Japandroids - Post-Nothing
Record Label: Polyvinyl
Release Date: May 5, 2009

Remember the days when you dreamed of creating a garage band and going on to make music for the rest of your life with your friends? Meet the Japandroids (or JPNDRDS) doing just that, but way cooler than you. The Japandroids “lo-fi” rock album Post-Nothing has guitars blasting, cymbals being pounded, and the only two band members Brian King and David Prowse screaming their lungs out. The album runs short and sweet clocking in at only 35 minutes, but it’s definitely an exciting ride.

The structure of each song takes an interesting route with fuzzy guitars and frantic drum lines, but what I find most interesting about Post-Nothing is the lyrical content of the songs. It’s almost like the album was built on slogans, each song consists of very little lyrics or the repeating of one specific line or verse. This gives Post-Nothing it’s charm, the twosome shouting easily relatable words in each song making the album an absolute joy. The entire song will build off lines like “I don't want to worry about dying/ I just want to worry about those sunshine girls” and “Let's get to France/ So we can French kiss some French girls,” gaining momentum, increasing in their already incredible fervor. Post-Nothing is the epitome of the “summer album," so put the top down, crank up the volume and yell along to songs about girls, getting drunk, or just getting away.

Post-Nothing cannot be pinned down to just that though, while the album could be called immature, I find it to be an album about immaturity. Detailing the pleasures of being young, taking solace in your current position of pre-adulthood and all the responsibilities that come along with it.
As we drudge through the year still very much in the mist of the economic depression, dastardly high levels of unemployment that are still rising, and the dollar continuing to decline, Japandroids are the cure. Japandroids obviously have been sheltered from all of this up in Canada, because they have created the most feel-good album of the year. They throw you into the world of being a kid, forgetting your troubles and focusing on what is really important: love, friends, and having a good time. To steal from Japandroids method of writing songs, I will end this review in a short slogan that encapsulates Post-Nothing: SO MUCH ANGST!

angst, lo-fi garage rock, awesomeness

I'm into this album too, but I feel like the lyrics are a weak point. I like your take on them though.

Thanks, I find them hard to be a weak point when there is only a hand full in each song
