Ergs, The - That's It...Bye
Record Label: Don Giovanni Records
Release Date: Late 2008

Ask anyone who was a fan of them, and they'd tell you that New Jersey's The Ergs! were one of the best bands in pop-punk. They had a great track record that spanned several EPs, numerous splits, a compilation record and two full lengths. So, needless to say, on September 7th, 2008, when the band decided to part ways, it was a blow to pop-punk. However, before calling it quits, The Ergs! decided to release one last record, That's It...Bye. It's a bittersweet title, but a welcome addition to the band's catalog.

The record starts of with the song "Anthem for a New Amanda," which showcases The Ergs! at their best. What I always loved about The Ergs! was their absolute sincerity, no matter how light-hearted or jokish they came across. This sincerity shines through in this song, especially when drummer/vocalist Mike Yannich sings "I need an anthem for a new Amanda / One that doesn't hate my guts."

The second song, "....And the True Believers" follows in the same vein of the first track, but that's entirely welcome when we're talking about damn fine pop-punk. It's short and fast, and yet almost longing at the same time. And thus, we conclude Side A. Side B only has one song on it, "Piltdown Man." As most of The Ergs! fans know, Yannich and guitarist Jeff Schroeck often share vocal duties, and so on this track, Schroeck takes the mic. This song has a slightly sadder tone, and in the wake of the band's breakup, the song becomes even more depressing. That being said, lyrically, the song is the standout track with allusions to the infamous Piltdown Man to correlate with self-discovery.

It's a short record, but as last releases go, That's It...Bye is as solid as it gets, and the EP really epitomizes the band's sound as a whole. However, without The Ergs!, pop-punk continues its solid decline, and Yannich puts it perfectly when he asks "When will everything be ok? / I guess your guess is as good as mine."

Sadly, no one will read this review or listen to them.

It's ok, because we have Mayday Parade and All Time Low!

Haha. I've only barely listened to this band. Hopefully I get some time to check them out soon.
