I know a lot of people who automatically think that any white rapper apart from Eminem sucks, and they usually get tagged as being someone who is "trying to be black." I'm open to any white rappers, but sadly I know a lot of people who aren't. I think a lot of them could be persuaded if they like what they here though, and maybe even a little impressed that it's coming from a white rapper?

Then again, I have a very limited knowledge of the genre, so I don't really have much more input to give.

Being that the hip hop/rap genre has been predominantly black (and correct me if I'm wrong) I would say that people come to accept it shitty or not, same as for, say...pop punk being predominantly white, if you will (and people accepting it shitty or not). In that sense, people will understand if he/she is talented or not and I would say that beats out any kind of fame, depending on what he/she wants. Credit will be given to where credit is due and it will be accepted if worthy.

If you're talking about how it will be received in pop culture sense, then it's really hit or miss. For example, Asher Roth wrote a song about how he loves college. Would you say that is talented? I personally would not. Singing about keggers, beer pong, loving college, isn't what I would consider talent, though it could be argued otherwise (but really?). If the person writes about something that people feel catchy (in Asher's case), vulger (in Eminem's case at times), etc then there shouldn't be any problem being accepted. I'm too tired to go on with this rant, but essentially I really don't care if they are white or not. It's a matter of talent and the context of the music for me. The only white rapper/hip hop artist(s) I can think of are the Beastie Boys. I don't mind the music they create.

I totally get what you're saying. I mean like, say what you want for Eminem's skill level, but if he wasn't as vulgar and as outrageous as he is, he wouldn't have made it as a rapper, not because he isn't skilled, but because he isn't black.

Exactly. I mean there is definitely a stereotype that white people can't rap. And it is based on those who have tried in a mocking manner or are absolute shit (Vanilla Ice might be a good example of that. But we get it, you like him because it's funny to do so, not because he's talented). I'm sure if I were to go on to a myspace page, it being for a hip hop/rap artist, and seeing a white kid in the pictures, I would probably 'x' out of the page or listen to it already with a judgment that it probably blows. And I use "hip hop/rap" only because I have yet to figure out the difference between the two.

Every white rapper seems to be compared to Eminem (in most circumstances)

Just like every female fronted band seems to be compared to Paramore (in most circumstances)

Neither white rappers or female vocalists (in a band) can get over this hurdle of the comparisons, yet.

Just a thought, though I definitely hope that changes soon.

i think people are open to a white rapper as long as he doesnt try to be something hes not. asher roth recently got pretty popular by rapping about pretty "white" subjects. i think any white rapper that gains success though is doomed to be compared to eminem all the time though. if hes rly good theres no reason that he wouldnt have a chance to make it big.

Being a white rapper: Is there a stigma?

</oldjoke>

My favorite rappers are white, mainly because I can identify better with them. They are Eminem and Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park, Fort Minor). Then again, I am a very white person, and hip-hop is by no means my favorite genre. I like conscious rap the best (Lupe Fiasco, Atmosphere), and I feel that many black hip-hop artists in the mainstream don't make that kind of music. Because white people don't rap about the 'hood or about booty (too much), they are less in the mainstream, but I prefer them because they rap about more interesting things (politics, social commentary). These statements are, of course, broad generalizations, and there are exceptions to everything I say.

It depends on what they rap about.

Eminem is great because he takes his experiences and bundles them up in his raps. He raps about real things, unlike much of the mainstream rap out there. Those are just about "cars, pimps, booty, money., etc.."

But if he's a good enough rapper, it really isn't going to matter - with that said, he will likely never be as big as a black rapper of similar skill would be. IF he's fine with that, go ahead.

If you guys are really interested in hearing awesome, legit white rappers check out Hilltop Hoods. They are Australia's top selling hip-hop act and they really have a Jurassic 5 kind of vibe. Their albums all go gold in Australia but they're essentially unknown in the US.

I'd recommend the singles Nosebleed Section or The Hard Road.

As a hip hop fan, I don't give a shit about what race they are. But I would add that a lot of white artists in the genre don't have the convenience of getting to be subpar lyricists in the scene, because of the obvious bias against them. People can feel sincerity, though, so if your friend is authentic, then people will respond.

Just tell him not to use beats made in fruity loops.

Most white rappers are pretty bad (case in point: most of the rappers mentioned in this thread), but I don't really have a prejudice against them. If someone told me so and so rapper was good I wouldn't immediately write them off if I found out they were white or something. I like the Beastie Boys and shit.

The idea that white rappers are more "relatable" because they're generally white males from the suburbs is not only one of the worst, but also one of the most over-used, arguments on the planet, though. Drives me nuts when people say stupid shit like that.
