View Full Version : Old Dance Gavin Dance gives me wet dreams

EVERYTHING and all things Dance Gavin Dance. Granted I personally prefer the Jonny Craig era, but nonetheless all DANCEGAVINDANCE.
I'm listening to Downtown Battle Mountain and they were by far better than almost every band around. The guitaring on that album teamed with the drummer were epic. Mess's screams were unique and at first I hated it, but now, it's really quite impressive. And finally, Craig sang like the best of them. I would put him past Chester Bennington, and Stephen Christian for the top spot.
They weren't generic like the bands now, like their band now. 3:52 into Open Your Eyes and Look North- who does that shit. Its awesome, and original, and implemented perfectly. 2min22seconds into Surprise! I'm From Cuba- another epic ending to a song. And those two songs weren't even my favorites. The Untitled intro that leads into And I Told Them does it's job perfectly as And I hits harder with that lead in. Lemon Meringue showcases excellent guitar work- granted it sounds like alot of the work he does now, but since it's their first LP its impressive. Plus it is great singing. And finally Backwards Pumpkin Song is basically great Drumming and Guitar-work. It's like those two instruments are teamed up for that song, they are basically playing the same things with different instruments. It couldn't have been any better. And then Johnnys voice as always for that album was perfect.
Now I don't think Craig sounds that good in Emarosa because i think DGD had better musicians that made his voice seem like it fits. Emarosa has mediocre musicians therefore he stands out way too much. That's a good and bad thing.
I don't think that people that started with Downtown Battle can continue to like Happiness because that album sucks balls. I hope Craigs' side projects can somehow be as good as this was. A boy can dream.
Anyway, that's my rant, and believe it not it only took me 4 minutes to type this and hit submit.

The guitar player can't scream, it sounds quite horrible. New singer is generic, not bad, just not anything to write home about. Their previous effort was impressive so i'm not hating on him. Happiness is just bad.

Doubt it, people use that term all the time here. I use my personal favorite variation, douchenozzle, quite often as well.
And both DBM and Happiness are good albums. Agree to disagree.

Burning Down the Nicotine Armoire. Both parts one and two. The part that goes "Prescribed the throat, I need the antidote" in part two. Just because it's not CHUG CHUG CHUG doesn't mean it's not a breakdown.

Fair enough. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who thinks Untitled/Death Star is their best album. They really found a sound that worked for them, the album was catchy as balls and Mess was awesome. Happiness is very good, but I don't think it's quite as good as it's predecessor.

No, I love untitled way more than Happiness and DBM. You aren't alone! Alex English gets me SO pumped sometimes. If I ever see them at a bigger venue with an actual pit and they play it, Im definitely going in. Its just that I always see them at such a small venue which is still great.

I really liked the Selftitled, or untitled album whatever its called. It was littered with catchy and unique songs. I really don't know what they did there on Happiness. They've strayed from the path. However, without Craig it sounds completely different. I really wouldn't have minded a name change.

I don't get all the craig love...he has a good voice, but he just sounds the same on every song. Emarosa's snoozefest of an album is proof that it takes more then a capable vocalist to make an album.

dbm is a stellar record. they will never top it. s/t was downright horrid. happiness had no lasting appeal but was decent since they stopped taking themselves seriously with the new lineup. i'm looking forward to seeing jonny onstage with them on the upcoming tour though. should bring back the unique sound they once had.
they used to be great, but they've always had a generally stupid / scene kid / musically impaired fan demographic.

I think that if DBM had better production on it, I would enjoy it a lot more... Just the way it was recorded bothers me. It's so much less clear on the vocals than what I want to hear. Maybe it was on purpose, I don't know. Maybe I'm just crazy, I don't know. Just something about the way they recorded the vocals bothers me... I would love to hear Craig's voice as clear as I can hear the vocals on the two newer albums.
With that being said, I love the selftitled so much. I love every single song on the record. Alex English is a song you find trouble disliking, and it just continues throughout the record. It's just a good record.
Happiness has it's up and downs, but overall, it's Dance Gavin Dance. I don't care how they change. I'm going to love this band regardless, probably. Regardless of how "generic" they start to sound, the band is still DGD, and still has a sense of uniqueness to their music. I don't know how you can listen to Tree Village and dislike that song.
