The Crimson Armada - Guardians
Release Date: July 7, 2009
Record Label: Metal Blade Records

Ever since my Whitechapel review (although I gave it a good score and no I'm not hatin') I've been looking for something better in the deathcore genre. I'll be the first to tell you, The Crimson Armada doesn't bring anything new to the table and are not changing the genre but Guardians is a great album for any deathcore fan.

"Guardians" opens the album with vocalist Saud Ahmed belting out "Can you show me what it means to be alive?" He is quickly joined by speedy guitars and a very talented drummer. If there is one thing The Crimson Armada do best, it's their ability to play off each other. Guardians leans more toward furious drumming paired with catchy riffs, rather than arpeggios and solos. The band operates as a whole, and that includes the vocalist (listen to "Revelations" and "The Architect").

Vocalist Saud Ahmed not only has a sonic high scream and a deep growl but also has a pitch that seems balanced and in the middle (see "Revelations"). Ahmed's lyrics are nothing short of faith filled which leads to the assumption that they are a Christian band: "In the eyes of God/ I am his testiment" is just one example. Just because faith is involved in someone's lyrics doesn't automatically put them in the "Christian band" category (We learned this from Attack Attack! remember?).

Guardians may have been something we have all heard before but it's a decent debut. Lets hope something new comes out of their sophmore album. Don't we say that about every new deathcore/metalcore band that comes along, though?

Columbuscore; The Black Dahlia Murder; Born of Osiris; Rose Funeral; all with "faith-filled" lyrics

That's what I'm calling it because every band from ohio sounds like this now.

Obviously you aren't an avid musician. My jaw dropped when I heard the insane guitar riffs and the solid blast beats. Such a talented and under rated band deserves a lot more attention. I've followed these guys from day one since they are from my home town in Columbus Ohio. They've greatly improved their sound. It's beyond comprehension. The album art is PRETTY sketchy. but the musc makes up for it with ease.

Learn how to play guitar, and listen again.

Did anyone else notice that drum intro to A Filthy Addiction is almost exactly the same as the one Miss May I used in Architect?

I think Sturgiscore is a better name for this due to 9 out of 10 of these kind of bands' albums being produced by Joey Sturgis.

I love Joey's recordings, but he needs to stop prodcing every single midwest metalcore band.

Yeah Joey is definitely good producer but hearing his production on every single band from the Midwest that sounds like either The Devil Wears Prada or At The Throne of Judgment (or in the case of Miss May I, both) just gets irritating.

His production on Oceano's album was one of the only redeeming factors on that album though :P

yes, they are by no means amazing, their music IS rather generic, but none the less, they are good for what they do.
