View Full Version : How do you drive a standard/manual/stick shift/whatever?

My mom and sister took my car to Florida and my dad leaves in about an hour for work.. So I'm planning on being a reckless teen and taking my sister's car.
While this is a little illegal (not illegal enough to stop me from doing it) I have no clue how to drive this car.
I just need to know enough to get me from point A to point B.
So any tips on how to drive a standard?

Please note** I only need to know this for if my friend falls through. She's trying to get her mom to let her stay at my house but her mom is all "ehh, no parents???" With good reason, too, I guess.

maybe it's a sign you shouldn't drive the car.

SteffRyanFail

I know I shouldn't. But I really want to.
I know, I know. Bad reasoning.

its not that hard. you just need to to push the clutch all the way in when you change gears. also, if you've never driven it before i would suggest not to listen to any music. this way you can listen to the engine. you should be able to feel when you need to change gears but hearing the engine will help aswell

Thanks. I'm not sure how my friend will feel about not listening to music, but I realllllly do not want to fuck up my sister's car.

Though, it's kind of a piece of crap already so even if I did she probably wouldn't notice.

well, when i was learning i found it helped being able to hear the engine aswell as feeling it. to be honest, the hardest part is getting going. once your moving, its fairly straight forward. also, make sure you take your foot off the accelerator while changing gears and dont park on a hill. hill starts are a bitch

i wouldn't recommend it. the concept is simple, but when you try to do it you will be failing miserably for the first little bit. you can't really explain it in text either. it pretty much requires a visual demonstration.

this. if you've never driven a stick, i doubt you'll be successful on your first try. took me about a week to really get the hang of it.

Do not take your sisters car period, second of all especially don't steal your sisters car if you can't drive stick because you WILL mess it up worse than it is.

this

learning by yourself would take so long
it took me like 3 weeks to get it down so I could drive normally
again, I'm prolly slow, but still, not an easy thing to do by yourself

I typed a long response to you but my computer fucked up and deleted it and I don't feel like typing it out again.
But in short:
Yeah, you're right.
And I had a long thing about how even though I'm stealing it, I'm not, but if I tried to sum that up it probably wouldn't make sense.

But, you get it down eventually and its pretty much second nature.
It's NOT something you'll master in one night. And its kinda hard to explain. Easier just to do.

If you don' know how to drive a manual I would really recommend you learn, It's a totally different experience from an automatic and you'll love every second of it. Leave automatic to the old people. :-)

But since I don't know you, my advice is to steal the car and post your fail here later.

Everyone should learn how do drive stick. I've been utilizing the good ole' manual transmission for over three years now, and, with each passing day, it's even more impossible for me to go back to the boring automatic that does all the fun stuff for you. I discourage you from stealing the car, but, when your sister returns, ask her to teach you how to drive the car. It'll take a week or two to get used to everything, but, from there (like someone just said on here), it becomes second-nature. In most cases, it's also better fuel economy as well as better acceleration when you get it down well enough. When I'm not driving aggressively, I'm often coasting in neutral or double-clutching my way into the highest gear if I could just chill and not worry about accelerating quickly. If I throw my car into fifth gear at 15-20 MPH, I'm not speeding off anywhere anytime soon... hahahahaha.

This and this. One night of fun definitely isn't worth the shitload of trouble (legal and otherwise) that you could get into if something bad happened.

in order to drive a manual you need to butter the clutch. Get salted butter and rub down the clutch pedal. Once you've done that you need to soften the transmission. Do this by massaging the steering wheel. Once you've done that you'll need to litter the floor of the car with paper clips. Best way to keep a stick in working order. Those are just some tips for the road!

I learned when I was about 10. I guess since I've grown up around equipment that use clutches (i.e. dirt bikes, quads) it came pretty natural to me. After a few weeks, you won't have any problem.

Drop the clutch and put the pedal to the floor, but be sure the emergency brake is off

Ease the clutch in and into first gear, slowly release the clutch while slowly pushing on the gas, at about even intervals of pressure. I change gears in my truck around 2500-300 RPMs every time I shift, thats a good number. So when you hit about 2500 RPM you should start hearing the engine getting higher, thats when you know to switch gears, release the gas pedal, push the clutch in and drop it down into second, repeat for every gear. Leave it in Neutral at stop lights. Start all over. Good luck.

Most likely, you're not going to be able to do it without someone who knows how to be there to teach you atleast a little bit. I however did this with major luck. I lied about being able to drive a stick to get a job at a lumber yard when I was 17. My friend was supposed to teach me the weekend before I started in his truck, but his truck ended up breaking down so we couldn't. So I searched the internet like crazy and pseudo figured it out. It stalled like 6 times when I actually was at work but luckily no one was watching. It's kinda like riding a bike though. You keep trying and trying and finally the balance just hits you and you're good to go. It was kinda like that. Sucked when I couldn't figure out reverse at all. Luckily I was on a hill when I needed it and it could just roll backwards.

avoid busy intersections.
practise not stalling.
force the clutch, not the gears.
