View Full Version : Best screaming vocals?

Screams are usually not very accessible but which vocalists do you think have made this more than accessible?
In my opinion Keith Buckley is the best screamer out there today but Spencer Chamberlain has more range and is more brutal in his lower-mid range screams.
The best high screams though are either Buckley's or Alex Varkatzas (just listen to the scream before the chorus in Creature or the scream in Becoming The Bull's bridge).
Overall Buckley is the best.

Not the best range but Cameron (ex- Arsonists Get All The Girls), IMO. But a lot of the time when he did his highs, it sounded like he was straining his voice.

THIS
I think Page from Helmet's got that raw yelling/screaming thing going on well. Especially when fit over the top of Helmet's music. It's great. Also, I'm a fan of the really raw kind of sounding screaming. Sounds weird, but the end of You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker is an example of what I'm talking about. Screaming to scream is one thing, but when it's used for emotional purposes (like the example I listed) I think they're fantastic.
Daniel Weyandt from Zao
Greg from Dillinger Escape Plan
Keith Buckley from ETID
Dallas from MATSOD
Josh Scogin from Norma Jean/The Chariot

Well, I listen to alot of screaming music, a whole bunch of bands, and I think Spencer Chamberlin's screams sound appealing to my ears and better than most of the other stuff I listen to. What a stupid thing to say. The sounds that come out of his mouth are a scream (are they not?) and to some (me) they sound great. I really don't see what else there is to it.
However, he's not my favorite. My favorite screamer is the dude from Parkway Drive, especially because of how good he is live, and how much clarity he has in his screams. Old all that remains (Phill Labonte) is also pretty nasty as is the screamer from Thrill Seeker by August burns red. Much better than the Jake from messangers and constellations.

My Favorites, as far as execution:

Mike - Prada
Jake - ABR
And seriously one of the best out there (and an incredible) lyricist - Eric from At the Throne of Judgment.

As someone who is a vocal screamer, and have been doing it for about 7 years now, I can tell you that talent wise, Spencer Chamberlin is not that good. It's not a knock on him, and I'm not saying what sounds better on the ears or not. I coule listen to Bradley Hathaway strum one chord for an entire song and the song will sound more appealing to my ears than maybe a Metallica song, but does that mean he's a better guitar player? We're speaking who's better, and Spencer Chamberlin is average at best. I would be willing to place money on it that if he wasn't in UnderOath you wouldn't be saying the same thing.

I think Francis from Warship(and formerly FATA) is one of my favorite screamers, you can tell that he puts alot into his vocal output which is awesome. For the most part bands these days seem to be stuck on this monotone barking, with a few exceptions.
So sidenote:
How is it possible to scream like any of these guys without killing your throat and vocal chords?
The vocalist from Whitechapel is pretty nuts.
My personal favorite is Keith Jones the ex oceana vocalist. And Cole Wallace who is ex vox for Gwen Stacy.

unsigned band but they're getting alot of attention because Jon Mess is featured in one of their songs but the screamer for that band has one of the best screams I've ever heard. The tone of it is extremely unique and almost trebley but at the same time it has so much punch. Your opinion. I think Bannon is horrible and can hardly be considered a screamer. He's a noise maker to me (and a few other people in this thread) as you can't understand a single word that comes out of his mouth. To me, a key component of screaming is having your words be clear, if they're not, in my opinion it's not done right. Then again, I don't like converge at all, I think the whole band is just a noisy incomprehensible mess.

You sir are the moron if you can't understand that to many people, part of a good 'scream' is that it should be understandable. A few of us have stated that fact which you ignored and called us morons as if we didn't understand the question. If you just hear RAR RAR RAR RAR RAR RAR that doesn't constitute good screaming to me, no matter how much raw talent it takes to produce that noise.
My criteria for best screamer:
1. Range
2. Clarity of words
3. Control of voice (no cracking unless it's obviously intentional)
4. Ability to have several tones of screaming (similar to range but I mean like being able to sing/scream as well as full out scream)

Probably didn't word it right but I mean like 'melodic screaming'. Similar to what the new norma jean guy has done on the past couple of cd's. It's not quite singing but it's not really screaming either. It's like a raspy mix. I guess it's an additional thing. If a vocalist does the other 3 on my list really well but can also pull off a bit of melody without it being singing I really like that.

Chris Preece's vocals are (sorry, were) nice with Vanna
I'm judging this off of Curses only

Bert Mckraken (the used) or however it's spelled. Can make you deaf if you see them live, but overall Dustin Fucking Kensrue.

Underneath the Gun... that guy had the best range I've ever heard. low growl, pig squealzzzz and a high scream. only on their first album though

As generic as their first album was, it was so much better than their newer one, especially the vocals like you said.

Mike Hranica, Chester Bennington, Winston McCall
Chester is easily the best vocalist in that list (which might not be the best of compliments).

You type like that, like the Used, and can consider yourself a Thrice fan? Well, maybe that love of Thrice will help you out someday.
Chasing Victory, Glassjaw, Norma Jean, and TSOAF.
I don't think I agree with any of these, lol, unless you're talking Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child Norma Jean.

My Favorite is Keith Buckley, but i also think Thomas Erak (the Fall Of Troy), Daryl Palumbo (Glassjaw), Francis Mark (From Autumn To Ashes, Warship), James Dewees (Reggie and the Full Effect) and Clifford Brien Worsham (Secret Lives of the Freemasons) are good as well.

george pettit
is amazing
I love Alexisonfire because f the way they blend Dallas' soulful voice with George's in your face vocals that are now more gravely along with Wade's aggressive voice. It's amazing how a band can blend a melodic voice with a hardcore voice so easily.

I'm gonna say Randy Blythe of Lamb of God. Just take a listen to Ruin off As the Palaces Burn. Dude can hold a scream pitch too. He is honestly the best I think. And 2nd would go to Phil Labonte of All That Remains, though Overcome is a weak as hell album. He's got the ability to really scream his fucking guts out.

I honestly really like Spencer Chamberlain, even if there are a few people in this thread who say he's just average. To me his screams are very emotionally charged. And I'm not a big fan of Chiodos or Craig Owens, but that dude does some ridiculous screams.

i saw them at warped tour this year for the first time, and i was blow away. they have so much charisma and love on stage. they all want to be there and they all love what they do so passionatley.
it was a great experience.
im dying to see city and colour
I love Dallas Green's voice and City and Color is pretty good. I think it would be cool to hear Dallas sing Alexisonfire songs acoustically. I watched a video of him singing Boiled Frogs an it was amazing.

You also used "your" instead of "you're" and "to" instead of "too." Your comment about Norma Jean technically wasn't grammatically unsound, but figured I'd fix that while I was at it, lol.
