I read a thread somewhere on this site the other day that posed the question, "Does anybody still care about John Nolan?" Unfortunately, in Tampa Bay at least, the answer seems to be no. Perhaps that's a little harsh, but I saw him play last night to about 20 people, so I think it's safe to say that not too many people care about his music down here anymore. The new stuff sounded pretty good, and it was good to hear a couple of old songs I knew. It was one of the better experiences I've had at a concert in a long time because I was able to see a man who has been a part of 3 albums (and several EPs) that I have absolutely loved, and I was able to chat with him in the parking lot and watch what seemed like a private concert to me. GET OUT THERE AND SUPPORT THIS GUY. It was a great time, and hopefully if/when he rolls through town again there will be a better showing. In the last month I have seen John Nolan, Ace Enders, and Kenny Vasoli play to under 100 people combined, and that depresses me because they are all deserve better than that.
Okay, now that my rant is over I can say that I definitely enjoyed O'Brother. I don't know any of their song names, but everything sounded good and they were really great guys. As for John Nolan, he was great as well. He played new songs off of his upcoming solo album, his collection of fan collaborations, a couple of Straylight Run songs, and a cover. His wife Camille joined him on stage for some of the songs (I don't remember which exactly, but it wasn't for the Straylight Run songs or the Elliot Smith song, so it was all or most of his new songs), and the bassist and drummer from O'Brother joined the two of them on stage for the final two songs (as John played electric guitar while Camille split time between the acoustic guitar and the keyboard). The following is what he played:
I Don't Believe You
Not to Let Go
This Is How
Waltz #2 (Elliot Smith)
Ten Ton Shoes
Keep Calm and Carry On
It's For the Best
Till It's Done to Death
Scream Into the Wind
