What's it about? Is it going to make me want to stuff my face with oreos while lying in bed?
My younger brother and sister both adore this book. My brother even HATES reading and he read this fast.
I'm guessing I should read it then?
Epic bump. read Hunger Games and Catching Fire this week. Good stuff, definitely.

Another bump. (hopefully it'll receive more posts)
But I just got done reading the second book (Catching Fire) and absolutely loved it. I can NOT wait for the third. It has me more excited than any Harry Potter books have.
Anyone have any good ideas to play some main characters for the film?
I would like to see more unknown actors play Katniss, Prim, Gale, and Peeta. But more established actors for the adults.

It was amazing. I was so surprised with how much I loved this book. I wasn't huge on the first book but I figured I should at least try and finish the series since I already started and actually liked the characters. Once I started I just could not put it down. I'm still shocked I finished that thing in about 12 hours. Really looking forward to the final book now

Finished the book the day after it came out. AWESOME!
It's a great younger read. Better than most of the shit kids are reading today. My sister, who is going to school for elementary english, recommended me this book, saying that it truly gets to the core of good reading for the teen. I just finished book one and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Kind of like a safer Battle Royale.

Came in to play devil's advocate but you kinda did it for me. NOW while i did enjoy the book it was almost exactly like battleroyale just tamer like mentioned in above quote. I was kind of dissapointed when things from the book were pinpoint like Battle Royale like the Body Armor part... ARE YOU KIDDING ME! as if someone wasn't going to catch on.

May as well bump this for the casting news. Jennifer Lawrence wouldn't have been my first choice, mainly because she looks nothing like Katniss was described, but they can obviously get her pretty close, and she definitely has the acting chops. Should be a great movie.

That's a great shout. My sister suggested Robert Downey Jr, she doesn't think John C Reilly is good looking enough to play Haymitch, who apparently is described that way.
I'm warming to this one. As long as he can convey Haymitch's cynical intelligence, I'm sold. Most people assosciate him with playing dumb characters, like in Step Brothers, which makes it tricky. I think it helps he's a little overweight, too, helps convey the 'former champion gone to seed' image.

I've only seen John C. Reilly play a serious role once, and that was in Chicago. It was almost weird because he's such a goofball. I don't really know if I could see him as Haymitch. I think Robert Downey Jr. would actually work though- he has that cynical sense of humor.

Yeah, I think Downey Jr would be good, too. I feel like someone else could do it better, I just can't think of them. Haven't seen Chicago, but Reilly has a serious role in Gangs of New York. It's not a big one, but he does it well. I think he's got something going for him :)

I really really hope these movies live up to the books! I have a whole image in my head about scenery and stuff, wonder how it will all play out.
I like John Hutcherson as Peeta, he fits in my mental image, not really excited about Liam though.

I finished reading the first book a few weeks ago. I was upset with how it ended, and in several parts was frustrated that the author didn't make the statements that I felt could be made to push it into true allegorical literature.
So I made the decision that I didn't want to read the other two books and instead looked up their plots online, haha. Kinda glad I didn't read them tbh.

I thought it was it was realistic. They won the war but it crushed the lives of so many people it's not something that any of them are truly ever going to come back from. The best they could do was try and move on and hopefully the world would be better for future generations. The 2 page epilogue was kind of weak though.
I could've sworn there was another thread for this too.

Yup, that's almost exactly what I expect to happen. The director (who I actually like quite a bit) said something to the effect that he knew there were a lot of kids under seventeen who are big fans of the book, and he wanted them to be able to see the movie.
That. Is. Bullshit. They want to sell tickets. They know perfectly well that anyone who wants to see this bad enough (were it rated R, like it should be) will find a way to.
If the movies actually take off and are a hit, I'll be very interested to see how they make Mockingjay PG-13.

It is rather amusing that violence in young adult literature is accepted but the movie has to be toned down. My only concern still (I either mentioned it in this thread or the other one) is that the studio is playing up the love triangle aspect way more than it was presented in the first book.

So how similar is this to Battle Royale? Less fucked up I presume?
The Battle Royale comparisons are starting to irritate me.. Once you get past the 'kids killing kids' aspect, THG and BR are very different.
In BR, the kids are all 9th graders who are drugged and forced by the military to kill each other. In THG, the individual tribute selection is at random and none of the tributes know each other (at first) and the government has them undergo intense before training for the games. The games are somewhat for entertainment purposes, and every citizen in the country is forced to watch the live broadcast, unlike BR. There's really a lot of things different, but I'd just suggest reading the book or watching the movie when it comes out and decide for yourself. I saw BR before I read THG and I still found them to be two drastically different books.
Also, the movie will be less fucked up so they can maintain a PG-13 rating, but the book did not strike me as much less violent than BR. Characters die in horrible ways and the brutality of the gamemakers/government is very similar to the brutality found from that in BR.
