I kind of want to know so that if we're just fuck buddies i can go and find someone else to occupy the time he's not arround, but if we're an item, well, you know...

Yeah I would agree that talking to him is the best route. You will (hopefully) get a straight answer and know how to deal with the situation better. If he won't even give you that, then he's probably not worth your time.
