Forgive me if there's already an existing thread on said topic. However, the search function didn't come across any results. I expect this thread to be prodominantely inhabited with and by Australians but if you're familiar with the game then join in the discussion :-)

I'm not an Austrlian but I follow the AFL. I didn't have any real team preference but a good friend of mine supported Essendon and I'm now happy to say they're my team.

basically the there are 4 sticks t the end, and you get 6 points for getting it in the goal, and 1 point gettin it in the goals to the side. If that makes much sense lol
And also its great that the lions are back up there this year!

They're 19-1 and sitting two games clear on top of the ladder with two rounds remaining. It certainly looks like you'll be the minor premiers.

I'm so proud of my Melbourne boys winning our fourth game of the season. Fremantle don't travel well but it was a good win regardless.

Kicking twenty goals and winning by sixty points is always a good effort against any side. Carlton and St. Kilda should be difficult games though.

I think we've been aiming to secure the priority selection for a while now. Melbourne supporters and coaches aren't going to be too disappointed if we don't win another game for the year. We've got some talented young players coming through which gives great reason to be optimistic about our future :-)

They actually have a better list than a lot of people give them credit for. May I ask who you see winning the premiership this year?

It's difficult, but if I had to choose I'd say St. Kilda. They've proven themselves to be the best side the competition to this stage. Who do you think?

You still think that Geelong will win? :-0 They haven't been very impressive over the last couple of months and people are starting to have some serious doubts about whether they can maintain the form they've been displayed the last few years. I'll watch the Youtube video now. It sounds like it was one of the games of the season.

I'm two days late but the Essendon vs. St Kilda match was amazing. I was so nervous at the end, it was too close for comfort, but I'm very glad we won.

I didn't manage to catch the game at home so I went to this bar in Soho that loads of Austrlian ex-pats watch the AFL in. Great atmosphere, I'll probably go again. Lots of Bombers fans who were holding their breath at the end of the match.
Thank you! I'll get back to your comment very soon I promise.

I'm still confident that Geelong can find some form. The Essendon game was so amazing. Although I'm really quite biased. We had three players who couldn't come back onto the ground because they were injured, and another three who were carrying slight injuries that had to keep playing. Despite being completely run off of our legs we managed to beat the previously undefeated side in the league. It's on tomorrow afternoon if you get the chance to watch it.

My only real concern is their midfield actually reading the ball off Sandilands. We should be able to run Fremantle off their legs on an oval like Subiaco. Although in saying that, we did come off a tough game against St.Kilda last weekend

It's like a mini final for us this afternoon. Their star forward has been suspended and we've included some really good players into the side. I won't say I'm confident, but we've got quite a good chance of winning if we're hard at the ball and our pressure's up.

Didn't realise this thread existed. Happy the Dogs picked up Hall. They were already the highest scoring team for the the last two seasons I believe, but he'll definitely help in the big pressure games, especially finals. If he isn't reported for something, that is. I'm guessing Fev won't go anywhere either. He's far too expensive. Voss said he'd have a look, but no idea if anything will come out of that. Having Brown, Bradshaw and Fev in a forward line would be awesome to see though.
Also, disappointed Cats won. Can't stand them, even though they're the closest team to where I live. At least Storm did better. That makes up for it.

Yeah, him and Boak will have to own that midfield with the Burgoyne's gone. Haha, yep, Oberon High School. He was the year above me and Pat below. I never talked to Travis, but I knew a lot of his mates. I did know Pat though and we played basketball against each other.

Haha, indeed. They both look to be solid players in the future too. Pat did get Ricciuto's number. I'm a Bulldogs man. I was devastated when they lost to the Cats and Saints in the finals. Both could of been wins. It'll be cool to see what Hall adds to their forward line. He was still playing really good before he left Sydney.

Definitely. It'll give more room to all their small forwards too who are all capable of kicking goals if they double team Hall. Jonno is getting fairly old now as well so can't rely on him as much. It's great watching them when they have their running game on. Lake really stepped up his game this year too. I thought he was the best full back this season.

Hopefully, he will. Not many defenders try to mark it in full back so it's always great watching. We've come third the last 2 years so they need to step up that little bit more.

Yeah, third place is nice and all, but it still isn't good enough. They've got a good young list, but they need some of those older guys with experience in the finals. Aker, Jonno, Eagleton and Hudson won't be around for much longer.

Agreed. Yeah, the Saints really dominated this season. Would of been good to see them win the flag since they've only won one before. Same with the Dogs. I'm hoping Geelong aren't as good next year either with the assistant coach gone. I expect Hawthorn to be back up around the top injury free and with Burgonye and Gibson in the team.

I'm hoping he does well, but I wouldn't put money on it. From what I've seen he's very athletic so if he can pick up the skills he should be alright. I'll be definitely watching how he goes. The salary cap in League is pretty messed up isn't it? I wonder if more League players will try to make a move to the AFL.
I believe so. That and cricket. They were almost going to make the team, they even had a sponsor lined up. Then the AFL decided to go with the Gold Coast and Western Sydney. They have a stadium already so it makes sense. Hawthorn would probably be the closest to a home team since they play a fair few games there.

So annoyed the Hawks lost. They were all over the place in the last quarter and gave some easy goals away. I think they could be a top 4 side along with the Saints, Dogs and Cats. Once they get their ruckmen, Burgoyne and Hooper back they should be firing.

Haha did he have any years left on his contract or did he just leave? Collingwood could push for a top 4 spot even though they nearly lost to Melbourne (lol), but I can't see any other teams doing it from what I've seen so far. Adelaide were hyped up before the season, but they've been disappointing so far.

not sure to be honest. but i was unimpressed.
yeah collingwood are the only other team who could push it.
yeah adelaide dont seem to have anything at the moment. its hard to see where they're gonna get something from judging by how they've played so far.

04/29/10, 12:20 AM
Most definitely. I haven't been tipping, but if I was I would of picked Saints, Brisbane, Hawthorn and Geelong. Hawthorn have been completely disappointing. They keep getting more and more injuries. No chance of a top 4 spot any more, they'll be pushing for a top 8 if they're lucky. I think my top 4 will still be the same except replace Hawthorn with Collingwood.
yeah i picked all those bar brisbane. ive been impressed with the dees so thought theyd have a chance so tipped them as a roughie. paid off which was good.
yeah hawthorn have been dismal, as have adelaide. collingwood have been pretty devastating.

Good call. After they destroyed the Dogs I didn't think Melbourne would have a chance. It's a pretty big match for Adelaide this week against Port. I wonder if they'll finally step up. They showed glimpses of good performance against the Dogs last week, but they couldn't keep it up. Collingwood are definitely doing good at the moment. Only game they've lost is to the Saints and it was pretty close the whole time.
ive given up on adelaide. have tipped them a couple weeks thinking they would finally get their act together but to no avail. i cant see them beating the mighty port. especially with them coming off a great win against the saints.
it could be a closer race at the top this year than i first thought.

They weren't so mighty the week before haha. Port should win though. I'm hoping the Cats lose a few more games. Even better if they don't make the top 4, but that seems unlikely.

A few teams are starting to catch up with some really good trades and younger guys getting more experience. The Cats have a couple who are doing alright, but they have some injuries like Scarlett too. It doesn't matter this week. They could have half their team out and still beat Richmond.
hahaha richmond. they're a joke. i feel sorry for them.

Apparently Folau might be going to the AFL to play for GWS. If it does happen it'll be another win for them. More exposure to footy in the two states dominated by rugby with Hunt and Folau if he defects.

im not a fan of all these defects and imports from ireland and all this nonsense. its just all for publicity and to expand the game. im really keen to see how hunt actually does and see if he's as good as they say he is. i find it hard to believehe'll be able to step into the most elite form of the game and excel seeing as he hasnt played before. its one thing to be able to kick, handpass and tackle, its another to actually be able to read the game and understand it.
TheFury
04/29/10, 06:37 PM
Yeah, no doubt it's for publicity. They're both pretty young guys who are really talented, but understanding the game is important. That takes years to learn. I want to see how well Hunt goes too, aside from a couple kicks I haven't seen much at all from him. I'm interested to see what position he plays as well. There's definitely some fault on the NRLs behalf, I think a lot of people agree the salary cap is far from efficient. Even before the Storm issue came up. If they want to keep their talent in the NRL they need some adjustments to it. The only people I can think of who have defected from the AFL are the couple guys who moved on to the NFL, but they were towards the end of their careers and are kickers.

yeah definately. everyones chasing the dollars these days though. i find it quite sad really, that club loyalty doesnt seem to be as high a priority as it should be.
those guys who have gone to the NFL have it easier to adjust i think. like you said, they're basically just kicking the ball. im guessing the nuances of the game probably dont concern them too much.

It would be nice to see more club loyalty. There would be nothing worse than seeing one of your favourite players move to a different team for money, let alone a different football code. Fortunately I can't think of any players from the Dogs who have done that. I believe Cooney, Griffen and Harbrow still haven't signed yet so anything could happen. The father-son rule is a pretty awesome concept. It's good to see that being used. Yeah, that's basically their only job. The ball is a bit different, but they were signed up because of how far they can kick alone. It also extends their career by a lot of years whereas they would of only had a couple more in the AFL.

i dont see any of those dogs players leaving. not with them challenging for the premiership. i would be shocked if they left.
i love the father-son rule. its that tradition and loyalty which makes footy clubs great places to be i think.
they probably make a bit more too. but definately would extend their playing career. aussie rules is a brutal sport

I'm hoping they don't. There's been talk of the Gold Coast team being interested in them, but I think they'll stay.
I had a look on wiki and Ben Graham got a six year contract worth $5.17M US when he started up. That's massive compared to what he would of gotten at the Cats. He was 31 when he was recruited too. I couldn't find Sav Rocca's contract, but he was 33.

They're targeting a lot of players from other clubs too so they're bound to get some. I'll laugh if they pick up Ablett.
Yep. It's crazy. So much money for doing so little.
i'll lose a lot of respect for ablett if he leaves geelong. but for sure, they'll pick a few up here and there. they've got heaps of draft concessions too which should help them a lot aswell

Living 20 minutes from Geelong I know a lot of people that go for them, which is why I'll laugh. It's not fun knowing someone who goes for them with their recent success. It'll take them down a notch or two if it happens. The next few years are going to be interesting with the draft. If you're a mediocre team it's not going to look pretty when they can't rely on early draft picks.
oh, i can imagine. they'd be all full of their own self importance.
yeah, the crappy teams are going to struggle for a few more years than they normally would. richmond might as well just fold now i think, its gonna be a long road back up to even a middle of the road team i think

Haha yep. It wasn't fun at all. The Saints were flooding for the majority of the game. They had no forward set up whatsoever. We really should have won. Harbrow played amazing, but he couldn't win it for us alone. Hall gave a stupid free kick as well which most likely would of been a goal and could of put the game away. There was a few chances to do it.

i turned it off at 3 quarter time and went to bed. io thought in a low scoring game, the three goal lead the bulldogs had would be enough to get them there. especially as they were playing well i thought. was dissapointed to see the result in saturdays paper when i got up.

Saints had a run on in the 3rd quarter, but couldn't kick straight so I thought they had a chance. When we were 3 goals up or whatever with less than 10 minutes to go though it looked like we had it. At least we've got Melbourne this week. We have to win since we're 3-3 and won't be in the 8 if we lose.
Port are sitting nicely at 4-2. It was good to see Bradshaw get some revenge too. He's been playing better than Fev.

i thought the dogs were holding back the saints pressure which is why i thought they had it. but i suppose you can never right off i quality side like the saints. yeah, its a must win game for you guys next week. though ive been impressed with melbourne, minus this week, so it could be a good game. but you guys definately need to bounce back to stay in touch.

I thought we played into their hand a little too much. It was terrible watching them kick the footy around for a few minutes each time the Saints had the back line flooded. It rarely led to anything either. I'm not sure what Melbourne will bring. They've been playing great, but then they lose to North.
Yeah it looks that way. They've been way more consistent than last year. Rodan is kicking ass.
Yep it was 6. Haha it was pretty sweet. I didn't watch the game because of thousands of assignments, but I saw it on the news. They've been the biggest surprise this year. They'll be tested this week against the Cats at Skilled.

Last year's Grand Final (first game and replay) were the first aussie rules games I've ever seen and now I can't wait for this season to start. Haven't really picked a team to support yet, thought about picking Collingwood because they had an American on the squad last season, but haven't made a decision yet.

To be fair, you did have a largely young and inexperienced side competing against relatively strong opposition. It's a shame about Fevola but I suppose he had so many chances to revitalize his career and didn't take them.
I'm looking forward to watching Essendon tonight, and thankfully that free kick - out of bounds rule has been scrapped.
