Used to love them. Amputechture, De-Loused in the Comatorium, and Frances the Mute were all ace albums. Didn't really like Bedlam that much and haven't felt like listening to the new one..
Anything after Deloused is a complete waste of time for anyone who isn't high when listening.

I kinda like Frances, but I agree that Bedlam isn't that good, I don't have Octahedron, so I can't say on that one.
But I agree that after Deloused In The Comatorium they went on a downfall. Amputecture was awesome enough to keep them one of my fave bands.

To me, part of any talent is channeling it and knowing when to take it up and down a notch. Omar is an amazingly talented guitarist, but his talent is severely hindered by his inability to focus his efforts.

I have seen no problem with anything but their last two albums. Bedlam was good but too same sounding at times, and the last one just fucking sucked. The other ones are great, just different and not necessarily for everyone. I can see why someone would hate Amputechture or Francis the Mute, i just don't have the same problems.

Their early work was best. Bedlam was jsut a little too boring. But Octahedron is wayyy too generic for a band like TMV. It will be their most hated/liked album however because it appeals to more people.

I see what they were trying to do as a band. After four albums as spastic eccentricies that made some damn good prog rock, there's probably a sense of "hey, we need to do something different" in the band. However, I wish that the band had pushed more boundaries musically and vocally on that album. It's just basically fifty minutes of mellow music. While there are some catchy moments, I like TMV for their bilingual lyrics and their spastic eccentricities (bongo breakdown FTW). The genre-bending left that album for "acoustic" rock.
Deloused > Bedlam > Frances the Mute >>> Amputechture >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Octahedron
Bedlam is SECOND? Are you on something? That was a real emotional disconnect for me, and well, it sounded similar to TFoT's new album, but better vocally and musically.

That album sucks. They could have done all sorts of things instead of regular mars volta but instead they just got rid of everything that made them good.

True. I don't think it's good necessarily, but it's basically on the same level as Bedlam for me.

Even so, I still didn't like it. I gave a chance and it didn't click and the world moved on anyway.

Basically what I'm saying, but I have respect for the band so I'll be an angel and say it nicely.

I'm a big fan. Picking up Frances the Mute after hearing the radio-edit of The Widow in the fall of 2005 was one of the first albums that inspired me to branch away from scene fare. I'm currently crafting a Top 100 Favorite Albums of the Decade list for my campus paper (and eventually Sun on the Sand) and De-Loused has etched a place in my top twenty. I am actually quite fond of Amputechture and it's my second favorite effort of theirs (right behind De-Loused). Though the lyrics are as cryptic as any of their efforts, the religious commentary (though not subtle) is really engaging and Meccamputechture is my favorite Volta cut. Frances the Mute while compositionally arresting, is a must-hear for the overarching story alone (and the attempts at trying to piece together the narrative).
I've not listened to Bedlam yet, but Octahedron is mildly enjoyable and kinda poppy (in a good way).

if you enjoy Deloused you'll probably like the Bedlam in Goliath

I like that they tried a more chilled out sound with Octahedron, I'm a minority?

I really like the whole discography, so I doubt I wouldn't dig Bedlam. I just never got around to picking it up last year, put I'll rectify this soon.

I thought Octahedron was horrible. Biggest letdown of the year for me.

So you fully admit to enjoying Octahedron?
it was forgettable, but i didn't hate it like everyone else seems to and it doesn't take away from the fact that they're still one of the best collective groups of musicians currently making music today.
dude, the last two albums weren't good.
irrelevant (even though i enjoyed Bedlam In Goliath quite a bit--it didn't do what Frances The Mute did for me, but i still had fun with it). they're still a ridiculously talented band who are skilled songwriters in their own right; no lack of appreciation of their most recent work can ever take away the fact that they're better than just about everyone else at what they do, imo.

That's what several people said to me, but I only liked Goliath and two other tracks on that album.

Bedlam is somewhat similar to TFoT in my opinion, and it's really unfortunate, actually. Goliath is solid however.

Definitely.

I really liked the first three albums too, however these last two haven't done it for me.

This. We feel your pain.

It kind of does actually, while they may be talented as a group, the band has definitely suffered. I'm left wondering if those last two albums were flukes or if they've lost it.
