View Full Version : Top Ten Albums of Recent Years

What are your top ten albums created in the last 15 years? I feel like it's more difficult (at least for me) to create a list if I can't let in the classics. Here's what I came up with:
Jimmy Eat World- Clarity
Alkaline Trio- Goddamnit
Radiohead- Ok Computer
The Descendents- Cool To Be You
Bon Iver- For Emma, Forever
The Gaslight Anthem- The '59 Sound
Death Cab For Cutie- Transatlantisism
Radiohead- Kid A
The Bouncing Souls- How I Spent My Summer Vacation
Bright Eyes- I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

List is way too alternative-centered.
Alternative is an incredibly broad genre. A large amount of bands that have made albums in the past 15 years are considered "alternative" in some way. You have a list to post?

I felt embarrassed to read this thread after I skimmed through the first page lol. I felt better once I saw more legitimate top 10 albums on the second page like TDAG by Brand New and a few Blink 182 mentions. I'm sure Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex" album should be mentioned. That album got a ton of acclaim and had almost as many singles as Micheal Jackson's "Thriller" album did.
No order:
The White Stripes - Icky Thump
Wolfmother - Wolfmother
Dead Meadow - Old Growth
Black Mountain - In the Future
Dredg - El Cielo
The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
Death - For the Whole Wold to See (was recorded in 1975, but never released until this year)

so your saying you would rather or think its more appropriate for your 14 year old sister listening to brokencyde than say anything.
i know which i would rather my little sister listing too.
it's not negative, it just boggles the mind. i find it hard to believe that any body who enjoyed anyone of the beatles albums, to have a brokencyde album in their favourite albums. if you can find anybody who finds that plausable to accept, i will stand corrected.

That's not what I'm saying in the slightest. Both are pop rock scene bands. Where does someone who adores Say Anything find the audacity to criticize someone else for enjoying another pop rock scene band?
i know which i would rather my little sister listing too.
I'd rather she listen to the band that doesn't have an affected sense of superiority, preaches against the underground like a spoiled, dejected brat while rallying against, wait for it, elitism and finds it ever so clever to sing about things like "I called her on the phone and she touched herself."

The Beatles are very accessible, timeless pop music. Virtually anyone, regardless of age, can appreciate them to varying degrees. How is that shocking? Moreover, why wouldn't someone who digs Brokencyde be able to dig Beatles when, assumingly, you can and you listen to Say Anything?

i refuse to accept say anything are a substancless band that are even remotely comparable to brokencyde. are you saying that say anything has equal substance as brokencyde.
I'd rather she listen to the band that doesn't have an affected sense of superiority, preaches against the underground like a spoiled, dejected brat with a fake sense of elitism while rallying against, wait for it, elitism and finds it ever so clever to sing about things like "I called her on the phone and she touched herself."
"I walk into the club looking kind of sexy now.
I see these shorties in the corner, they started making out.
They pull their panties down, They take their pants off."
i know your not arguing for brokencyde. and i know wow i can get sexual to is in a very similar vien to that. but you cannot put them on the same playing field as brokencyde. whilst bemis, who i agree has a elitest complex throughout some of his songs, which he seems all to self aware off cannot be compared to brokencyde by any stretch of the imagination. alive with the glory of love for example is completely absent of any elitisim and i personally think is an amazing song. and in no way, shape or form compares to anything brokencyde have ever or ever will make.

this is true, i cannot say that i listen to say anything and someone listens to brokencyde therefore my opinion is of a higher regard to theirs. i do however maintain it is a travesty to the beatles for somebody to include it in list next to brokencyde.

I'm saying, go listen to a wider range of music beyond scene trash if you're going to chastise others for also listening to scene trash.. Say Anything sucks as much as Brokencyde.
"I walk into the club looking kind of sexy now.
I see these shorties in the corner, they started making out.
They pull their panties down, They take their pants off."
I don't want my (theoretical) little sister listening to either of them, to be honest.
i know your not arguing for brokencyde. and i know wow i can get sexual to is in a very similar vien to that. but you cannot put them on the same playing field as brokencyde.
Yes, I can. Both make awful power-pop, with the exception of Brokencyde not trying to aggrandize themselves through their shitty music.
Seriously, once you expand your listening habits beyond the scene, I doubt you'll find Say Anything to be a considerably better band.
alive with the glory of love for example is completely absent of any elitisim and i personally think is an amazing song. and in no way, shape or form compares to anything brokencyde have ever or ever will make.
It's a boring, simplistic pop rock jingle that butchers Anne Frank's life as he places himself as her loving counterpart. It's not clever, profound, witty or anything of substance. It's just campy scene fare...much like kitschy Crunkcore (whatever the hell that is) that Brokencyde is.
i do however maintain it is a travesty to the beatles for somebody to include it in list next to brokencyde.

I'm saying, go listen to a wider range of music beyond scene trash if you're going to chastise others for also listening to scene trash.. Say Anything sucks as much as Brokencyde.
I don't want my (theoretical) little sister listening to either of them, to be honest.
Yes, I can. Both make awful power-pop, with the exception of Brokencyde not trying to aggrandize themselves through their shitty music.
Seriously, once you expand your listening habits beyond the scene, I doubt you'll find Say Anything to be a considerably better band.
Stop being a pretentious twat. It's not becoming of you.
I feel like I caught you cheating on me.

I mean I think its a great album but it just seems too long and drawn out to me to top some of their other work. We are the ******* of the world just seemed really misplaced to me and ruined the momentum of the album if that makes sense. I really do hope they keep up the same direction though, just more refined.

Rhetoric? Superior? Anyone can take a facet of recent history, turn it into a pseudo-edgy poem, construct a stock-standard pop rock composition around it to the adoration of 18 year olds in skinny jeans who have never heard nor care to hear music outside their compartmentalized scene shit.
"Come prepared?" This is no more "shitty rhetoric" than your pro-Bemis "poetic brilliance" propaganda. Come prepared next time. Oh, and listen to better music when you do. How are you twentyseven and in love with Say Anything?
Oh, and no, listening to the classic cock-rock stylings of Zeppelin and the ubiquitous Beatles doesn't mean you're well-traveled in the medium of music, before you invariably throw that little nugget of absurdity at me.

I'll probably regret this list later. But it's 1 in the morning, so why not.
The National- Boxer
Brand New- TDAG
The Mics- The Glow Pt. 2
Radiohead- Ok Computer (is this too old?)
Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Bright Eyes- I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
Okkervil River- Black Sheep Boy
Silver Jews- American Water
The Weakerthans- Left and Leaving
Have A Nice Life- Deathconsciousness (woo, curveball.)
edit: debating whether or not to put Fabulous Muscles on here...
After some consideration, I think I'll have to either replace The Glow Pt.2 with Mount Eerie, or just add it onto the list as well. Though I like some of the individual songs on The Glow more, I'd have to say that Mount Eerie is the more cohesive and impactful album overall. So that's that.

More Bon Jovi video commentary:
Why didn't the kid just take the stairs instead of drop off (in slow mo!!! That's wasting more time!) of the fire-escape? It would have been quicker. Also, the girl alerts him that he has five minutes to get to the rave, presumably because Bon Jovi will start the set within that time. However, the song commences just as she hangs up, and he arrives as they're finishing the song. What the fuck, Bon Jovi video?! Continuity!
And really, this kid has to know that slow mo won't solve anything. And when did it become cool to hitch a ride on the back of a garbage truck that's partially open? He'll smell like trash. That girl won't sleep with him if he smells like trash. That's the whole point of heading to the show, right? He wants to nail that broad. You gotta think this shit through.

RE: Bon Jovi video
The kid's fleeing from a ravenous pack of dogs (domesticated dogs that a dainty person was walking and controlling on her own, including a wiener dog) and, in an effort to maintain his lead, slides down a rail that runs in the middle of a set of stairs. Now, the rail is slowing him down considerably. Sure, it looks rad, as if he's truly "living his life" like his heart were "an open highway" and all that late '90s/early '00s attitude stuff, but it slows him down considerably and just makes him look like a douche.
For instance, if I went ass-first on a railing and slid my fine-butt down the length of it, what would you say? Would you want to hold that thing while walking down a flight of stairs after I rubbed my butt on it? Not only was it impractical, but it's an unsanitary, inconsiderate move. Fuck this kid.

Revenge of the Jovi:
So kid's running from the dogs...still (engaging!) and he runs into a pack of Elvis impersonators. He stops to take photos with them, then continues running. Did the dogs just stop and allow him to indulge in a nice photo-op before continuing to try and castrate him with their mouths?

Okay, so the freezeframe the kid running, then splinter the shot into four frames of the same frame. Why? It's so gratuitous and serves nothing except the kid looks like a douche when he runs.
The "whoa-a-whoa-a" sounds of the song that get butchered through whatever sound-effect they're using reeks of late '90s rave music. Jon is on the cutting edge of what's happening. Also, why does the girl page the guy saying "you're late. 911" What a misleading, disingenuous bitch. "Hey, there could be a major catrastrophe here; immediate danger." That's what 911 implies. He's probably fearful of for her life, not the fact that he missed the majority of this damn song. Don't play, girl. This dude smells like trash and almost got eaten by a dog that weighs 3 lbs...and he's wearing a jean jacket. Life is rough for him! Don't play with his mind like this.

Fuck this dude. He dives off a bridge some thirty feet above the ground, lands perfectly like he's Batman, nearly causes a tanker truck to fall over and another pileup, and instead of showing any remorse, for almost causing a calamity, disrupting a tanker driver's attempt to feed his fucking kids, and almost causing a massive wreck that could kill multiple people, he shoots a cocky, pretty-boy smile and keeps running. All of this to see forsty-tips Jovi at 38?! Well, mostly to get laid, but this girl is so adamant on seeing frosty-tips Jovi at 38? Do you really want to sleep with her? She lies and says Jovi is a 911 accident? She's not worth it, bro.

So we find out what's causing a massive traffic jam on the highway: Jovi! Apparently, Frosty the Jov Man and his crew of aging soccer dads took to the middle of a heavily-populated highway tunnel and just started playing, causing a seemingly-endless line of commuters likely trying to get to their places of employment. You know Jon, the people who aren't rich, just trying to put some damn bread on the table, but fuck 'em, right? You need to rock out! Fuck you, middle class! It's time for adult-contemporary ass-rock!

Video ends. Dude embraces his lady. She asks "where have you been?" For levity's sake, he responds "you wouldn't believe me." *chuckle, chuckle snort* You're right. She probably wouldn't believe you if you said "I leaped forty feet off a highway bridge and almost caused people to die instead of, I don't know, using mapquest and finding the fastest route that didn't endanger anyone" or "instead of running down my apartment stairs, which would have been safer and more timely, I dove off a fire escape onto a dumpster truck, which is why I smell of soiled diapers." You see, she evidently likes the kid, and wouldn't guess he was that much of a retard.
Also, Jovi ends the song by extending his arms out straight and doing something akin to jazz hands. This frosted tip badass rocks the jazz hands. Don't fuck with that cowboy.

dream revisionism eh? too bad i wasn't thanking bon jovi for the milkshake. of course i never received one, i was outside the store! after the milkshakes were purchased i merely thanked him for his refreshingly populist views. that night we became political allies and it's comforting to know the scribe who penned the new jersey anthem "living on a prayer" is grounded enough to support the local ice cream shop.
