perhaps he was saying it for them. I'm not up-to-date with american kids' dialogue, but perhaps gross might mean 'sick' as in 'whack' as in 'good'.

Argh, I feel old all of a sudden.

Most kids here don't like em. I like them alot. There are better bands, but I like em.
