View Full Version : Recommend me recent music(last 2 years)
I haven't listened to more than 75 or 100 releases since the latter half of 2007, and very little from 2008 or 2009. Makes me feel kind of bad, but it's been too long for me to catch up easily on my own. Some people may remember me and what my music taste were, but they've gotten a bit more diverse. I like screamo (but there's not really any good bands left) and really intense music in general, but despise all metal and enjoy somewhat laidback rap/leftfield hip-hop. Free Jazz is another peronal favorite. You can check my profile, it's fairly accurate. Most of what I listen to within rock is either derived from hardcore or has heavy roots in posthardcore, even if they sound nothing like it.
Anyways, here is a list of more recent things I enjoy:
Why?
Titus Andronicus
Clipse
Past Lives
Champagne Champagne
Gumbi
Mars Volta - the caveat here is that Amputechture is my favorite and that I enjoyed both goliath and octahedron.
Alias
Sole and the skyriders band
Bill Dixon
Elliot (Louisville)
Thing I hate :
Generic pop/punk.
Almost all pop/punk, because it's almost all generic.

Nick Cave + Bad Seeds are not a folk band though, and you most definitely need to check out Dig Lazarus Dig!!! Amazing album. Then check out their back catalogue.

Yeah sorry, I don't know too much about hardcore. Have you heard Tail Swallower and Dove by These Arms Are Snakes?I'm assuming you would have.

I don't actually like modern true hardcore haha, probably should've put that. At least, I dislike the sxe stuff and find that most true hardcore missed the point and stopped innovating.
Those are posthardcore though, and I should listen to taas more.
I start school in another week but haven nothing better do so should be able to dig this stuff out and listen to all of it. I've never liked Nick Cave before, but i'll give it a try.

Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear are worth catching onto.
Florence and the Machine - Lungs is a great album, incorporates some soul, r'n'b and pop into her fantastic voice.
Jeffrey Lewis and the Junkyard - 'Ere Am I is a good indie-folk album in a similar vein to Kimya Dawson, though you said you weren't much into folk.

Mass Movement of the Moth (awesome posthardcore band that broke up in 07)
The Catalyst (Hardcore mixed with some psychadelic riffs)

Thanks - I already listen to mmotm. Definitely will check out the first ones. Racebannon's acid and blood was the last album i listened to in this genre. Killie + Envy are the only decent screamo bands still active.
I really like the nick cave album, and the taas one as well. Downloaded the rest in a batch and will listen to them later today.
DEP isn't my style because they have too much metal influence for me.

Alright awesome hope you like them. I really do think you might like the Catalyst though. They have a kind of noisy thing going on that I think you'd enjoy... they really aren't run of the mill hardcore.

Defeater - Travels one of the best hardcore bands I've ever come across. Travels is a concept album with an amazing storyline. I read the lyrics to it like a book sometimes
Most of the recs in this thread have been really good. Caspian I liked, but only as background music for playing starcraft, which it was great for.
Times new vikings was good, on japandroids right now.
My friend was telling me about lords one day but i could never find any of their material so I kind of ignored them after that. Same with coliseum.

That's pretty much what I'm doing. There's far too much music released on smaller labels to be easily listened to, thus this. In addition, I know the music tastes of something like 1/4 of the music forum regulars and if they coincide with mine. If I don't like something, I don't like something - I didn't like the enablers at all.

mht's jams o' fun list includes (but not limited to)

-download their free EP, the song Saving Grace on their myspace is the most headbangable/jump around your bedroom in your underwear jam in the last two years. RIYL: Alice In Chains, Only Living Witness, Quicksand, the 90s. Ex members of awesome bands.
http://www.myspace.com/robotsandempire
-heavy guitars with some of the best pipes in music today. dude can falsetto with the best of them. vocal to guitar harmonies are nice on a summer time drive, picking up on the creative breakdowns that aren't just open, open, double bass is also something cool in music today. RIYL: Cave In (if they were good), Into Another, Failure, the 90s (again)
http://www.myspace.com/sixfeetunderrecords2
-find the band on that playlist called Gypsy. Best band coming out of PA right now, bringing back that 90s emo rock bullshit that everyone dick rides on here. The song is awesome, the band is awesome. find their 7'' and listen to the whole thing. Gotta love the 90s. Has members of tons of hyped PA bands, makes sense. But 90s revival rules.

I am not sure if you have ever listened to these guys because they have a ton of releases under their belt but, if you havent, and you love post hardcore and the 90s (see the theme yet) you should. Now a lot of people write them off because of the vocal style, and I say, if you are true fan of post hardcore style music then most of the bands have horrendous vocal styles anyway, because, that is the fucking point. I can only listen to this band under heavy drug/alcohol binges, but when I do and I'm not thinking straight. Don't let them being on Deathwish or them having a split release with a crappy band like Shook Ones fool you. It took me awhile to get into these guys, because I used to hate them, I actually can't really listen to them sober. but there is much worse out there. (RIYL: bad vocals, the 90s)

this is good shit. where can I get the demo though? I like Human Engine and want more
demo is a cassette and it's hard to find, I think in total they only ever recorded 6 songs (4 song clean produced EP) and the 2 (DIY/RAW) songs of the cassete for when they played SXSW. which was in the bathroom you see here:

guitar player headbanging his life away on the left. so heavy for a bathroom show.
