simple enough.

I honestly liked Harry Potter better because of it's simple story telling. Tolkien went into huge detail, so much so that sometimes I got lost in his words.

Lord of the Rings is classic, but Harry Potter is better.

At times I found LOTR difficult to read, but I was also 12 at the time. The Harry Potter series are my favourite books, I can read them again and again and not get tired of them.

LOTR if we went movies. and if it was more complex better books, i'd prolly say LOTR. but HP played such a major part in my life.

super tough question...

in terms of movies: lord of the rings but just... only because harry potter misses so much. the war scenes are amazing. that could change though, if the battle of hogwarts scene is done well.
in terms of books: harry potter... ive never read lord of the rings... i tried after the movie... but just didnt have enough patience.

They're not even comparable really, in terms of style, story, and writing. Tolkien wins hands-down in all categories. The Potter books are a fun little read, but that's it.

The Potter series lost all credibility when it introduced time travel. If time travel is possible, there's no need for any drama whatsoever.

I love them both, but they're not even close to being the best fantasy series out there. The Malazan Book of the Fallen wins there. Followed by A Song of Ice and Fire, The Wheel of Time, and a bunch of others.

08/20/09, 07:05 PM
My parents bought me the animated Hobbit movie when I was about 10 or 11...next thing I know I was reading the book and then Lord of the Rings throughout 6th and 7th grade. It was a pretty big part of my life, so I am pretty biased when I say LOTR.

I did read the first two HP books though, but it didn't do anything for me.

although I agree with what you're saying about time travel, the fact that she incorporated that into her story should not deem her entire series irrelevant.

Harry Potter, LOTR is just too damn long. That doesn't make sense. The Harry Potter series has vastly more pages than The Lord of the Rings.

I don't understand how Harry Potter is winning. The whole universe Tolkien created is so complex. He created entire languages and had vast histories of numerous civilizations. Plus that part when Harry died kind of ruined the book for me. He should have stayed dead.

The thing is, at least for me, the level of detail makes his books difficult to get into and easy to get lost in. It takes time to get past the initial confusion. With Harry Potter, it was easy to get into the books and the characters were relatable. I think that's what makes them so appealing. I do agree with you, though, that when Harry died it was pretty weird and a bit too unbelievable.

Plus there's the fact that HP is a kids series while LOTR was obviously intended for more mature readers that don't need spoon feedings.

I've only read them about 3 times each but i still have that entire poem memorized:

three rings to the elven kings under the sky,
seven to the dwarf lords in their halls of stone,
nine to the mortal men doomed to die,
and one for the Dark Lord on his Dark Throne,
in the land of Mordor where the shadows lie

One ring to rule them all,
one ring to find them,
one ring to bring them all,
and in the darkness bind them,
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie

I'll always choose a Zune4GB over a Nano4GB. I just find the zune to have a better design and a better interface. And yes the ZuneHD is the coolest device I've ever seen, I'll be getting one for sure.

Be prepared for a rant here. Grab some popcorn, some soda-pop, and maybe even a fleshlight just in case you get bored.

In my opinion, Harry Potter was just too simple and predictable until the end where everything went all out unbelievable. However, becasue the first six books had been pretty easy to figure out and because of how predictable they were, you could see where it was going, and how it would end up (even though Voldemort seemed to win a lot, it was always counteracted by friendship and love and that crap later, after about three or so HP failures,) So that just kind of made it a little too simplistic for my liking. In the vein of a guilty pleasure almost.

While I agree that her writing is unbelievable at times (HP's death for example) I find that fact to be counteracted by the predictability of her writing.

Tolkein was a freaking genius. His details were original, thoughtful, and yes dense. I don't find that to be a bad thing. If I can see every detail the author wants me to see, and if I can enjoy a great plotline as well, why wouldn't I want to? I usually hate fantasy novels, but J.R.R. Tolkein is something else.
