View Full Version : I miss this kind of music

I know the whole "neon / crunkcore" has been bludgeoned to death but I long for yesteryear when music meant something to me. Call me an aging hipster, but it's come to the point where I miss the days of emo. I'm 25 years old and I remember the days back in high school when friends told me about the Get Up Kids, Alkaline Trio, and At the Drive In. I know emo has come to represent ghost-like skin and dyed black hair. Yet, I remember when I first learned the term "emo," it was in the liner notes of an Asian Man Record comp that described the band Tuesday (Dan Andriano from Alkaline Trio's old band). Since then, I immersed myself into the Vagrant Records catalogue circa 2001. Saves the Day, Hot Rod Circuit, Koufax, the Anniversary were all terrific bands. I wish I appreciated them more back in the day. By the time I hit college, I was listening to Brand New's "Deja Entendu," Thursday's "Full Collapse," and Taking Back Sunday's "Tell All Your Friends." I miss that sense of teenage angst that was captured in punk rock mentality and post-hardcore melodies.
Nowadays, young bands seem too caught up in long, unshampoo'd hair, bright colored t-shirts, and boning underage groupies. In the past couple of years, I found myself to listening to 80s college rock bands such as the Pixies and the Replacements. Yet, this fall I am greatly looking forward to new records by Brand New, Thrice, Say Anything and Every Time I Die. So I tend to have faith in the future. I'm just wondering if anyone else my age shares the same mentality. As I write this, I'm enoying music videos that put a smile to my face...

You know, back when you were like...5? 6? 'emo' wasn't a villianized, hated term. As a matter of fact, it described enjoyable music. Then stupid little shits invading the scene and the media got a hold of the term. Now? Good luck trying to call Weezer 'emo', but they were emo to me when I was in 8th grade. ::shrugs::

AAANNNND here we have what's wrong with the music scene. Who cares what they are? Genres are just for lumping similar sounding bands together, it's not an end-all situation. For most people, different bands end up in different genres just because of what they hear or how intensive their knowledge of music goes. It doesn't change the songs, however.

I'm 28 and I'm I agree with deFobbed14yrs and Josh. Back then emo for us was Dashboard, Acceptance and Jimmy Eat World etc. I also get nostalgic thinking about those years. Such great music. But yeah, emo now has taken a completely different persona.

Dude, there will always be a generation gap in music. Especially within "the scene". Back when pop-punk was king, all the old schoolers were bashing that. Now that crunkcore is king, the last generation bashes that. It's cyclical, it'll never end. Everyone relax.
With that being said, "Nothing Feels Good" is an awesome book, The Promise Ring is awesome and so are The Replacements.

I empathize with the OP
and I'm going to go ahead and generalize this to "I miss sincerity in this sort of music".
Yeah, maybe it's a generation gap or something of that nature, but if you look at it outside of a timeline, you are basically going to see that Saves the Day were/are sincere, and the other bands in question lack most semblances of the word. The "scene" has more or less completely cut any ties it has ever had with punk, indie, or any of the ethics of either of those. It has become a complete corporate creation, marketing 80's revival frivolity.
And to be perfectly honest, if that's your thing, go for it.
There's still music like this being made under the radar, dude. It's easy to get down about how things have gone, but if you look at it as more of a "less than amicable split" between two crowds of music makers/fans, then it's a lot easier to not get so hung up on it. I'll find ya some of the better pop/rock/poppunk/"emo" bands of the later years, rar 'em up, and send 'em to you :-)

I would not credit this entirely to a generation gap. The sound has been capitalized/marketted a great deal in recent years, and this causes a decline in the quality/honesty of the genre.

I think you guys are shitting yourselves a bit on the quality of the music you listened to and what the kids listen to nowadays. I know, it makes perfect sense to think that you were completely different when you were 15 than these kids that are 15 now, because obviously you're all musical geniuses and they are the dumbest kids ever, but come on, there's not that big of a gap between what you guys when you were kids and these kids. You know in 5-7 years all of the 15 year olds now will be bitching about the music the 'kids' are listening to as you guys are doing now. There's not much special about what you listened to, there's not much special about what they listen to, and there's not going to be much special about what future scene kids will listen to, because guess what? When you're 15 you don't know shit about music, or anything else, for that matter. You think you do, but really, you're just an stupid, awkward, hormone crazed child. I know this is going to start a lot of shit, but whatever, I speak truth regardless. Let the cycle of old hating young continue in perpetuity!

this.
people in this thread may think they're smarter than everybody else for saying its all about generation gap, they may think they're offering unique insight (news flash: you're not), but its clear to see that even just a few years ago the images and gimmicks were nowhere near as flamboyant on a regular basis with the older scene bands as with the new ones. the recordings were less tailored for artificial quality as well. the older bands may not have made music that was any more professional or well-written, but it was more honest. i mean did you guys forget about the sweeping "myspace age" with the play-adders and friend-adders that they used strictly to create the illusion of marketability? have you guys HEARD matt squire's post-2004 production? -- that guy is now the kingpin of recording in this industry and it has furthered the descent of the integrity in "pop-punk" music. those are not tactics that honest bands use, and they hardly existed before 2005.

oh fuck that i'm talking about the mid 90's, we were born then. and i'm not saying he should get his facts checked. and really it's time to drop this matter...and you can use the word ignorant instead ignoramus, you're not impressing anyone

yeah, you're totally right. but i also sympathise with the OP in that some people can be real dicks about genre classification in here. everyone knows what he meant - they just want to prove a point that they know more about emo than anyone else.

if you're talking about roots emo you inevitably talking about the eighties, and if you're not talking about roots emo don't get all uppity when people tell you that it's not emo.

yeah ok, fair enough. i just tend to think that the only good that comes out of genre classification is that i know which section to go to when i go to a record store. aside from that, it's not really worth arguing about.

Do you guys remember all the way back to ought two? We had passion. Real goddamn angst, broder. We had Tell All Your goddamn Friends. Then, we got Forever the Tell All Your Friends about The SickestpunattheendofthenameCyde. Tell All Your goddamn Friends was all "this is the last night/you'll be keeping secrets from me," but this Sickchester Orchestra was all "last night/was the last time/you keep your secrets."
White people dial the phone all "bloop bloop blop" and black people dial the phone like "bleep bleep blork."

Everyone quotes Arrested Development now, It's Always Sunny is super mainstream at this point, no one gets the Larry Sanders references or Curb, and Venture Brothers is just too...dork cred esoteric. What else is there?! I wear man shoes! Watch me skateboard!
