Taking Back Sunday - Louder Now
Release Date: April 25th, 2006
Records Label: Warner Bros. Records.
Oh shit! Is Jason Tate reviewing the new Taking Back Sunday album? You know that's what everyone is thinking right now over at the record label and probably half those reading this little spectacle.
So let's get this started! Well, I'm not pulling any fucking punches, I'm not holding anything back, I'm not going to let anyone tell me what I can or can't write. Fire up those email accounts, the hate mail is sure to be flowing after this one, right?
Pause ... take a deep breathe ... the album is really good. Like, really good. It's closer to Northstar's Pollyanna then Where You Want To Be and only has a few songs I wish didn't make the cut. The lyrics are sharp and effective, the music is well timed and the production is crisp and clean (but not over done). There aren't really any strained screams or passionate vocals, but I found myself getting over it a lot faster with this release then I did with their last CD. I went into WYWTB with high-expectations and was let down, I went into Louder Now with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised.
The My Chemical Romance crowd is going to make Taking Back Sunday the next big thing. This album is going to sell a million copies, and the band's going to be on the cover of every magazine you don't want to see them on. Just accept it now.
I gave up wanting another Tell All Your Friends, hoped for not another Where You Want To Be, and got something in between that ended up making me extremely happy. To be honest, the music (and over all sound and presentation) isn't anything mind-blowing. I don't get knocked on my ass like I did the first time I heard TAYF, but the catchy repetitiveness is all there.
Sound out tracks include the opener (and obligatory album name dropper), "What It Feels Like to be a Ghost," the crazy catchy "Up Against (Blackout)," the future hit single "Twenty Twenty Surgery" and "Miami." I can't stand "Error Operator" and it should have been dropped from the album. The single "MakeDamnSure" is one of the two songs I'm indifferent about (the other being "My Blue Heaven") - I like them at times, and others I quickly hit the skip button.
Sometimes it just feels better to give in.
It took 5 listens of the CD for me to reject previous notions, accept new feelings, and fall for this CD. Give it a spin, give it a listen, while they may be a future guilty pleasure (I don't see this album having much staying power with me), they sure are fun to listen to right now (over, and over, and over again).
I still feel that with each album Taking Back Sunday get farther away from what made them unique, special, and defined their sound; however, this time I've just accepted that they've become a better version of all their copy-cats.
There, review's over - that wasn't so bad was it.
My Chemical Romance [Three Cheers...], Northstar [Pollyanna], Lorene Drive [Romantic Wealth], Emery [The Question]

are you nuts..?
" Sound out tracks include the opener (and obligatory album name dropper)" ... hmm. i think i can speak for all of us when the clip of "SPIN" is unreal.....to not mention that track is almost absurd..

I think this is an album people are going to have very strong opinions about. I like the single thats out now and can't wait to hear this "not revolutionary, but cool" sound. I liked WYWTB, and of course loved TAYF, im interested in where this will fit in between those two.

im really excited for this album. i liked a few songs on WYWTB, but overall it had way to much filler and bad tracks. from what i've heard of this, i think i'll like it.
and there live show is ridiculous.

Mr. Tate, Having rarley thought you were kind to TBS I'm pleasantly surprized. I do agree with you on how this album will be recieved. It shows a diversity and growth that furthers TBS talents. That being said I don't agree with any of the ratings, they are much to low. This cd will be tough to keep out of repetitive rotation. (double, double) See Jason that didn't hurt to bad.
P.S. Brummel, in your face bud!!, now you get my sig?

I think I errored on the high-side. Compared to the other albums I got recently, this CD is on the low end of what I'll be listening at the end of the year. Brandtson, Morrissey, Saves the Day are all on the high end.

Easy there killer. I was not insulting the feature of "Sounds Like" or whatever. I was commenting on your extremely limited range in camparing bands to others. Are there REALLY no other bands this album sounds like?
You compared the new Saves the Day to Taking Back Sunday for crap's sake. Sound nothing alike, really.

I'd pull obscure references out of my ass for the "sounds like" feature [which it's not, it's a FOR FANS OF feature] but that'd be pointless. The point is to compare or tell people who like certain genres, or popular bands, that they may like this reviewed album.
I didn't compare them at all, again, let's disect the words, "For Fans of" - scan those tree words, 9 letters, one more time and then get back to me.
Put any of your writers against me any day of the week: if a tree falls in the woods, and no one hears it, does it make a sound? You can take your so called pretentious "integrity" and "amazing" writers any day of the week ... I'll take talking about a release and having an opinion that people actually are interested in reading. Yes, I'm being a complete jackass, because I know you have to use my website to promote your own reviews - that's sad. I could write like Pitchfork if I wanted, I make a concious effort not to -- because relating to the music, to the review, to the words, and to the album is what's important. Sticking your nose up to everyone .. is not.

Let's begin by dissecting the three words, nine letters, of "For Fans Of" - turns out that doesn't say "Sounds Like" or "compared to" - it says (and means), "FOR FANS OF" exactly what the words say. Wow, what a concept.
I could toss my nose up and pile on the pretentious comparisons I find in pitchfork (and pitchfork wannabe) reviews all day long. That doesn't help anyone find new music, and it doesn't make a review good. It makes the reviewer a fucking asshole.
I read your next sentence and my initial jackass comment is, "if a tree falls in the woods, and no one hears it, does it make a sound" - because come on man, talking to yourself is just as pointless as using my website to promote your reviews.
Put your writers against me all you want, if I looked at this as a competition: I STILL WOULDN'T CHANGE HOW I WRITE REVIEWS. I write to connect, to explain, and to share an opinion on music and albums. That's all. I could give a shit about how many times I hit "Shift+F7" on my computer in order enhance an adjective. I care about the final product, and I care that people care about my opinion. Unfortunately, you wouldn't know what that feels like ... so keep being a dick, keep talking down to me, it just makes it so much sweeter when I see our numbers climb, and yours fall.
Asshole comment #2: Think about this, more people are browsing this thread right now then have ever read all of your reviews combined.

Taking Back Sunday - Louder Now
I still feel that with each album Taking Back Sunday get farther away from what made them unique, special, and defined their sound; however, this time I've just accepted that they've become a better version of all their copy-cats.
good review. you always seem to manage to describe my sentiments exactly.
I've only heard "Make Damn Sure" and "Error Operator" and couldn't even finish either track. Not because I hate the band, but because of the fan I used to be, and keep waiting for them to relase material that will excite me the way they once did.

In the interest of time, I will abridge my response.
1) By lumping in every contemporary successful band in the "For Fans Of" category, you are making yourself no better than all of the mainstream radio DJs and MTV scouts that look out there and say, "Oh the kiddies out there like BAND X - they have to like BAND Y!!" And really, it is just not fair. Comparing to the most popular and current bands out there is just lazy, and probably turns off more people than otherwise. I highly doubt someone is going to look at that and say, "Hey, I am a fan of TBS - maybe I ought to check out this Saves the Day." No, instead, I was saying, why not say that Sound the Alarm sounds like BAND Z to give the reader a sense of the record's sound, which is a little more relevant.
2) With regards to the way a review is written, it is not about using the thesaurus to make yourself sound smarter and upper-crusty. It is about taking the time to be careful with your words to reflect the time you put in to reviewing an album. I think most people would choose Pitchfork rhetoric over the words "It is good" any day of the week.
3) And, ahhhh, the ever-present ace-up-sleeve of site traffic. I know why you always bring this up. There is really no good comeback for this. But you just don't get it. The thing of it is, sure I AM jealous of all the traffic your site gets...who wouldn't be? But just because your site gets 43289437534 hits every fucking second or whatever, doesn't mean it is as good of a site as it should be. I see a lot more potential in this site than you would ever like to admit (which is why I had wanted to write for it), but you don't seem to want to do anything. I bet if you did a poll, there are a ton of people that come here for news, and go elsewhere for reviews. Maybe I am wrong, though. And the shit about this insult is that it would be more applicable had I started UBM and you started this. But alas, I am just a lowly reviewer that jumped on a few months ago.
I guess, in essence, I am being a dick because I think AP.net could indeed be more successful than even YOU believe.

So, like on your latest So They Say review, when you say "Recommend for fans of Hidden in Plain Viw" and they sound NOTHING like Hidden in Plain view, that's what you mean? WTF? Come on, at least practice what you're bitching at me about before you go off on a tangent. Second, you know why DJS and MTV do it? Because it WORKS. Telling someone a band sounds like a band they've never heard, is POINTLESS. And, I don't know if you were around during the whole STD/TBS craze, but when TAYF came out, people called them the new STD. Just so you know.

Maybe they would, but it's quite apparent that enough people like, "it is good" just as much as pitchfork rhetoric. And it's even more apparent that people like this supposed, "it is good" much more then whatever words you use in your reviews.

Then you completely underestimate exactly how successful we already are and how much our numbers jump every single day.
#1 - So They Say sounds a LOT like HIPV. Two vocalists, pop-punk tunes, big hooks, clean production? But whatever.
#2 - It is ignorant and incorrect to assume that people on this site have ONLY heard of four or five bands. Contrary to what you might think, some people research bands outside of those that get pimped on here.
#3 - I totally understand the impact of this site. However, just because Arby's is making money and people like it does not mean they give up on chasing McDonald's and Subway for #1. Just a thought - don't sell yourself short.

hey, i read UncleRico!'s review of Being and Becoming. I first heard the smashup on purevolume, i liked them so i told my friends about the band and everyone seemed to like it. i agree with the review posted on AP. i think the Being and Becoming is good and i question the 2 out of 5 stars given at upbeetmusic.com. does anyone else agrees????

Miami and 20/20 are the 2 worst songs they have ever come up with and error operator is a close 3rd The rest of the songs are decent but this album doesn't even come in the same ball park as where you want to be let alone tell all ur friends...My blue heaven is the only song with holding power and I'll let u live is a huuuge let down after slowdance....and is there a reason why brooklyn is not on the cd say in place of any of the previously mentioned horrible tracks...God damn me Miami blows...

jason tate is a pompous man whose musical intelligence i doubt. That review almost made me throw up becuase of that introduction. Someone needs to figure out that people don't even know who jason tate is... and that your last name is tate, so how much credibility do you have?

"I still feel that with each album Taking Back Sunday get farther away from what made them unique, special, and defined their sound; however, this time I've just accepted that they've become a better version of all their copy-cats."
agreed

I don't think they will ever be able to replicate the Tell All Your Friends sound which made them so special
I 100% agree with You

I've never understood what people have against Where You Want To Be. It's my personal favorite TBS record.
This one I find to be way too poppy. It seems like itlost the uniquity that the other TBS albums had. There's just isn't really anything to set these songs apart from any other pop-punk band.

makedamnsure is the best track on the album
Well, I am an Emery-Fan and I like "The Question". Besides I am gonna see them live in April, so I think I should give it a try. :)
