Mouthful of Bees - Mouthful of Bees
Record Label: Afternoon Records
Release Date: May 5, 2009

When the family duo of Chris and Katelyn Farsted began their adventure into the already crowded Minneapolis music scene, they had no idea of the people they'd befriend or the music they would create together. After the addition of new acquaintances and a longtime friend, Mouthful of Bees was fully actualized. Their self-titled release begins to show the significance of their prowess and an ability to expand on their early experimentation.

The warm tone "Del Boca Vista" fades in with a casual jazz vernacular. It rambles for a moment, then fades like the twilight only to be awoken by the rhythmic strums that introduce "Micky's Bed", a moody vamp that is diffused by an esoteric dialect describing the collegiate lifestyle of (presumably) band member Micky Alfano. Antics of a similar nature carry throughout the album in bits and pieces, but the overall theme of the first few tracks is of subtle instrumentation, precise drumming, and ambient harmonies. Although this style of indie music has been around for some time, Mouthful of Bees breathes new life in a familiar sound. Songs like "Enhance Your Starry Night", "Please and Thank You", and "Thomas Aquinas" are made beautiful by the ethereal guitar and piano instrumentation set delicate tempos.

The latter half of the album better represents Mouthful of Bees' earlier stages of development. Beginning with the instrumental "John Blackthorne", the album begins to envelop a cerebral rock mentality. "Round Dance" and "Appling" are laced with energy relative to rest of the album. Even when showing their more playful side on "The Magic of Numbers", the band maintains a musical integrity that gives hope for a bright future, should their stay at college not cause collapse.
