imagine if in the bible, it clearly stated that the reason "gravity" existed... is because god is using his absolute power to push us down, so we and all things on earth stay on earth and don't float around... even though we have amazing scientific evidence to say otherwise... teachers would not be able to tell students about "gravity" because it goes against what the bible says... thats the good thing about religion, using absolute ignorance.. but it being backed up by an "infallible" source... so there is absolutely no room for growth, all you need to do is have an open mind and realize that many of the writings in the bible ( and most all of religions very early writings) do have false statements, and were written in a very "war-like" time, where not much knowledge was accessible, instead of backing it up with the thought of it being "infallible", it would be nice to move on and progress thoughts of religion instead of being stuck with a very primitive view on god and how the earth works.. theres my 2 cents at least...

one other thing i think is funny, is that with humans interacting with earth the way we are.. (putting tons of chemicals/pollution/new types of hormones.. and all that pretty stuff) animals are having to evolve faster and faster just to be able to survive.. and you don't even have to look into past centuries to see how things evolved, there are actual cases now, where organisms have evolved drastically in just our lifetime, which is basically unbelievable, how do you argue evolution when an organism evolved drastically in JUST OUR LIFETIME??? (and i'm not even getting into how virus's and diseases evolve within a matter of years) takes a lot of ignorance to call evolution bogus, haha, its beautiful

What's sad is that you have so many anti-religious people trying to force any type of non-evloution story out of the schools, then on the other hand you have religious people trying to cram a specific story into the science room.

Leave the Biblical stories for the philosophy and religious classes, and mainly at home with the parents. And leave the different theories of evolution for the science room.

anyway, i find it hilarious that the christian right and conservatives in general actually strive to make us MORE ignorant. even in schools, which are designed to TEACH, they would rather push their own backward agendas than allow children to have a proper education. i suppose these arkansas people want to teach the crackpot "intelligent design" theory instead?

evolution happened. it is a provable fact. yes, darwin's theory has a few slight holes but the basic concept of evolution takes no faith to believe. besides, there is no theory even close to comparable to darwin's out there. until there is, we will continue to teach his. and when there is, i am sure it will just be a modified version of the current theory anyway.

Yah, that's completely false. Haha, wtf? They not allow it taught in your school? You can watch fossils and watch organisms actually evolve. No faith, just perception. The idea of HUMAN evolution from monkeys may not be completely provable at this point, but evolution itself is most certainly is (unless you believe the devil did it - and placed the dinosaur bones around like some religious people I've talked to).

tate covered this. we know evolution has and continues to occur. it is called the "theory" of evolution becuase we do not know for sure HOW we evolved yet. even intelligent design agrees that evolution took place, it just states that it happened with the assistance of some higher power.

Best thing to do, which is hard to do with junior high kids and sometimes even highschool kids, is when you go into a science class. You as the teacher have to pound it into the kids brains on day one, that everything being taught in the class "works under the assumption" that darwin's theory is correct.

Doesnt mean Darwin is correct, doesnt mean whatever religious believe you hold to be wrong. Simply means that for scientific purposes you assume the best scientific theory is correct. Because if you don't, parts of the class if not the whole class is pointless.

intelligent design is not even considered a valid theory. any understandinhg of the scientific method will tell you this. it has completed almost zero of the steps needed to be qualified as a theory. a couple years ago, some guys came up with the previously-mentioned flying spaghetti monster theory, which states that a flying spaghetti monster is responsible for all life on earth, and goes into great detail about this. it has gone through ALL OF THE SAME steps as intelligent design. so what is the difference? if intelligent design should be taught, why not the FSM theory or any other crackpot theory?

other ideas are not shut out. if there were other scientifically valid theories out there, they would be taught. public schools do not have the time to teach every theory that some radical group has concocted. teaching kids evolution and letting them know that darwin's theory is not 100% provabale and that other theories do exist is sufficient, merely because no better alternative exists.

if you are referring to intelligent design/creationism, nobody has worked their asses off. the intelligent design theory has been handled with extreme laziness and belligerence. it was created as a rebuttal to darwin's theory, not as its own idea. its supporters seem to think that they are above science becuase they are christian.

This just in: It seems that the second coming of Christ actually happened in Arkansas, a year and a half ago. Upon arrival, "Jesu" saw what had become of his father's teachings, and bluntly decided that he wouldn't go through a second round of suffering et al. because, frankly, the human race just wasn't worth it. In an official statement, the "Son of God" had the following to say: "You are a bunch of idiots. I can't believe I had to go through all of that two milleniums ago just so you could twist, deform and completely misunderstand my teachings to get to this point. I mean, come on!!! I can't even find the words to express the disgust I am feeling right now! At least the romans used logic to guide their actions!" Right after writing that last sentence, Jesu requested a gun and put a bullet in his brain, therefore returning to his righteous place next to his father. Since then, they have both given up on the human race and spend most of their time playing Gran Theft Auto, which they say is now human kinds greatest invention.

I think this is all so messed up. I am a substitute teacher in florida, and I've taught the same 5th grade class for the last 3 months. I've talked openly about the theory of evolution many times, mostly in order to get rid of misinformation. My kids didn't know anything about darwins theories, so I told them about it. why the hell shoudln't kids hear about these things, as long as they are presented as theories? they don't have to be told about creationism. . .they get that shit at home.

I always get fired up about educational issues. . .me and both of me parents are all educators, and we take it very seriously. you tend to do that when your really actually involved in the kids, and see how the fucked up political shit gets in the way of actually teaching them about this world.

i have a lot of things to say, but will only touch on a few things.
first off, gravity technically isnt a 'law', although almost everyone was raised hearing this. our notions of gravity are continually evolving. we considered it 'law' when newton told us how it was. however, when einstein presented his theory of general relativity, it basically redefined our notion of what gravity was and how it functioned. going further with this, we still dont know what gravity really is or how it truly works, we just have a THEORY in the form of our best explanation based on observation and experiments thus far. our concept of gravity will no doubt have perpetual change throughout ours and future generations lifetimes.
which brings us to what a theory is. a scientific theory takes all the possible accumulated observation and experimentation on observable phenomena, and provides the best explanation for that phenomena (most often in mathematical form due to its logical design). evolution theory, too, is put into mathematical form in order to more precisely present statistical distribution of genetic fluctuations, geographic spread, and complexity of life forms. id and creationism are NOT theories in the least because they do not take into account all the currently observed and experimented characteristics of the phenomena of life.
in closing, the governor of arkansas is a retard. im suprised someone with such a lack of scientific understanding could be placed in such a powerful public position. it really is scary to me. the fact that he doesnt even understand the idea of a scientific theory is even scarier. did he even go to college?
p.s.
this is a totally random point, but if you want to see a real world application of the scientific method, look at Toyota. the reason they pwn the auto industry is for this very reason. they do not make any changes to their infrastructure or operations without establishing controls, tests, and correlations of everything affected by a possible change. maybe the government should take a hint ;-)

I've researched intelligent design before and it's bullshit. It's now 2 AM but to briefly summarize:

A key facet of science is the process of investigation, which is often referred to as the scientific method. The National Academy of Sciences, a government created corporation, states that, “Scientific investigators seek to understand natural phenomena by observation and experimentation. Scientific interpretations of facts and the explanations that account for them therefore must be testable by observation and experimentation.” The focal point of this process is creating an experiment that can be used to test a theory and assert whether it is legitimate or it is not true. This process is used to explain theories in chemistry, biology, physics, and other areas of science. Yet in this case, the idea of intelligent design cannot be tested because it lacks naturalism. The National Academy of Sciences continues to explain, “This contrasts with science, where any hypothesis or theory always remains subject to the possibility of rejection or modification in the light of new knowledge.”

Along these lines is an issue with the foundation of an experiment, a hypothesis or theory; “To a scientist, a theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that has been tested and backed up by evidence” (Kauffman, 2005). Concurrently, Daniel C. Dennett, professor of philosophy at Tufts University states that “to formulate a competing hypothesis, you have to get down in the trenches and offer details that have testable implications. So far, intelligent design proponents have conveniently sidestepped that requirement.” It seems that despite the scientific implications of intelligent design, the lack of experimental testing and the scientific method, two fundamental qualities of a science, leave a large gap between intelligent design and science.

The NAS also finds that “no body of beliefs that has its origin in doctrinal material rather than scientific observation, interpretation, and experimentation should be admissible as science in any science course” (et al, 1999). Even if it were to be assumed that this belief were true, ignoring scientific proof, the belief that an intelligent designer created this world is in itself quite paradoxical. Surely if this world were created by an intelligent designer, that designer must have originated from somewhere, requiring a designer to create him, making said original designer secondary. This series could continue infinitely, ultimately leading to no single designer. As Keith Lockitch said, “One does not explain complexity by dreaming up a new complexity as its cause.”

Although the theory of evolution is considered to be a belief, there is sufficient evidence and concrete examples that support its existence as a form of science. One major goal of science is to be able to explain why certain things we observe happen using known laws and properties. For example, physics can explain why a gun recoils when shot, chemistry can explain why mixing bleach and ammonia releases chlorine gas, and biology can explain why two species of birds are related. However, when considering intelligent design as a science, it lacks the ability to explain why things are how they are using such laws or properties. Instead, Dennett claims, “To date, the proponents of intelligent design have not produced anything like that . . . No observations from the fossil record or genomics or biogeography or comparative anatomy that undermine standard evolutionary thinking.” The concept of intelligent design is merely an offered explanation to why biology, evolution, and the current world as the way they are. It does not prove why things are in a certain state using tested and proven scientific fact. Instead it relies on mere speculation to justify the reasoning that it can explain why certain phenomena occur. The lack of empirical evidence supporting the concept of intelligent design leaves yet another important facet of science out of the picture.

But hey, I guess I just read the wrong books.

Well, we're taught evolution in my public school. No mention of creationism or anything. It goes both ways. Political correctness is the worst thing ever.
