"This is only Reitman’s third film and he’s showing such a level of confidence here that it’s almost scary. Where does he go from here? UITA is going to be on everyone’s Ten-Best list, and Clooney will be nominated for Best Actor. Clooney has never been so good. In fact, I feel he was born to play this character, a charmingly aloof business-track smoothie called Ryan Bingham."

But, yea, I hope this is good. Jason Reitman is just an incredibly talented director that brings tons of personality to his films.

When you read the description of the character, it's like the role was written for him.
1- I despise Juno but solely for its pathetic hipster-vomit script. Its a good movie with a terrible script.
2- I love everything else about the movie and I especially love Jason Reitman. I also love George Clooney. I absolutely cannot wait for this movie.

I'm going to respectfully disagree on the Oscar thing. I have no opinion about Mo'Nique because I haven't seen "Precious," and Kendrick's acting was perfectly fine and nuanced. But I don't think anything about really screams Oscar material. She was good for the part but I think beyond that, nothing too spectacular.

So many scenes where Clooney's facial expression alone just made the scene gut-wrenching. Just saw this movie, loved it. For some reason i was expecting something a little more.... indie? I guess that's the best word i can come up with for the time being. But still extremely enjoyable, George Clooney gets better with every role it seems.

Clooney was really good and nailed the character, but I don't think it was an Oscar-winning performance. I felt like Kendrick stole every scene she was in, I really enjoyed watching her. Very good movie, it was paced well, and Reitman was definitely in total control of everything he wanted to purvey. The Hurt Locker was better, I felt, and remains the best American-made film I've seen so far this year.

Yeah, The Hurt Locker is the better film, and Inglourious Basterds is still my favorite film of the year, but this will likely be the third film in my top 3. A Serious Man could change that though, if I ever actually get to see it.

FINALLY saw this yesterday, really good. Clooney was fantastic as were all his one liners. The line about old women especially killed me because my theater was full of chatty old women.
Great movie, definitely love their soundtrack. The job they're doing and some of the scenes toward the end were quite depressing but overall I like the general message they're trying to send.

I feel like people use the word nuanced just because they've read other critics reviews of certain films so the word just gets thrown around.
To me, her performance wasn't "nuanced" at all. Instead that is the precise reason why I feel she deserves the award above Mo'Nique. I don't agree with TJ though because I feel that regardless of what you do for a film to promote it and what-have-you, the performance itself is what's nominated.
Anna Kendrick's turn here is pretty damn brilliant. Having seen both films, if it came down to the these two performances, both wonderful, I would go with Kendrick. Mo'Nique was a tad over-dramatic for me. Kendrick was subtle, effective, astute, and above all else, she played her character with charisma that you rarely see in an actress so young.

He definitely follows Natalie's advice and just picks somewhere on the map to fly to. Whether he finds what he's looking for or not there is hard to say.
Wouldn't mind Anna Kendrick winning best supporting actress (still haven't seen Precious), but I don't think she "stole the show" as some of you appear to. My thoughts exactly. However, some people want to root for the underdog. Basically, I can root for the Chicago Cubs to win the world series but it hasn't happened in over 100 years and more than likely the Yankees are gonna win again. So I see why someone would want to root for the underdog. I just think that even though An Education wasn't as popular, Gabourey's performance was an inch or two better.

While I don't agree in using the term as reason not to see a film, I take issue with your analogy; here's why.
The way I see it, the "entertainment" aspect of sports is almost incidental when it comes to the way athletes view the game. Of course for the networks, the owners and the league itself, entertainment is numero uno. But I don't think Kobe Bryant goes out and says, I wanna entertain this crowd, that's my number one goal. Like you said, his goal is to win championships. Now, the point is, we don't care. We know that entertaining us isn't Kobe's number one goal, but it doesn't matter. His goal of winning that championship actually has a positive correlation with entertainment value. The harder he tries to win that championship the better he plays, the better he plays, the more entertaining he is.
On the other hand, a filmmaker's number one goal should be to entertain us, not to get his movie an award. The problem is, when a filmmaker makes a movie just to win an award (Oscar bait) there isn't always a positive correlation with the entertainment value, in fact, sometimes it is a negative correlation, especially when we're talking about filmmakers putting out the same types of films year after year because they are the ones the awards committee usually votes for.
Hope that makes sense.

A lot of films though are given the Oscar Bait title based on the script. Then after the script has a ton of hype, sometimes you'll see "oscar bait" type actors jump aboard and really the Director has no choice but to be making an Oscar Bait film. Sometimes the title is given to a movie that was never intended to be such a thing. that to me is when a film suffers. When there's no sense of focus or guidance and you can see on the screen that the director wants one thing and the producers want another. Those, to me are the worst.

I can agree with that.

they called it Up In The Air cause people have a hard-on for the lovely acting of one George Clooney, I would say give him a hand, but he's so famous he probably doesnt even have to ask for one

I think my main problem with this movie was Danny McBride. I would have liked anyone else in that role over him.
Hmm, thought he was perfect for it.

Definitely one of my favorite movies of the last year, and I know quite a few other people in the music industry who spend alot of time on the road really dug the message and Clooney's character. Reitman is gold, great director and will only get better I think.

I really don't like Danny McBride at all, but I thought he did well with his limited role in this film.
I'm really bummed that this film isn't getting looked at as much for Best Director or Best Picture as Avatar is. My top 3 films of last year would be some combo of The Hurt Locker, District 9, and this.

Just saw this today, absolutely wonderful. I still have a lot to see, but right now this is my favorite film from 2009. Probably my favorite performance from Clooney, he was perfect for this character. I thought Kendrick was very good in her role, but not quite Oscar-worthy.

Watched this again a week and a half ago. Just as good the second time, and I think I appreciated the ending more. That wedding scene is so damn good.
i need to watch this again, it was great the first time but it definitely feels like a movie you need a second viewing of to really appreciate.

Just got back from seeing this.. an incredibly well done movie. Great script, cinematography is very fitting and moves the film along perfectly, and in my opinion the movie couldn't have been casted any better. Easily one of George Clooney's best films, if not his best
