What where the first songs you heard that got you into punk music?

For me it was Violins by Lagwagon and Summer of '69 by MxPx.

Kerplunk was the first true punk album I ever bought, but it wasn't until Dookie that I really got into the genre. Welcom to Paradise, When I Come Around, She, Longview....that's my 'punk foundation.

Green Day I guess. When I was younger I loved everything they did. As I got older I liked different punk bands such as Blink 182 etc.

Basket Case.

yea i guess i could say that too. The first tape I ever owned was Green Day dookie when I was in 5th grade and I didn't get into Minor Threat until 6th. But it was Minor Threat that really "got me into" punk I would say because when I heard Green Day I just really liked it, but when I heard Minor Threat I said "wow I must get more of this kind of music"

Right. My point exactly. If it weren't for Basket Case I wouldn't like what I like now. I wouldn't have led the musical adventures that I've lead. I would say Basket Case got me into punk, but it was MxPx that took me through a lot of it after that.

Probably something by Blink, Sum 41, or MxPx. My friend's mom bought him Take Off Your Pants and Jacket when we were in like fourth grade, and I loved it. And I remember hearing "Everything Sucks" by MxPx on FUSE once.

Well I don't consider any of the things any of you put down punk except for Bad Religion and, maybe, the Offspring (but only early on).

I suppose the first punk band I got into was FEAR, I think this song was probably the one that did it for me:

Ew, Jawbreaker were like the beginning of the end in my books, they weren't terrible but they marked the start of the transition from punk to the bowling for soup shit that came about later on. I guess it was about then-ish that punk lost its balls.

Ya I knew putting "songs that got you into punk" was a little vague considering everyone's differing opinions of what punk is. Maybe I should have put songs that ultimately got you to AP.net.

just an aside...not trying to stir up a debate but you would consider early Offspring punk and not NOFX and Lagwagon? Interesting.

wait what? you don't consider Generation X to be punk? You don't consider Minor freaking Threat, imo the best punk band of all time, to be punk? I agree there is a lot of stuff in here that I don't really consider punk, but certainly you jest that Bad Religion and Offspring are the only two real punk bands listed? (I see you at least later listed Black Flag).

I started listening to (good) punk when i started listening to the album "Explode" by The Unseen. The song that stuck out was False Hope or Tsunami Suicide.

Good Charlotte in fifth grade, no lie.
But then what REALLY got me excited about the genre was Green Day's music. I'm sure this is the same for countless others.

Tbh I'm not sure about Lagwagon but I don't really consider NOFX a punk band, but I'm not too sure why, maybe because its "skate-punk" which I like to ignore. I will say this though, NOFX are very punkish live. I prefer a good old fashioned riot but what they do is good too and still very punk.

Okaaaaay so I guess they are a punk band.
Doesn't mean I like em though

I do actually consider Minor Threat to be punk, I just forgot to write that one down. Generation X strike me more as a band playing punk than a punk band, they were completely without attitude. They were lacking that extra bit of punch.

Yeah, it really was a shame when Wattie (frontman of the exploited) turned out borderline racist.

Because I'm not at all removed from the cliched userbase of this site, I was in love with Take This to Your Grave (and still am, removed from guilt) around the fall of '03. It lead me to contemporary powerpop/scene music, which lead me to this site, which lead me to New Beat by Refused via a video posted her around '05, which lead me to other stuff, which eventually lead me to the first wave of punk (mid '70s) and the stuff it spawned from (protopunk, blues).

I dig that fucking Fall Out Boy.
