View Full Version : The "I-V-vi-IV" Thead
If you don't know what "I-V-vi-IV" means, pass over this thread.
If you do know what it means, list songs that come to mind that utilize this progression. My friend and I are trying to compile a master list for fun and any addition is helpful ;-)

off the top of my head...
Hellogoodbye- Here In Your Arms (both verses and choruses)
New Found Flory- Hit Or Miss (Right off the bat...chorus)
Mercy Mercedes- Outta Time (everything)
Sherwood- Song In My Head (verse)
SR-71: Right Now (Chorus)
Boys Like Girls- Hero/Heroine (it actually only goes V vi IV pre-chorus then I V iv I for the chorus...close enough)
I never knew what it was called. I always just called it (or thought of it) as top hat chords because of the pattern of the chords on a guitar neck.

Yes there is more than one exception to the rule. It's not my rule. Yes it was an exaggeration, but you cannot deny that blink-182 has completely ruined that chord progression by beating that dead horse to its death in the afterlife.

David, last time I checked, I think that had a new blink thread been posted that day, you would've made the top posters. I find that humorous haha

If you think their music is bad, why don't you go out and make some music that is just as "bad" and get as big as them.

You like bad art. You support bad artists who create bad art. You're feeding a trend that fosters mediocrity.

And you do realize that you're supporting a way of living that includes no excitement at all. Sure bands like blink-182 may not write poetic lyrics or the best riffs, but they're a fun band to listen to. And I presume, the art you appreciate is the art that takes a degree in English to understand.

How can you substantiate whether a lifestyle is "exciting" or not? THe guy in my avatar was smarter and more poetic than anyone you'll ever encounter in today's world, and he was all about indulgence and excess. The fact that you're trying to set this up as an "underdog vs. elitist academic prick" argument only shows how idiotic you really are. If you think my disdain for Blink is because I can listen to it once through and understand everything and not have to think, you're wrong. They're simple, shallow, and are popular for bad reasons. I resent their fame and their mediocre bullshit. In fact, to me they represent why capitalism is a bad system by being proof that mediocrity flourishes.

Who is he?
"Who is he?" is correct. Even if the man in your avatar was smarter and more poetic than anyone I'll ever encounter, doesn't make him the smartest person on the earth. Intelligence is always growing, because curiosity never stops. Blink's intention when they put an album like Enema of the State wasn't to become as famous as they are now, it was to put out an album for people to enjoy. They are only as popular as their abilities lead them to be. For example, if they have the ability to write good and catchy music and the ability to write bad poetic attempts, which one would they excel in? The good and catchy music of course, because people excel in what they do best and there is no stopping that.

It's Oscar Wilde, first off, and he's a genius. Absolute fucking genius. This whole post is meaningless and stupid. Your argument is, "if I can be good at being mediocre, I'd rather do that than fail at being good." It's an argument against trying to be good. You like things that wallow in being subpar.

Everyone's definition of good music is different from one another. So by saying blink is mediocre is being extremely biased against them.

Then explain their recent shows to have 20,000+ people. If that isn't a good thing, then your definition of good is obviously biased towards something else.

I never said that. There are amazing bands--like The Beatles and Radiohead--who are incredibly popular; however, there are shitty bands that are popular too. Bands that cater to what people like tend to be popular. Of the two bands I mentioned, only Radiohead is really anomalous; early Beatles caters to what people like (pop music) and then they went and did their experimental stuff.
