maybe im a little older than most of the kids who buy music nowadays, but when I was 17 we just wore medium grey, black, and navy t-shirts, sweaters, boat shoes or vans and corduroy/khaki pants
now you kids love neon t-shirts, electro-pop, spandex denim and shutter shades. Its disgusting and you've ruined the VANS warped tour.

PS times change. By no means am I defending the trend but what the scene of music style will always change. I'm sure when these kids are 22 they'll say that the way the kids at warped dress is stupid too.

im not trying to complain too hard. its just that the bands that I listen to on the vans warped tour werent well received & and it just seems that what was once a punk-rock-piss-yourself festival, has become an electro-pop-sea-of-neon-vomit festival. but all-around pop/trendy music fest.

I like how people try to act like wearing black band shirts, khaki pants and Converse back in the day (just like everyone did) is somehow holier than the kids now all wearing the same outfits as each other. It's what kids do, they find someone elses image to define their own individuality, and for the average 15 year old, if you don't want to be one of those fucking Hot Topic goths or a loser...you dress the way that all the 'cool' kids do.
Don't try to act like we didn't do the same thing when we were 15. Sure, 'punk rock' or what-have-you wasn't as 'cool' and 'trendy' as it is now, but we still tried to dress like the people we saw in bands and in our scene who we thought were cool. We thought the Bouncing Souls were cool when we were 15, 15 year olds now think that Cobra Starship is cool, therefore the neon makes sense to me. It's also the same as all the kids who dressed like hardcore bands, emo bands (of the 90's), rappers, emo bands (of the 00's), blink-182, Green Day, MCR, blah blah blah blah blah. It goes on and on, and will forever go on.
Oh, and Kevin Lyman founded Warped Tour, so he can pretty much do whatever he pleases with it. Don't like it, start your own. Then, a couple years down the line, when you would like to keep the funding for your project going, and maybe even be able to afford a house (maybe even a nice one, I mean, shit, you bust your ass for that summer festival), you may go for some corporate sponsorships or bring in the trendy bands.
Or maybe you'll keep it punk and spend all summer helping smaller upstart bands and getting established acts not on Warped to come to your local venue, keeping them going.

Being at two Warped Tour dates in July, I can relate. There's still a handful of great bands out there, but, these phases come and go. The way I see it, it's a bastardization of the hair and glam metal scenes from the 1980's. I can even throw in new wave into the mix. But, then again, I don't see a lot of these neon, dance, or crunkcore bands playing their own instruments. It's a lot easier to just throw a musical act together and go for it, especially due to the internet being a fantastic way to network music to thousands of people. Unfortunately, "artists" that don't necessarily deserve careers are right in the mix these days. Hopefully, this will all pass.

yeah exactly MattADALIE. i keep seeing bands with keyboard players that are doing nada. Using backtracks is kinda shitty, but you better be really good if youre doing so... which they are not. for example watch the cobra starship performance on conan. unforgivable

I think punk is being who you want/ dressing however you want, regardless of what other people say and I hate "neon" people. Also, the people who are dressing like the aforementioned people at warped tour are probably dressing like this because a.) they want attention, no matter if it's good or bad, b.) they follow any trend that is popular, and c.) they are brainwashed and have no lives.

You know what's always in style? Co-opting relics of the '90s for ironic purposes (as in pokemon in an avatar). These kids nowadays, they're going to be, pssh, like, abducting stuff from the early '00s when they learn how rad this sardonic pop-culture wit is. They'll have that Chocolate Rain guy and the phrase "don't tase me bro" and you can be all "We had pokemon and 'keepin' it fresh,' the kids nowadays have stupid internet memes and Invader Zim. Irony is dead."
What I'm trying to say is, you're a tool.

ohhhhhh shit! called out! alright...yea, it happened. I went to two ICP shows and owned like all their albums (at least the one's they put out in the 90's). You're gonna have to believe me when I say that this was acceptable and even "cool" in 1998. By 2000 I was 20 years old and completely over those guys and the fad had passed but yea...i rocked the facepaint and went to 2 of their shows and all my friends dug them too...and we had girlfriends...it wasn't lame at the time....just like 10 years from now the highschool kids are going to have to justify the whole neon crunkcore thing as being "cool" as hard as it will be to believe in 2019 (which will likely be about the time that grunge will get a second wind and the kids will all be rocking flannels and doc martins again)
there, i came clean. thanks for calling me out on it, that was good. i'm still allowed to give the kids shit about this neon thing though. this is just as bad as ICP.

edit: or are you just suggesting the fashion trends of the current era is cooler? either way, I think you're wrong. the "skate-punk" look popularized by bands like BLink182 in the late 90's was better than this whole neon girl jeans thing, and the actual bands of the late 90's/early 2000's punk scene were better too.
i mean the bands were clearly better. who are the most popular and respected bands in the scene today? the same one's that were most popular and respected 6-10 years ago. I think neither is cooler. I think people who bitch and moan about neon have nothing more important to think about, and their minds can't get passed "ARRRGGHHH BRIGT COLORZ!!11" so they freak out about it and call it the death of punk, when people have been calling punk's time of death for decades.

so now i'm confused...you said you do think the neon trend is cooler, now you say neither is cooler. that's fine by me.
I don't bitch and moan about it, i previously stated that it is harmless and humorous. I didn't say anything to the effect of what you suggest above, like neon colors being the death of punk.
i personally don't know of any punk bands associated with this fashion style anyway, or has the definition of punk become so loose that Cobra Starship and Dance Party 5 or whatever are considered punk rock bands? The only newer punk bands I know of are bands like Dead to Me, Loved Ones, Gaslight Anthem, etc., and none of these bands are evenly remotely associated with the "neon scene" bands.

while the first half of your statement is the kind of rediculous shit I'd expect out of someone who isn't old enough yet to have developed respectable taste in music, I would like to point out that while yes, bands like the Bouncing Souls, LTJ, Blink182, etc. still play Warped, the difference is, in the late 90's, these bands were hungry and in their prime.
There is a big difference between seeing Blink 182 in 1997 than seeing them now. There is a big difference between the early 20's versions of RBF, LTJ, Bouncing Souls, etc., than there is now seeing them 30's & 40's versions of these bands.
They're all still good, but seeing them back then was to see them at their peak, in their prime, before most of them were big, when most of them were hungry and killing it.
i wish you guys could have been there, because the young bands of today totally lack the drive that these bands have.
and that's why these bands are still around; staying power. I think most of the young bands in today's scene will be long-forgotten and broken up in 10 years and will lack that staying power, but only time will tell and this is all jsut my opinion that i've formed after hanging around the punk/emo scene for about 15 years now.

so now i'm confused...you said you do think the neon trend is cooler, now you say neither is cooler. that's fine by me.
Ooooh-kay. I hate when I have to explain these things out. When I said 'Yeah, I'm gonna vote for girl jeans, oversized hi-tops and neon shades being cooler than anything you mentioned ', I was saying that I felt the waves of neon and girl jeans were cooler than JNCO's and alien shirts, which is about the same as saying 'Well, I'd much rather have a dick shoved in my ear than in my mouth'. I don't really want a dick in my ear, but if it's that or a schlong in my mouth, well, I'll choose the latter.
You strike a good point here, though. It seems that I never hear the kids who listen to these bands calling the bands 'punk', it just seems to be the angry, jaded punks assuming they do because theses kids talk about it on ap.net or these bands are on Warped Tour. (I'm not refering to you, just to people who act like this.) I think the old guys forget that one of the original Warped Tours featured Limp Bizkit. Just because Lyman wants you to draw in kids, definitely doesn't make you punk, or mean that the band wants to be considered 'punk'. I'm sure a lot of these pretty boy-new age glam rock bands (White Tie Affair) would shit their pants in shame if someone called them something as grungy as 'punk'.

Excuse me? Reel Big Fish? Mighty Mighty Bosstones? Social Distortion? Oh yeah, one of the founding bands of punk rock is shitty pop rock. You have got to be kidding me. Let's at least see a top 10 of bands you do like so I know where you're coming from.

I don't think Pennywise is amazing. but, they were a pioneer of the skate-punk sound though, along with NOFX and Bad Religion, and were instrumental in making that style popular in the 90's and helping Warped Tour develop into what it is today. You can still hear their influence today in bands like Set Your Goals.
Like them or not, they have cemented their reputation and have maintained a solid following for nearly 20 years now. They've put out 9 full length albums and have survived many changing trends in punk music.
I would hope you could at least respect that sort of accomplishment, but being that you're so young you've barely even begun to experience real life, you probably can't.

Alright Tex. If we're going to play the "well you're too young to understand what was going on" card, then i might as well point out that my Aunt, who saw minor threat/bad brains/fugazi when they were all starting out, also said it was quite lame, for the same reasons: it's yet another corporate attempt to co-opt the punk scene, which is what leads to all these shitty bands that you're whining about now.
A ton of those "awesome really great" bands that you're nostalgic about were the same bands that facilitated the neon fad. go read what the lawrence arms said about their brief stay on warped and stop looking back at the boring old good old days.

Warped Tour 2000 Mainstage Lineup included NOFX and Rancid, which in itself made it a pretty good year. AFI was there too, back when they were still good.
I've heard the "corporations are taking over, nachos are $10, Brenden Kelly hates Warped" argument a million times before (in person in fact, when the Larry Arms slept at my apartment back in 2002 after the Pittsburgh stop of the Plea for Peace tour)
Sure, you have too many corporate sponsors, but so what. you probably typed your last post with a Coke in one hand and brand name shoes on your feet. do you grow all your own food? do you sew your own clothing? i'm sure you support corporations every day of your life.
There are too many sponsors but it helps keep the ticket costs low. I can't believe that i'm still paying $20 for a warped tour ticket in 2009. It was $17.50 in 1997. That is hardly inflation at all, yet there are more stages & bands every year it seems.
What leads to these shitty bands are record labels looking to make quick cash off fashion bands and all the dumb teenagers that buy right into it and "put their fangs up". corporations aren't to blame, it's the kids that are so quick to bite on whatever trend is put in front of them, while these fake bands liek Cobra Starship just laugh all the way to the bank (as do their labels). Not sure what the Rockstar Energy Drink booth at Warped has to do with that.
which bands that i'm nostalgic about facilitated the neon fad? i'm curious to hear this. yea, RBF rocked neon? mike ness rocked neon? c'mon man, bands liek Cobra Starship is what started this crap.

stopped drinking soda, don't wear brand name shows, summer food comes from organic markets, most of my clothing is band t-shirts i traded for, but even then, my argument wasn't that "oh it's bad because it's corporate" since, in our globalized society it's becoming less and less possible to not support someone shitty.
my argument was that warped tour is corporations co-opting the punk movement, which is fairly different and something you don't seem to have a problem with until bands like Cobra Starship get popular (which is funny because you trumpet Rancid, who jocked good charlotte pretty hard back in the day, and NOFX, who talks shit on any band that actually follows their ethics, as good bands.)

Yeah, and for $20, i can go see 4 separate shows with bands that are actually worthwhile, support local scenes instead of giant corporate venues and see sets longer than 25 minutes. Sure, nowadays, warped is awesome if you live in bumfuck iowa that nobody cares about but before warped, bands actually used to go to those towns instead of skipping by them nowadays because they lack scenes.

I really just posted this to vent my frustration ab an event I used to look forward to all summer long as a kid, only to be disgusted by what I actually experienced. Same thing goes for the Bamboozle I did not attend this year or last year because it was awfully different from the past year before that.
I simply do not see any way these electro-pop-punk-dance-like-a-fairy bands can grow as artists, as the bands I used to worship like saves the day, jimmy eat world, brand new & numerous others have grown in the last 10 years.
****and btw, when I was 14 (& younger) somebody's mom or dad ALWAYS took us to Vans Warped Tour.
