I'm just getting started in my band and i'm singing and screaming. But I want my screams to be better and not hurt my throat at the end of every show. If i keep it to a whisper scream i'm usually ok but if i try and make it legit it fucks me up half the time. Any suggestions?

I'm in a similar band situation. I've been attempting to learn the right way to scream through instructional vids on Youtube. If it hurts your voice, you're not quite doing it right, and if you continue hurting your voice, you could develop callouses on your vocal chords.
GO EASY ON YOUR VOICE. It's your one only irreplaceable instrument.

Advice: don't do it.
There's no good way to scream, and often the way that is doing the least damage to your vocal chords sounds worse than more damaging methods.
It's like, you know when you do a really big shit, all your stomach muscles tense up, that's what you want you you scream. If it's coming from your throat and you're not feeling anything happen in your stomach, you're doing more harm than good. When you want to scream words it's going to sound quite different (obviously ;]) and it's hard to get words out because your mouth is open so wide, so practice talking stretching your mouth big as much as possible. Obviously, it takes practice and you're not going to get it perfect straight away, and remember everyone has a different scream :].
It will fuck your throat the first few days your practice, but after a while it shouldn't. Oh & sorry if you knew this already ;].

Have you ever thought about emailing bands on myspace that you enjoy who scream and asking their singer if he's got any tips. Most bands nowadays are all about talking to people and trying to make friends. Also, it's obviously not the best idea to be screaming, but if you've got to, do it right.

You're all very, very wrong.
You're screaming from your throat, and not from your diaphragm, you need to belt it from your stomach region. If you're not using your whole upper torso to do the scream, then you're doing it just from your throat and your going to ruin your vocal cords.

And screaming is better if you use more of your stomch than your throat. You have to tighten your abs up and belt it out. But if you value your singing don't do it. Just have a guitar player or bassist do the screams.

If it's hurting your throat though, even after a couple times... I wouldn't risk it anymore. If you really want to do it though, I'd definitely look into asking any guys (or girls) in bands that you know, even from myspace. They'll probably be glad to help. Scream from whatever place hurts the most, ull produce the most honest and emotional sound, youll also end up having throat surgery. but at least when your under the knife youll go in knowing that if you die during this procedure you've made something that your proud of and cant be duplicated by any amount of talent because that music contains your soul.
