This may be the only time I say this, but I agree with mikeford here. He can have a Sox thread if he wants. I make threads about the Yankees all the time. And there's a mets thread somewhere around here, and they suck.

Actually, I apologize..you're allowed to have the thread if you want it. Who am I to tell you it's wrong. I'm not being a sarcastic dick either, I really mean it. After seeing Billy Wagner blow a save on Brian Bannister's surprise gem outing..I realized that the Mets are back to their sucky ways just two days into the season.

this forum is finally getting noticed and we are seeing the ill effects of that.

anyway, beckett has been sketchy tonight. he got out of sticky situations though and instead of getting down on himself, he looked siked up when he ended the 4th w/ that K.

Hopefully if they call upon Foulke, he can hold the lead. Otherwise, it won't even take until May 1st to have the majority of fans calling for Papelbon.

Beckett is out again for the 7th and nobody is in the pen. I don't think this is a bad move actually cause he's been on a roll lately. Hopefully he gets through this inning unscaffed and Timlin comes in the game for the 8th.

Loretta looks good again. 2 more hits ... here's my prediction: mark loretta will be the starting 2B in the All-Star game. I think he's due for a big year in front of Ortiz and Manny.

its a good move, if he gets through this inning fine and comes out for the 8th, i say start getting papelbon ready. I could definately see Loretta starting 2b at the all-star game, that would be great.

if they got a #1 pitcher in their lineup on the off season theyd have a real good starting rotation, kris benson isnt a good enough addition tho for my taste, I like rodrigo lopez, eric bedard and daniel cabrera though, hopefully leo mazzone can work some magic with the pitching staff this season and his name as pitching coach could bring in a good #1 and some bullpen help next offseason(thinking about it already since this season will be bust)

this is just a hypothetical .... but i wonder if there is room for him if Papelbon is the closer? Does Hansen come up and pitch middle relief? I think one of the vets (timlin, foulke, tavarez, seanez, riske) would have to tank for that to happen ..which is entirely possible.

papelbon aint gonna close all year. hansen will probably be given the chance in like august.

you think they'd pull papelbon if he had 25-30 saves in august? i don't.

Last year I said Pabelpon should close for a while. I still think he should, but with more innings. It would be a great way to keep him fresh while he waits for a spot in the rotation.

yeah, i think he should ultimately end up in the rotation ...but if he ends up being an elite closer, you can't touch him until he cools off or someone else steps up.

He needs to develop a couple more pitches, but he throws a hard fastball and is a bulldog on the mound. I think he ends up a #2, #3 top guy with the chance to be a #1. The scary thing is, Lester is supposed to be better.

yeah. he's been one of the top prospects (along w/ jon lester and hanley ramirez) in the system for a few years. he'll eventually be a starter, but right now he's closing cause there isnt room for him in the rotation and apparently they've lost faith in foulke.

yep ..i can't wait for lester. Once Wells and Schilling are gone, the average age of the sox staff will be about 26. i can't wait.

don't forget about delcarmen too ...you think they will try to make him a starter, or keep him in relief? I think he's got too much talent to just throw him in the pen in a non-closer role.

He came up later in the year for a couple starts and ended up as the set up man late in the season. He and Timlin made a nice 8 and 9 duo.

LWO, if MDC wants to be a starter he needs to harness his shit. I think he and Hansen would be sick in the pen. What's he doing in AAA?

this is just a hypothetical .... but i wonder if there is room for him if Papelbon is the closer? Does Hansen come up and pitch middle relief? I think one of the vets (timlin, foulke, tavarez, seanez, riske) would have to tank for that to happen ..which is entirely possible.

i envisioned hansen as the replacement for foulke but if paps has the job and is getting the job done they aren't gonna move him anywhere

I was thinking about that too. Papelbon is supposed to be the spot starter if someone gets hurt or needs to miss a start. If he becomes closer he wont be able to keep his innings up to do that. I suppose that Dinardo could be a spot starter. And with Hanson I suppose that he could take a set-up role if Papelbon is still closing effectively.

If Riske doesnt step it up, I think Delcarmen is probably next in line. I'm willing to bet that management wants Hansen to throw more innings in AAA before throwing him into the fire.

Delcarmen does need to get control of himself though, you are right. He's got such good stuff though.

Foulke seems to be handling the situation well.

“I don’t wake up in the morning and go to the grocery store and celebrate that I’m a closer. I’m a Boston Red Sox. I want to win a World Series. That’s all I’m here for… We’re working on stuff… the other day I felt better. I was lacking a little control… we’re just gonna keep building… I’m going to play the hand I’ve been dealt, just going to deal with it… I’m not going to put that much thought into it. I just bust my tail every day, keep improving… oh well.... [Francona told me] I could be throwing the ball better... could be throwing great. Do as you’re told… Team comes first. We've got to do what’s important for the team, not for me.”

That's great to see ...because I think he's realizing the majority of his teammates probably want Pap out there too. They showed Beckett talking in the dugout when Papelbon was pitching and he looked like he was blown away. I'm guessing thats the general consensus in the clubhouse.

Foulke has said since he got here that he didnt care if he was the closer or not, he just wants to help the team win. I'm hoping that Foulke can regain his confidence and his '04 form and becoming a quality pitcher. Whether it be as a closer, set-up man, or whatever.

anyway, I think Crisp could work really well in the 6 spot. You dont really need super speed at the top when you have Ortiz and Manny 3 and 4. Crisp is the 6 spot provides both power and speed so 7,8, and 9 can play "small ball." Crisp hits a double, 7 bunts him over, 8 and 9 have a chance to knock him in.
