... yet they are pretty much contributiing to it.

Sorry if I'm the only one who doesn't get it at all.

Anyway, I'm tired of hating this "scene". Listen to music for what it is. Music. Not a style or way of life.

Okay feel free to hit me....

I know. All the people who "hate" the scene or whatever it is, support the damn thing, and look the same and dress the same.

I never make complaints about how people look, because I probably look the same way in a sense. I have shaggier style hair and wear band hoodies and jeans. So I can't rip on them. They do it for the same reasons I do it. So most of the haters only hate, so they don't rip on themselves.

The only complaints about the "scene" you'll hear from me is, everything sounds the same. I am not an offender of this. Most bands today, don't even get the time of day from me, so a lot of people like to bash my opinions. And for people to realize it's all the same, they gotta get technical and say this screamer sounds different or this band has one more guitar player. It's all the same. Take it or leave it. Most of the time, I leave it.

If anyone wants to be totally original and totally different "emo" isn't your "scene."

everyone seems to be going for the same image to get all the hot topic girls to sweat them and all the scene guys to worship them. its annoying as fuck because everyband looks the same.

personally, i enjoy senses fail. i know they're not really all that original, but for some reason i really enjoy their music. and the two times i saw them live, they were really cool. Maybe i just caught them on a good night though.

first of all, all of your maturity is shining, cuz if you were the least part mature, youd all get out of the mindset of stupid bullshit "cliques" cuz thats what this "scene" you speak of is, and realize, at the end of the day, its music. Is it possible to sound like you dress? Didnt think so. So why do any of you give a fuck? Im pretty sure Green Day turned on the makeup and went on to make the best cd of their career, and if you disagree than ill sit back and wait for you to write something better. In life their will be kids that just want to be cool. Not everyone can be as strong and credible as you, but god dammit, sometimes you just gotta suck it up and get over it, and stop basing your life off of what other people are doing. If you spend your time worrying about those bands with makeup or whatever, than your just as bad as the other people trying to fit into that mold. Honestly, I can care less if this "scene" dies out or not, im not here for the scene, fuck the scene, this scene can eat my entire ass, the reason im here is because the person i am, made me most succeptable to punk rock, (real) emo, and hardcore. I read a post from a kid saying "listen to say anything", and i agree for a differant reason, listen to the last song on the full length, theyres a line explaining how this scene has turned from the cool kids that once looked down on kids from the underground, and now the kids from the underground look down on the "jocks" that picked on them with no reguard for the golden rule. The only way we can bring the community...not "scene"...community...back to the good days, is if everyone just shuts it off. But it wont happen for the same reason that capitolism wouldnt work as a government, people are just flawed. Hence, my quitting on trying to do anything about it, and me ending my recidulously long rant.

alright, i know this is an old post, and old news, but here's something to think about...

i don't expect you to care about what i have to say...because i don't care what you have to say either.

a guy in a band said something about music. if that doesn't get him even a little credibility, than what does? at least he didn't try to talk about politics or anything.

speaking of which, i don't judge my music based on the bands thoughts and opinions of anything. for the same reason that pete rose should be in baseball's hall of fame, you should listen to the music you like regardless of what the band member's think. now i know it gets personal at times, like when the lead singer said hit to you at a concert or gave you the finger...but for the most part judge it for what it is...music.

this 'scene' that you speak of is bullshit when you think about. it's not a place, or thing, or anyone...it's a f'ing idea. and everyone thinks they have a better idea than the next person.

this entire website just reminds me of immature children...'my dad can beat up your dad'...instead of having that argument everyday, why not go home and tell your dad how much you appreciate him.

basically, support and enjoy your own musical tastes...and enjoy this site for the news it provides...don't bring it down by bashing bands that you don't like...because i don't care

i don't expect you to care about what i have to say...because i don't care what you have to say either.

a guy in a band said something about music. if that doesn't get him even a little credibility, than what does? at least he didn't try to talk about politics or anything.

speaking of which, i don't judge my music based on the bands thoughts and opinions of anything. for the same reason that pete rose should be in baseball's hall of fame, you should listen to the music you like regardless of what the band member's think. now i know it gets personal at times, like when the lead singer said hit to you at a concert or gave you the finger...but for the most part judge it for what it is...music.

this 'scene' that you speak of is bullshit when you think about. it's not a place, or thing, or anyone...it's a f'ing idea. and everyone thinks they have a better idea than the next person.

this entire website just reminds me of immature children...'my dad can beat up your dad'...instead of having that argument everyday, why not go home and tell your dad how much you appreciate him.

basically, support and enjoy your own musical tastes...and enjoy this site for the news it provides...don't bring it down by bashing bands that you don't like...because i don't care

nicely said, and i like the comparison to pete rose. and the idea of using your time to support a band instead of ripping on ones you hate, ive said this before a few times on this site, but there are kids on here who will just shoot it down because they will insist that your taste sucks and theirs is better. o well, i know its not gunna change, its a nice thought though
