Voice coach Melissa Cross, the self-proclaimed "Queen of Scream" who has developed a training program that teaches proper technique to a new breed of unrestrained rock singers (a list that includes Slipknot's Corey Taylor, Randy Blythe of Lamb of God, and Keith Buckley from Every Time I Die) talked to Robert Siegel on NPR's "All Things Considered" about her techniques and the philosophy behind them. You can listen to the segment here (http://www.npr.org/dmg/audioplayer.php?prgCode=ATC&showDate=21-Mar-2006&segNum=8).

what makes all three of those vocalists great? they have fantastic sounding screams but still retain a lot of clarity in their voice. you can make out their lyrics and still feel pummelled by how in your face they are.

Awesome. I've wondered about this for a while and my sister and my mom had no idea despite their professional voice training.

i've wondered the same thing. i think i can do a good scream but, it kills me after 5 or 10 minutes and i can't sing at all after that.

she has a lot of clients who have excellent screams (36 crazyfist, thursday, underoath, a static lullaby, ill nino)

if i had 30 dollars to spare right now, i would def buy this dvd. hmmm, i wonder if netflix has it. haha

EDIT: nope. not on netflix :(

It sounds like this guy is kind of hating. She is so happy to be on the station, but I dont know, it sounds like he's maybe making fun of them.

I've had the dvd for about a month, and i absolutely love it. It's called The Zen of Screaming but it's more so about breath control and projection. She doesn't teach you how to scream. she just teaches you how to use your voice properly without losing it after 10 minutes. I can go through a 45 minute set of pretty much all screaming without getting hoarse because of this dvd.

Are you being serious?

yes, i'm being serious. npr is the closest thing america has to unbiased news reporting and, even if you don't agree with that, it's fucking light years better than anything else on the radio. but, you go ahead and waste your time listening to howard stern complain about his life, that's GOOD radio.

exactly, it's good intelligent radio. I can't really see why anyone would hate npr

and no, the guy's not making fun of her. all thing's considered is a segment where they explore "new" ideas or happenings and look at it with an open mind. the guy clearly doesn't understand why anyone would considering screaming part of music, that's where his hesitant tone of voice comes in.

Hahaha, dude...I don't even listen to the radio, unless I'm in the car with someone who is, or I'm in the kitchen, because that's where our bird is. And even if I am listening to the radio, it is to listen to music, not to listen to half-asleep people mumble about whatever for hours on end. To me NPR is just completely boring...the people sound way too laid back. I don't see why anyone would listen to it.

I am getting owned simply because I don't like something others do? I didn't know that was a reason for one to get "owned". How fucking stupid.

ok, sorry, 13.

other than car talk and the variety shows on saturday and sunday afternoons, npr is like 95% news and current events. late at night it switches over to bbc world services, that's like the gold standard of news across the world. maybe in the crazy shadow dimension where you live you can separate 'npr' and 'news,' but here in our world, you can't.
