View Full Version : Even The Fray Don't Enjoy Their Own Music

The Fray drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist David Welsh answer fan questions. Apparently they tour with a basketball hoop and fire pit, but they're not the athletic type? I didn't even know they were still doing interviews. Actually, scratch that, I didn't even know they were still relevant!

I've only heard the first two Fray singles, and they sound exactly the same. I mean, they're really great songs, but sometimes I'll start singing one and end up finishing the other.

They are lame sauce and the half decent thing to do would be to apologize for what they have done and quit.

This.
Solid tunes, great lyrics... It just feels like I've been listening to the same song for about 2 hours... that's their 2 records combined.

I really like their music. I don't think their songs sound that similar...

I don't think they sound similar either.
They're really good. They make really good music and are pretty down-to-earth guys.

if it ain't broke, don't fix it, they have a formula and they follow it well, hence, why they are still pretty fuckin huge despite what you indie hipsters may believe
the second half of that wasn't directed at you, it was the person doubting they're relevance, sorry for the personal attack lol

Profoundly worded in 12-year old fashion.
I guess I'll be the first to say that I can see the similarity people hear but I really enjoy both fray albums. Arguments of making similar sounding music can be made about a ton of groups by people who are too ignorant or elitist to hear the differences. Groups that people have made those arguments for include: FOB, Nirvana, TBS... the list could go on for quite awhile.
I liked some of the songs on the Fray's first album. When I heard their first single in 2005 I thought they were like a less egotistical/more mainstream accessible Coldplay. But as everyone here said all their stuff starts to sound the same, and they rode that first album for like 4 years.

Why did you make a thread linking to an interview about a band that you didn't even know was still relevant? Why are you promoting a band you don't like with a photograph of the members?

How To Save A Life is a good song. They integrated it amazingly on scrubs.

I guess sometimes a sentence is all you need. They are cheesey, repetitive and crappy live. I haaaaave....seen them. I listen to music in hopes of finding more things to love. With that being said, I would state mabye you sir are the elitist one in that my simple OPINION, of which you were not in agreeance was enough to piss you off and form pretensions about me and people who may have valid reasons for not enjoying the things you like.

I have also seen them live - twice - and would disagree with you. I judge a live performance based on emotional intensity, energy, and ability to truly play the songs and perform them well. The Fray managed all of that quite nicely. I was also very far from "pissed off" by what you said and am far from a musical elitist. I think that a phrase like this one:
the half decent thing to do would be to apologize for what they have done and quit.
is a clear cut sign of a musical elitist.

haha i was ready to be defensive (i don't even know exactly what hipster means..) but it's not like i don't like the fray. it's just geez, mix it up a bit from time to time.

The Fray aren't a bad band. They're nothing special, sure, but they're certainly not terrible. I'd probably place them in the higher echelon of artists that get much mainstream radio airplay.

The thing that makes the Fray unbearable isn't that their music is flat out the worst, it's that they are mediocre to the point where it is completely sickening.

I don't mind The Fray's live show. I've seen them as well and they're certainly not horrible live. Horrible would be off-key singing, out-of-tune guitars, and incapability. Maybe they don't put on as much of a show as a lot of bands out there, but I don't think that defines being horrible.
