I will try to be careful because i am not an expert on the european leagues, but i was arguing with a friend over which league was the best. I thought it was Serie A in Italy but you can make a case for a few others.

best is subjective.

Italian - slow-paced, low pressing, wing based attacks... teams built from the defence forward basically - i wouldnt say it was the most exciting, but has a high proportion of quality teams (Juve, Milan, Inter, Roma)

Spanish - fast-paced, low pressing, basically non-contact which is annoying... very varied in the way teams attack, probably the most 'skillful' league, and imo the most entertaining as well... huge amount of quality teams, and every year there manages to be a surprise team as well. (Barca, R Madrid, A Madrid, R Betis, Valencia, Villareal, Sevilla). I watch the Spanish league as much as i can, but the diving (or 'simulation...') annoys me no end.

English - fastest pace, high pressing, high-contact, marginally skillful... as a whole the english football league system is the best, no other nation has such a high proportion of competition upsets, with low league teams beating premiership opponents... combines skill with the physical nature of the game.

German - well... arent there only 3 german teams? Bayern, Shalke and Werder Bremen... pretty boring league imo.

French - poor... Lyon are simply stunning, but other than them the league isnt good at all... i watch Monaco games when theyre on, but im never impressed even though i like the club.

i've only ever watched MLS on ocassion, seemed very slow... not my cup of tea, i prefer pacey games, like spanish and english.

I voted the Spanish Primera, but the EPL is my religion, simply because I'm able to watch like 6 games a week. The MLS is absolute shit. I hope the Red Bull money gets the New York team some good foreing players, because the entire league is just shit. I wish I was around for the New York Cosmos. That lineup gives me chills.

You make H-ton sound like it's Montauk. lol. It's really not worth the drive, unless they give out a lot of Red Bull. That would make it worth it to me. There is an interview in todays NY Times with the Chief Executive of Red Bull or something. It's in the soccer part of the sports section and is a totally worthless interview, but I thought I should mention it.

trust me man, there are people who appreciate soccer in the usa. but a vast majority of americans are stupid and stubborn, and they can't understand the beauty of a game that may only end 1-0. One of the best soccer games i saw ended 0-0, i forgot who played, it was a couple of months ago, i think it was man u and arsenal. the other problem is that our soccer isn't very skillful so we do not have a good product to watch. I'm pretty sure that most of our mls teams would match up with the teams in the second league in england (the one under the premiership, i forget what it is called.) Even then they probably wouldn't have a winning record against those teams.

frankly, i love soccer. I think crossing a ball from the corner to a guy running to the far post and for him to take that ball and put it in the top corner of the net with his head is pretty much the hardest thing to do in sports. american's can't appreciate this.

it's called the Coca-Cola Championship, and to think people don't like the New York Red Bulls. God bless consumerism. lol

I'd put the MLS on par with Division 1, solely because every year a few Championship teams beat Premiership teams in the FA and Carling Cups. of course a division 1 team did win this year against a certain team (goddamn grimsby town).

The two sports that fit the most perfectly into the american theme of sports are soccer and rugby. Rugby more so then soccer. Rubgy has so much action and hits and something is always happening. I relaly don't understand why people haven't tried to show this more in America.

I think the reason these sports aren't big here is because there are no timeouts, no stoppages in play. Americans need a reason to flip through the channels and watch something new for two minutes and then go back to what they were watching. Also if they're were commercials, more money would be put into the sport, which would broaden its exposure, etc.
I remember how when i was younger (I'm 17) and everyone my age played soccer, people would say how since we play soccer, we would continue to watch soccer and the sport would evolve and we would become very good at it. This really hasn't happened at all.

Sorry to make this so long.

do any of you that follow european football (pretty much all of you seem to live in europe) find it to be a problem that the same teams are at the top of the divisions every year? This is the only thing about the sport that gets me down. Every year we know that Lyon will dominate the french league. Chelsea and Man U dominate in the premiership. You can pencil in Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter as the top three in Serie A. Celtic, Hearts, and Rangers in Scotland. Bayern Munich seems to win the bundesliga every year. The primera seems to be a little more competitive but barcelona and real madrid still seem to be powerhouses.

Doesn't this trend annoy anybody? In American sports, the teams are not as predictable. During the last baseball season, the Chicago White Sox came out of nowhere to win the World Series and they hadn't won the championship in like 90 years. The lack of different champions makes european soccer a little predictable.

last year, everyione was predicting Everton to either be relegated or finish in the lower half of the table. They came out of no where to finish fourth. Blackburn won the Premiership in, i believe, 1995. Wigan this year has challenged and could get a place in Europe, same with West Ham. You also omitted Arsenal and Liverpool, but I'm sure that was just an oversight. Then again those teams are, respectively, french and spanish.

Hearts hasn't challenged the Old Firm the way they have this year in ages (That being said Celtic clinched. No last day tears this year). Also, there was more talk of this a few years ago (When Rangers weren't absolute shit), but some people want Celtic and Rangers in the Premiership, because their budgets are close to the same of the top English teams and years above the rest of the Scottish teams.

Roma occasionally mixes it up in the Serie A, and although I don't follow it, I believe that a newly promoted team or something was like third a few months ago.

The French League, ah what can i say. they're french. PSG and Marseille suck this year. Lyon is easily the best team.

The Primera has a lot of variation in the top 4.

All the teams that you have mentioned have HUGE budgets. The only exception is PSG and Lyon. PSG has the biggest budget in the league while Lyon's isnt as big.

The way to compare this would be with baseball (the only american sport without a salary cap). The best teams in baseball right now are the Yankees, the Red Sox, the White Sox, A's, Mets, Braves, and the Cards. All of these teams have two things in common. They will all (except the A's) draw near or over two million people this year. This in turn allows them to spend a large amount of money and (theoretically) produce a better team. Although the White Sox "came out of nowhere," it wasn't like they had finished last in their division the year before. Also, the champions of these soccer leagues are all based on 38 games where you play each team twice. With baseball there are som many more games and you record can change depending on if you are in a very easy division (NL Central or West) or a very hard division (AL East).

Maybe some europeans can explain that better and with stuff about tradition and how it creates rivalries and excitement, but thats all i have.

i see your point, but i still think that it is harder for a team to succeed in the european leagues. But still, most of the teams you mentioned that were challenging topped at at third or fourth place, and that might still put them 20 points out of first.
In baseball, there are a bunch of teams with money. I mean the White Sox were 13th in payroll and they dominated in the playoffs last year. Plus, there are a bunch of teams that i could say have a chance to win this year (yanks, red sox, indians, white sox, blue jays, angels, a's, mets, braves, phillies, cardinals, astros). All those teams definately have playoff aspirations and they have a chance to win. You can't say the same about the soccer leagues.

I understand your point as well, but for a team to go from no where to finishing third and playing in Europe or in a cup final, is a huge deal. The equivalent, IMO, of the Cubs (because they sucked last year) coming out this year and making it to the World Series and losing to the yankees or whoever.

I honestly can't remember who had the best regular season record last year, but normally it is a team like the Yankees and the Cardinals, the teams that have the highest payrolls and are regared as the best teams in their leagues. The EPL, for example, is a regular season that has no playoffs at the end. That arguement still doesn't fully prove my point, but i think it adds a little more insight.

EDIT: btw, Chaminade beat St Anthony's in lax today. Chaminade played horribly and then St. Anthony's would score a goal and look like they would come back, but then just fall apart. Just felt the need to say that. lol

Spain ill agree with, but the Italian league has possibly 5-6 great teams and then a load of pretty rubbish ones (Juve, Milan, Inter, Roma, Fiorentina). English league has a lot of very underrated teams in it along with the powerhouses like Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool... this year the english clubs didnt do too well in CL, but usually you can expect a few to remain into the latter stages... as well as english clubs always remaining until the latter stages of the Eufa cup.

i'd put EPL above Serie A

i voted La Liga (Spain) and i don't agree with the notion that someone presented that EPL is the fastest paced. More upsets, perhaps, but i think Spain has a much more fast-paced game due to the lack of true physical players (except Graveson). i agree it is lacking in contact, but probably the most fun to watch and lots of very underrated teams.

instead of MLS it should have been the Portuguese league. highly entertaining and fun to watch, and let's not forget that Porto won the Champs League 2 years ago.

although Lyon is a stunningly good team, i think Portugal and the Dutch League should be on this list ahead of France.

Totally.

Players like Deco and Ronaldinho are pretty much just like entertaining showmen as opposed to footballers.

Ronaldinho also pwns the living shit out of Ronaldo. That's the brazilian Ronaldo. Not Christiano.Ronaldinho and Ronaldo are different kind of players. Ronaldinho is the one who creates the oportunities and Ronaldo is the one who scores.

well Valdes is a rubbish keeper anyway, but one moment of brilliance doesnt really make up for a whole 2 seasons of utter rubbish

I missed this thread.

The answer is the Premiership. It has everything. La Liga is second i'd say. Seria A has gone down the pan since the mid 90's when it was the biggest/best in the world.

I just watched the MLS game of the Red Bulls and the Revolution. It wasn't horrible. Once you got over throwing up about how ugly the Red Bull jersey is, it was a pretty good game. I'd rate it as an upper English Championship level game aka better than the relegated italian teams. lol

Oh well, The Premiership is the best league.

Spain ill agree with, but the Italian league has possibly 5-6 great teams and then a load of pretty rubbish ones (Juve, Milan, Inter, Roma, Fiorentina). English league has a lot of very underrated teams in it along with the powerhouses like Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool... this year the english clubs didnt do too well in CL, but usually you can expect a few to remain into the latter stages... as well as english clubs always remaining until the latter stages of the Eufa cup.

i'd put EPL above Serie A
could you really count Juve on this one?

this thread is pretty old, but when Juve is back in Serie A for a year or two, I'm sure they'll buy another title. If a Manchester United youth player died, would every Premiership player wear an armband? i doubt it.
Juve is still a great team, even if they are a bunch of cheats.

I still think that La Liga is the best. Serie A is boring, French league is a waste, the Premiership is fun to watch, but has little technical skill compared to others.

La Liga
Serie A
Prem
Bunda
french league
Dutch
Portugal
Scotland
then Sweden and Russia I guess. The K-League is probably in there, as well as the MLS and the J-League.

From my limited knowledge and fifa videogame experience, even I know the MLS is shit compared to other leagues.

It was up during the World Cup, so I guess some Sports forum people, and visitors, thought it would be funny to vote for the MLS.
