Kevin Devine and Conor Oberst parallel each other a lot, I've always thought. Both started out and continue to do a lot of acoustic, solo material, both have progressed and reached into full band territory, both are praised for their songwriting, etc. So, with that being said, who do you like/think is better?

For me, it used to be Bright Eyes, now I'd probably go with KD.

KD aspires to be what BE has always been.

BE gets my vote.

Bright Eyes, Conor writes better lyrics...

though Kevin is pretty talented himself, just not as great as Conor.

I enjoy Kevin Devine so much more than Bright Eyes. The voice, the lyrics and the music.

I would pick bright eyes.
Kevin Devine, while quite a great guy and accomplished writer, seems to be plagued by the same problems throughout all of his work. Above anything else, he has a tendency to overwrite. Listen to "A Burning City Smoking." That song is so hooky and catchy. But it just keeps going and going and going. The lyrics are great but the song loses its immediacy with each passing wordy-as-hell verse. Sort of like Bob Dylan's "Hurricane." Of course, Conor can do the same thing. While I love "landlocked blues," the song just keeps going and going. When it is just acoustic and voice, songs need to have a certain degree of conciseness to them -- otherwise, without a complex melody, they just get boring. Luckily, the full band evolution of both dudes has pretty much solved this problem (at least when it comes to string albums together better)

KD doesn't write music, he gives us tickets to a train the voyages through his mind.

KD all the way.
