How do you switch between power chords, do you switch without hitting open strings once or do you do it like this:

D 4-4-4-4-4--0--7-7-7-7-7
A 4-4-4-4-4--0--7-7-7-7-7
E 2-2-2-2-2--0--5-5-5-5-5

I think Tom Delonge from Blink 182 always plays open strings before he switches chords.

hitting open strings in between chords is like a crutch, it's something beginners do to cover up that they can't change chords quickly enough. i wouldn't recommend doing it because then it becomes a habbit and you can't do it without hitting open strings, if tom delonge from blink does it that just means he isn't talented.

when changing power chords keep your fingers in the same position (so you don't have to make the chord shape again)and pick your fingers up slightly off the strings and move your hands to the desired frets in one motion.

don't try to play faster than you are able to start slow and eventually work up to the speed that it's played at on the cd, if you start too fast for your own ability you'll end up talentless and having to hit open strings between each note, like tom delonge.

Billie Joe Armstrom from Green Day plays the same way. It depends on which chord progression you are using to make those open strings sound decent. Bar Chords only Example...
What you are playing is F# and A which if you were to use the Bloodhound Gang chord progression of the vagina song; the open notes work really well like this....
D, open, A, open, A#, open, F#, open, D...etc.

But if you move a half step up or down on the chord progression the open notes sound nasty. Try it and let me know how it goes.

i dont do it normally unless it sounds good. some songs it sounds good to do.

Yeah same here, I just do it when harmony calls for it.

in most cases, but occasionally it actually belongs in the song. but for the most part it's a way of covering up the fact that the guitarist can't do fast chord changes.
