Jared Kaufman

Taking Back Sunday (http://www.takingbacksunday.com) has made their best video since "Cute Without The E (Cut From The Team)." Watch the clip for the band's new single, "MakeDamnSure," right here (http://www.mtv2.com/#videoPremiere/1527669). Don't forget the track is taken from their new album, Louder Now, which hits shelves on April 25th; it comes highly recommended by yours truly.

HAHAHAHAHA (cannot.stop.slapping.my.knee). Dude, what are you doing on a computer / our website? Seriously, get up out of your chair and head to your local comedy club .. QUICK! Open Mic Night might not be that extravagent, but all legends have to start somewhere; you have a future in comedy and I'm very distraught knowing the talent you possess is being wasted in our forum.

MTVs website fucking sucks. I wish bands would stop debuting videos there. They should release them on their own websites in multiple formats for EVERYONE to enjoy.

I'm Canadian and don't get MTV2.
I have a Mac and can't get Windows Media Player 9.
Why must bands insist on using such a shitty method of getting their art, that they payed a lot of money to have made, out in a decent way? Can't they start releasing Video Singles on iTunes yet?

at first i thought the video was just really random, but the ending pulled it all together nicely, especially the last shot of adam/the kid blowing the dandelion or whatever. The song doesn't thrill me, but neither did the first song i heard off of "Where You Want To Be," and i LOVE that album.

Haha. When I first got into TBS and saw them live for the first time, I was seriously obsessed with Adam. I talked about the band, his stage presence/style, etc. ALL the time. It probably began to creep out of my girlfriend at the time and the family for obvious reasons. I had so much Taking Back Sunday paraphonelia it's not even funny. It died down a bit as I grew up .. a little, but after that video it might start picking up again. I hope he doesn't read this... (creepy -- looks around)

It's responses like this that make me want to leave absolutepunk.net... you attacked my post, so I'm going to explain myself. I'm not someone who is like OmGz I luv SCrEamINg. I myself am not a big fan of screaming in general. Only a few bands that I listen to heavily scream a decent amount (Thrice, Thursday). TAYF is my favorite album. The screams on that album I just feel give it more emotion. That is by no means why I like the album. As for my question, Tate made some comment like "its a good album to rock out to if you don't want any screaming." With Tate's usual pejorative feelings towards the band, I did not know whether he was just being a douche or not. So when I asked this question, I was just hoping Jared would clear things up for me. I was not hoping to get ripped apart by someone with a hair across his ass.

Um, I wouldn't say there's really screaming. There's really agressive singing, but it's not like Where You Want To Be where there seemed to be pointless screaming added in for "effect"; hope that makes sense.

I actually thought that the "Timberwolves at New Jersey" vid was their best even though they never widely released it. I just liked the whople concept better. Also, how do people know that a certain cd will be their favorite of the year after only hearing one song? Dont get me wrong, I cannot wait for Thursday's new cd but its impossible to say that it'll be my fave of the year with only hearing two songs.

First of all, this video was pretty cool some of the transformation things were kind of cheesy looking, but in general it was more enjoyable than most videos. my favorite part is adam jumping up and just eating it, that must of hurt.
2nd of all. There have been tons of awesome "frontmen" over time. Milo (descendents) henery rollins and up till now where there is geoff and both the blood brothers singers. There are TONS of awesome frontmen. That being said, I myself find it odd that I have to include adam to the modern list. But i dont think there is any denying that this dude is pretty insane. I saw Tbs play in a small club and a huge place. he is always exactly the same, puts tons of energy into the show and the mic fucking orbits around the dude. Many people say "he cant sing" how can he be a good frontman, well geoff (thursday) goes out of key a ton henry rollins just yelled like a maniac into the mic. it never mattered to me if a singer goes out of key or flat at times, i dont give a fuck at a live show as long as they are giving it everything they got and adam seems to do that all while giving the audience a sense of being part of something big. All the new emoish bands just seem to be copying what adam does best on stage.
ok people can stop calling me an eltist now that i discussed how i enjoy taking back sunday

anthony keidis needs to stop writing songs about california
......its a three part song
Californiacation is Part I
By The Way is Part II
Dani California is Part III
.............and anthony keidis can write whatever the fuck he wants, because hes fucking anthony keidis. the guy has such a sweet lyrical style and melody i love it. and of course the rhcp lineup is like an all star team.
I was a little dissapointed with this video. It reminds me way too much of the Foo Fighters "Best of You".

dude you gave them a 7.5 in lasting power umm that isnt to bad of a grade in my view unless your doing your scoring like school, in which case 1-6 are an F. if your doing that, well thats just stupid. If you arent then a 7.5 seems to be pretty good for staying power. Its a running joke between jared and me, notice that I was talking TO HIM, not you.
And you must not read any of my reviews, 7.5 is a low score. Its a solid C. If anything I scored was a D, I don't think I'd be listening to it more than once (and therefore not reviewing) ... Furthermore, clicking "help" on the review page gives you just that - help (which you need), and explains the scores (in a nut shell).

Fair enough. My big thing is when I see a live show, I want to see something more than just playing songs off the album. I can listen to the album whenever I want. When I pay $12-$100(in terms of Bamboozle, etc) to see a show I expect to see something different. I'm not saying that a band has to have a "crazy" lead singer or anything like that, I just want to leave the show feeling like I experienced something other than hearing the album live. Adam has a way of getting people into the show, getting people to have an "experience" moreso than Jesse, in my opinion.

Which is why the word "demo" is so fucking important. Hell, no one gives NOY shit, and they jack full on melodies, almost lyrics, and straight up song structures from Moz. Last album everyone said they were ripping off Bright Eyes, now after hearing DEMOS people think they're jacking Morrissey. Seeing as I worship the man (Moz) I'd be the most pissed at a copy cat album ... however, I'm able to act rational and actually wait for their cd.

We just have different expectations I suppose. I go to shows to see the band perform their songs, and entertain me, I don't go to hear the kids in the front row "sing" the songs. And the lead singer "do something crazy" for no reason then just doing it to keep up impressions ...

Agreed. It's one thing to not have much motion or anything on stage, but to not be into it is completely different. Thrice isn't one for movement, but I never once feel like they are bored on stage, and they make their songs come to life, as opposed to playing their songs live.
Now, I'm by no means saying Brand New is terrible live. THe only time I've seen them they were really good, but I just don't think that Jesse holds a candle to Adam in terms of entertainment value.

According to your emphasis on the word DEMO - it seems like Brand news recording process involves completely ripping off a smiths song and then spending a few motnhs finding ways to make it less like a smiths song. and NOY is huge rip off of the smiths its digusting, why listen to them when you can listen to the smiths i dont get it. and for the record, i have never gotten how people thought Brand new was ripping off bright eyes on deja entendu.

We definitely have different expectations...I mean, in my younger days I was all about getting close and singing along and what not...Now, I'm just like "Oooh...I don't wanna get all sweaty," but I hate to see a crowd that just stands there taking in the music. It's a concert, people should be singing/screaming along, having a good time. Maybe it's just a difference in our stations in life, you know? You deal with bands everyday, so it's nothing special for you to go to a show, right? Well, for a lot of kids, they might only get to see their favorite band rarely, or even once... How much more incredible is that experience for them if they get to be up close and possibly share a mic on a favorite song with their favorite lead singer...that's what live shows are about. And even now that I don't do that as much (I'll be honest, I did at the Boysetsfire concert because I've never seen them, and it was such a small crowd), I like to see bands give people that experience.
I think I'm rambling now.

dude sooo many of the old school punk bands (minor threat, black flag) did the exact same thing that adam does. They would fucking jump into the audience and even lose the mic at times, it wasnt just abotu a "performance" it was about being a part of something. I think CMJ has the best reviews, because they come without ratings. Ratings are just too easy; y'know, like "hey how's the album?", "oh its about an 8." CMJ just gives a really good idea of what to expect musically, withouth getting all overwrought and too passionate about mostly forgettable music (this site is guilty of that) or beating the crap out of easy targets (also, guilty).

i remember once you described going to your first mxpx show and how you loved being a part of that crowd, it seems like youve become a little more cynical now, understandbly so. I still think theres something to be said about bands with passion, thats why as much as i enjoy this new shift to indie music (death cab, brand new, bright eyes, bloc party) i cant help but think people forget that the point of music wasnt to put on a blazer and pretend your british. It all stemed to the first bands who didnt think they were any better then the audience they were playing to, they were only a means to get the audiences voice heard.

Am I wrong in saying that if it wasn't for "the scene" that you wouldn't be where you are right now? Running a successful punk/emo/whatever music site. I've read your rants on "being punk" and I agree...Punk is not a fashion, it's not a set of beliefs, at best, it's a philosophy. However, the music styles that have come from Punk Music are abundant in all of your site's content. Even when you make news posts about Kanye. If it wasn't for "the scene" the bands that you love would be playing coffee shops in their hometowns on open mic nights. It's because of the scene that you are able to do what you do...and that's have music as a business.
Now, before you jump to conclusions...there is a difference between "the scene" and "scene kids" or "scenesters." When I say "the scene" I am referring to the style of music that we all (I'd assume if we're all on this website) love. We may all not like the same bands or feel like certain bands are as good as others, but that's what makes the scene great. For instance, the majority of rap fans like whatever single is hot right now...there is no loyalty. At least in this scene, there is band loyalty a lot of time. That's what makes "the scene" great and it's what allows you to keep doing what you supposedly love. And to say that you "could care less" about that...it just doesn't seem right.

i remember once you described going to your first mxpx show and how you loved being a part of that crowd, it seems like youve become a little more cynical now, understandbly so.
I think engagin a crowd (mxpx, yellowcard, and even fob) is more important and better then exploiting them to sing your songs for you. I just don't get how adam has this reputation for being an amazing frontman, when he foesnt do anything that impresses me. I can swing a mic, toss it to the crowd, and act drunk. Hahaha. I think there are plenty of bands that stil have this "energy" you talk of, tbs isn't one of them *imo* and you're looking in the wrong places. Go see circa survive, etid, underoath, emery, or hit the lights and cartel even for what I'm talking about. Last time I saw midtown and brand new were awesome too ...

(creepy -- looks around)
don't take this the wrong way man, because i really respect what you do on this website. just curious though, how old are you? it's just strange to me that anyone over the age of 18 could be into this band. that's not to say that TBS sucks, but for me at least, as you grow up, you branch our musically and you kind of realize how average a lot of modern music is. this is not an attack on you, i'm just curious. i can't enjoy music like this after i started getting into Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, old blues stuff. does anyone know what i mean? i listened to TBS like crazy a few years ago, but i definately grew out of that whole genre. Most of the modern bands that i enjoy remind me of that kind of rock and roll (i.e. Mars Volta, Coheed, Strokes, etc...)
this is not a slam on jared or TBS, just a question.

Well, when I saw Circa Survive, Anthony Green was doing the same shit Adam does, minus the mic swinging. He spent more than half the show in the crowd, so I don't really see how that's any different.

The scale is something the majority of our users asked us to include. I was the one arguing against its inclusion. Our visitors wanted it ... and we listen to them, its as simple as that.
how can you judge an albums staying power before you have even owned it for a month? to me, that is a stupid part of the formula. that can't be answered for a few months, maybe a year.

i hear you. dont get me wrong, I understand there are better frontmen then adam, i was in no way saying hes the greatest. watching anthony green is awesome dude hits crazy notes with a ton of energy, same goes for the blood brothers. I just dont get why people hate on adam when he throws the mic in the audience since tons of bands who defined punk rock did the same thing, but i understand if it annoys. Cartel live bored me, they slow their songs down or something? dude does have a crazy voice though, but i dont like the music. if they sped up the songs they would be awesome i think.
and i dont think exploiting is such a good term to use, i highly doubt hes doing it cause he doesnt want to sing - he just enjoys it and it seems like the kids do to, me included

I don't understand why you can't enjoy different styles of music...
Sure, Zeppelin, The Who, Cream...classics...but, it's over 30 years old, man. It's one thing to respect them and their contributions, but it's another thing to use them as a fallback. Besides, comparing a band like TBS to a band like Cream is completely absurd...they're different GENRES of music. They come from different places, no? It's cool that you don't like this type of music anymore, but to say you think it's strange that people over 18 like them is just close-minded.

Please do, I'm curious to how you can say that AP.net is NOT part of a scene. This is not meant to be insulting or belittling. I just really think that this website is part of scene, well, to be fair a part of many different scenes. If you weren't, you would be posting country, rap, rock, techno, world, etc music news. Deny it all you want, but 99% of the news you post is either rock, punk, hardcore, indie news (Music related, that is. I am not referring to any of the glorious Snakes on a Plane news or the excellent Entertainment news column). The people that come to this site, despite the varied musical tastes that we all have, have one thing in common. We all love this "scene" of music. You can't deny that.
Oh, and please do not refer to the name "absolute punk" meaning nothing in terms of site content. I know this. It's just a name, it's the content that defines the site. I get that (see: above paragraph).

Well, he was singing for the most part, but he would put the mic down and also get down close enough that people can be heard on the mic.
On an unrelated note...
How did, once again, a message board get so skewed from the original topic, in this case, a TBS video? I vowed that I would never be a part of this...and now I am. Tis a sad day indeed. Ha ha...
I am, enjoying the debate/argument/discussion, however. I'm just thankful it's not a flame war.
MTVs website fucking sucks. I wish bands would stop debuting videos there. They should release them on their own websites in multiple formats for EVERYONE to enjoy.

I try to stay as far away from the scene as I can, because I don't like the direction its gone. By showing that someone who wears ralph lauren and has blond hair cut normally can still make an impact in this music genre(s) .... I think that's what matters to me most. I'm as far from what this scene has become. The music, sure, lump me and ap in, the style ... Fuck no. I want no part in it.

Aw dude. I wasn't lumping you in that. FUCK THAT. I guess that didn't come through clear enough when I said something about the difference between "the scene" and "scene kids". I hate the kids at shows that are wearing eyeliner, girl's jeans (ESPECIALLY the girls...lol) and all the cliche fashion/style accesories. That's definitely not what I meant when I was talking about "the scene." I think it's great when I go to shows and see people like you, completely not "dressed the part" to be at the show. I'm the same way...I go to shows in collared shirts and what not...and get the stares from these dumb kids who think that you can't enjoy the music if you don't enjoy the fashion.
Ever see SLC Punk! I was always think of people like us as Mike...the guy who's as into the music as anyone else, but doesn't look like he is because he doesn't dress like the stereotypical punk.
Oh, and to bring it full circle...I think that it's even cooler when people like you or I are in the front row, singing along with the band, showing these "scene kids" that just because we don't dress like extras from "Queen of the Damned" we can't enjoy good music and the energy and everything else.
Oh...and SAN DIMAS HIGHSCHOOL FOOTBALL RULES!

They never made the audience sing 90% of the songs though. And I've never been bored at a brand new show (slr, copeland, mae are another story). And jesse was by far the better front man ...
Lacey is a mediocre frontman at best. Leave him in the back room writing all those great lyrics. Last TBS show I went to they didn't twist anyones arm to sing along it was group participation.

NO Jason you can't swing the mic, not like Adam can . More frontmen have lost teeth , broke noses, black eyes and smacked the crap out of everyone and everything around them. Adam has taken this to an art form and if you ever go to an arena show of thiers you see him do all this and not miss a note. Your attitude towards Adam is showing through. You should stay with Lacey and leave the rest alone

Anyone else think that it's been that long since tater has wseem the band? Who has seen them lately? All i keep reading about in the sites and in the press is how great they are, maybe a band gets better after a few years and adding a few members who are better musicians? Idunno, i think jason should have to go to a show in this year at least and then report his honestly opinion, this one from forever ago holds no weight. Anyone agree? Who has seen them on this tour yet? would love to hear about it..

I think you're misunderstanding me. My whole obsession with Taking Back Sunday occured right before Tell All Your Friends came out and when it was released. My girlfriend at the time cheated on me, got knocked up and we broke up. That album at that time changed my outlook on so many things and was everything I needed to get me through. I know, I know; we were young, it wasn't really love, etc., but it sure as hell was therapuetic. I went on to listen to the CD every day for almost two years. I've had another crap situation with a girlfriend/ex-girlfriend lately and I resorted to playing it again; not to be lame or anything, but just for the mere feeling I get when I'm singing-a-long to every single word. Taking Back Sunday is by no means on that same pedestal as they were 4 years ago with me, but I'll always want to listen to their music (their new album is great) see them live (seeing those songs live still give me chills), etc. My taste have evolved quite a bit and I'm by no means really into "this kind" of music anymore. Go check out my user profile and look at the list of bands; I do love stuff like TBS, FOB, MCR, etc., but it's all fun to me -- I'm really more so into the indie-rock and more mature stuff these days.

Im right there with ya on this one. I don't really listen to TBS anymore but I came home on leave after Marine boot in May 2002 and picked up that cd. With all the girl shit that happened to me while in boot camp, this was the perfect cd and for that I don't think I can ever really bash this band. I'm not obsessed at all but that cd occupys a little space in my head.
