...is the Primer of books.
Total, complete confusion. And amazing.
Read it now.
I've been reading it forever but never really feel like reading anymore so I kinda stopped at like page 80. Maybe I'll read some tonight.

You really should. You're nowhere near the best parts.

Agreed. Awesome awesome book. One of my favorites. The thing about reading books like these is no book will follow it up. I usually just end up reading nothing for awhile. Luckily, Coin Locker Babies was a worthy follow up.

Heh, thanks for the rec. I'll add it to my huge stack of books I want to read. Next is Crash.

Hmmm, I definitely have to read it then. I haven't read a good book for awhile.

The best part of this book was Johnny Truant's footnotes.

P.S. Is the Fall of Troy song title "You got a death wish, Johnny Truant" in reference to this?

It's pretty safe to say so, as well as the song "The Hol[ ]y Tape"

Bingo. TFOT are fans of the book, as well as Anthony Green.

I got pissy when reading the excess of footnotes (bloody hell, annotation should note yield another fucking story). I will attempt to read it again, but this time I will read straight through, and then i'll read it and pay attention to his meanderings.

i'm not familiar with this book? Who wrote it and what exactly is it about? It sounds very enticing to say the least.

im up to page 180 or so...the whole thing with jed and wax and the small room...amazing, im still shivering from reading it.
though i often wonder. i know the book is a dual narrative, but what's with all the white space? mood setting is great, but sometimes...i dunno, i just dont get it right now.
try to picture that in your dreams

So when a character is running, you have to turn the pages faster.
The layout reflects the story.

Indeed. And it only gets better.
This is the kind of book that would make an awesome movie, but there's no way you could do it.
And supposedly, there are secrets hidden all over the book.

Mark Danielewski. This sucker is the epitome of Post-Modern Literature. I would not recommend this one for anyone with a lack of patience. It does pay off though. It is insane.

Agreed. Does anyone know of any books REMOTELY close to this style?
I ordered "The Whalestoe Letters" by the same author, there's a book you can only get in Holland, and he's got a new one coming out this year.

you COULD make a film of The Navidson Records- they give you enough material for it
as for johnny's descent into madness...

Maybe, but fans of the book would love it so much more.
What they could do is this:
Make "The Five And A Half Minute Hallway."
Make The Navidson Record. Use music by Poe (Danielewski's sister - she wrote an album based on HOL.)
Make a short movie about Zampano researching TNR.
Then, maybe make a movie about Johnny going insane over TNR and the Zampano movie. A good writer could pull it off, someone like Charlie Kaufman, and a good director (Darren Aronofsky would rock.)
But it still might not work...

ah...so THAT'S why the book keeps pimpin Poe...i was wondering why. is the album any good? dunno if i should but it nor not.
that would be a wonderful idea, but too complicated. they COULD do the whole teaser/trailer thing from chapter 1 of they wanted to tho. i would give anything to see Exploration #4
actually, itd be even cooler if some film students did it. give it more creedence, not to mention justice.

Did you ever look at the colleges in the back of the book in detail? They're crazy.
And the forum (houseofleaves.com) is INTENSE.

Don't know who your source is on that. MD said there's no way it will be made into a movie.
Any interest in seeing House of Leaves made into a movie?
As Will Navidson says of the house on Ash Tree Lane: Not For Sale. Too many books these days are written with film rights in mind, which I believe limits the vast potential of the written word. I mean any author who has done any amount of reading and writing should know films are a different medium. They're a completely different language. If you're thinking the Hollywood deal while you write, you're already selling out all the possibilities you have right there on the page. I love films but House of Leaves is not about that experience. If you want to see this movie, you'll have to read the book.

I can't see it working, it's too scatterbrained so it only works in the written form with the footnotes and referencing previous pages and such. Not that that is a bad thing, i just don't see a movie in this.

I wouldn't say its creepy. Its just....awesome.
As for the person who said something about follow-up books, I started reading 2666 right after and I think the branching story lines of HoL helped me pay attention more to the multiple stories of 2666. Though other than that, the two books have nothing in common.

Greatest book I've read to date,
if only it were more well-known.
I love having the full color edition,
with all the notes.
I would recommend it to anyone with patience.
