Use this thread to discuss the wonderful genre. Post recs, favorite bands/albums, etc.

I think various emo mixtapes would be cool to post as well. I'm always looking for more emo music, as I'm sure other people are so this would be awesome.

I'm kind of new to emo music but here's some albums I've checked out that I really enjoyed.

One Last Wish - 1986
Cap'n Jazz - Analphabetapolothology
Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind of Cadwallader
Rites of Spring - End On End
Embrace - self/titled
The Promise Ring - 30 Degrees of Everywhere

They're all pretty basic but I'd recommend them.

Been meaning to give Elliot and Mineral a listen, too.

I am. Brand New is my favorite band. The subject matter on TDAG gets me in a depressed sate of mind. It's awesome. Like it or not, even though they matured from YFW to Deja to TDAG, they have been consistent with writing some pretty emo lyrics. Not the typical "cut my wrists and black my eyes" bullshit, but they write depressing stuff.

Funny thing about "emo" is everyone seems to have a different opinion on what's "emo" and what isn't...that's why I'm not a fan.
Also, some people who listen to the Rites of Spring also like Minor Threat, even if they arent "emo", so that's why I recomended them.

The only issue here i think is that emo goes beyond 'depresseding lyrics' to a definition of the genre being more heavily weighed on characteristics of song structure, instrumentation, stage performance, etc. Brand New doesn't fit the description there. They capitalize on what Grunge did (Nirvana primiarly as an example) with soft-loud songcraft, guitar and vocal heavy, and Jesse Lacey writes music with hooks. Brand New is more pop than emo.

This debate on who is and isn't "Emo" is a flashback to 2003.

In the 90's, "Emo" was used to describe bands that people had a hard time putting in one of the existing genres. This label was later changed to "Indie".

In this shitty decade it's been a 1-10 scale where Coverge was a 1 and Chris Carraba's menstrations were a 10.

I'd say the Promise Ring is the prototypical "Emo" band in both the older and newer sense.

You can't really define "emo."
It has meant different things in different eras. Emo was originally used to describe bands like Mineral, Texas Is The Reason, Fugazi. However, as emo grew more and more popular, the mainstream music media grew dumber and dumber. By the time the next generation rolled around, the media was labelling not only bands who drew an influence from the original "emo" acts as emo, but also the acts that had a similar fashion statement to these bands. Some of these acts were lyrically more depressing than previous emo acts (where the emotional aspect focused on both happiness AND sadness), and many played poppier music, hence depressing lyrics and pop punk was now under the mainstream's umbrella term "emo". When bands like Hawthorne Heights, Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance, and Panic! At The Disco rolled around, they fit in with the expanding definition of emo.

The only thing i don't get is how Brand New can be 'emo' to one person. Why does that one genre have different definitions for you? Not in anyway trying to poke or harass you, just an honest question.

To me, their songs can make me feel very emotional and sad. When I hear the word 'emo' strewn about, that's what I think about.

But the problem is that "emotional" and "emo" don't mean the same thing. "Emo" connotes a specific stylistic derivative of the hardcore punk scene and really isn't related to the "emo" that you're thinking of and that MCR fans think they're listening to. Just because it's emotional doesn't make it "emo."

what did you end up enjoying out of those hardcore bands some of us mentioned for you to check out?

Well, I haven't spent enough time with them to have favorites yet, but none of them didn't appeal to me. It's just a lot, and I tend to randomly be in moods for heavier music, and then not so much, so it'll take awhile to really get into all of them. Life in Your Way stuck out immediately because I had already heard "Salty Grave" from my friend, and I bought a used copy of Stretch Arm Strong's Rituals of Life. (Apparently my old youth pastor loves them, lol.)

Lol, I don't get a rise from "prestigious user." As you said earlier, 10k+ posts does not equal level of expertise. It only means that user spends more time in ap's forums.

Really? Haha. Prestigious or not, I bet you know very little about this genre.

You're wrong.

Well yeah. But even though I'm 15 years old and listen to some pretty shitty music, that doesn't mean I can't like "good" music. I mean, I made the thread for Christ's sake. Why would I have made it if I didn't know shit about the genre?

1) I don't find "emo" to be good music, solely beccause it's not for me.
2) Who cares who made the thread.
3) Never said you didn't know anything about the genre, but I definitely would take someone else's word over yours for reasons I already gave.

Get hold of 'Siamese Dream' by The Smashing Pumpkins and 'October Rust' by Type O Negative.
And while you're at it get 'The Division Bell' by Pink Floyd.

My definiton of good music.
You'll like them, believe me.

Empire! Empire! are an active band, and The Gloria Record was Chris Simpson's (Mineral) band after them, so if you're into Mineral you should like them.

You're quite knowledgeable when it comes to this genre, correct? I'd rather not try digging through the junk in this thread to find good emo recommendations. All I know about is the obvious Sunny Day Real Estate. What are some other quality albums I should give a shot?

Ha, guess that's vague. Well, I enjoy a lot of music but am truly familiar with far too little, so what are some of your favorites? We could start there. (I guess I could mention some of my random favorite bands, but I don't know what would actually help this recommendation process out.) Maybe mention some more accessible emo bands first?

The reason I ask you is there's like four or five bands in that scene that everyone rips off, and many times the difference between a "good emo band" and a "bad one" is based around whether you identify with the lyrics, which may or may not be extremely shitty anyway.

I could be lazy and just say download the staples:

Saetia-A Retrospective
City of Caterpiller-s/t
Orchid- Dance Tonight Revolution Tomorrow or Gatefold/Self Titled
Mineral-The Power of Failing/ SDRE

but a lot of those are mediocre at best. I mean, I hate the Saetia record. It was one of the first i downloaded and i liked it back then, but as i got more into the music lyrics like "there is no happy here" just seemed so terrible. That's what happens. I love the shit out of orchid because they sing about foucault and situationist philosophy and encourage more fluid gender roles/sexualities, but you might not like that band because you don't relate to that ideology, you know?

So, what kind of hardcore/heavier bands are you into? Answering that question would help me out a lot better, because i could at least throw some bands your way that sound kind of like your taste and you could decide on your own which bands have terrible lyrics.

But, there are a lot of people here that got into this song, so i'll recc it as well.

True about the ideology thing. If there are any Christians in the genre that make pretty good music that isn't laughable (though maybe you find all of it laughable?), I'd be interested in that.

As for heavier bands I enjoy... Thrice is my favorite band, and As Cities Burn is also up there. I've always loved the catchiness and dual vocals of Showbread's No Sir, Nihilism is Not Practical album. (On a similar note, I do have one Blood Brothers album, Crimes, and enjoy the general sound of that album a lot.) I'm only passingly familiar with Thursday, but I've enjoyed everything I've heard of theirs. Hm... Also a fan of The Chariot, Zao (The Fear is What Keeps Us Here), mewithoutYou, and some Converge.

Ha, I have no idea if that mass of random "heavy" bands will help you help me at all, but hopefully it does.

EDIT: Also, I do enjoy that video you posted.

the only christian bands (or actually they're probably just christians playing in bands, i don't know if they labeled themselves) that i can think of are Halo Perfecto, Palatka, and Mineral. Halo Perfecto and Palatka share members.

Thursday ripped off You and I pretty hard at times.

Some other bands you might like are:
The Assistant
Heroin
Hot Cross (mainly just their album Cryonics)
Antioch Arrow
The Encyclopedia of American Traitors

I could see someone who likes thrice maybe getting into some of the whole post-rock/screamo shit like envy, killie, city of caterpillar, and this band called pianos become the teeth that a lot of people here are jocking hard.

i don't know, maybe that helps.
