I have to pay for about half of my college education through student loans. I was wondering what everyones opinion is on them, how they are doing it/did it, and what is the best way to go about it.

thanks

The best thing to do is fill out a FAFSA and accept any pell grants given to you. In NY state we also get a TAP grant for those in need. Since I'm no longer in need acc. to the gov't, I have to start depending on some loans. But to help decrease my dependancy on that I've signed up for tons of scholarships and hopefully I'll get some. I already have a full tuition scholarship to my school, but since it's a state school...room and board cost more than tuition. Uhm, if you're a science student try and do research...some times u can get grants (this is hard and rare) and u can put that money into costs. You can also see if your school has a work study program...pretty much they give you BS jobs (at like a library, computer center, gym) where you sit around and do close to nothing but get paid...you can either take the money or have it go directly towards paying some of ur bills. Hope it works out for u.

My family got very very little from FAFSA. The thing is I want to go to a pretty expesnsive private school (about $38,000-40,000 a year) and the scholarship money wasnt as much as I thought I might get. I applied for some scholarships but the most I might be able to get is $5,000.

You can also thank your federal government for cutting scholarship funding, which leaves the average student with $6,000 more debt from loans now.

The funniest thing in the world was looking through a bunch of scholarships at my school and seeing the third one from a list of about 100 being "I'm A Different Color".

So that's why my family, who barely makes $100,000 COMBINED only got $2600 after I filled out the FAFSA?

Thx GDubs!

hah that's the same as my family...

i took a class my senior year that helped minority kids get into college [i'm white, and i was already accepted into a school] so it was pretty much a joke...but the teacher told me that if your parents make over 100k you'll get the smallest loan, and the rest you have to pay for yourself

and the thing was....that class pisssed me off so bad because everyone and their mother was getting a free ride to college...and all of them were like, "you're white, you're rich, you can afford it"

haha yeah...it was a good time

i didn't have to do anything, and i was really close with the teacher, so once my financial aid was straight, i just chilled with her

i just had to ignore the retarded kids in there

That 100k "cutoff" was in existence before W. It was actually laws passed under the Clinton administration that effected that. And in any event, if your parents are making 100k, you arent hurting. The ridiculous price of college (40k a year for a bachelors degree? come on!) is a bigger problem in my opinion (as a bachelors degree is almost a vanity degree anymore thanks to the higher education system) than the fact that the government wont pay for us middle income people to get a degree.

....and then when you subtract the costs of all the renovations that HAD to be made on our house, (and the cost of feeding 2 teenage boys and a Black Lab) we really don't have that much money.

I don't want to go to college anymore. I just found out I have to pay for my own dorms in college, so around 30k-40k in loans after I graduate. My parents aren't poor by any means... they made my brother do this also, but that's cause he had a 2.0 GPA at UT.
