View Full Version : If You Could Burn a Book, or an Author...

The literary quality of a text is not the only reason to recommend a book, though. Some texts should be read simply because they have been wildly influential or, for instance, because other texts make many references to them (the Bible comes to mind).
I strongly disagree with communism, but that wouldn't stop me from recommending the Communist Manifesto, or even go so far as to discourage someone from reading it.
Indeed. But that falls under the rubric of literary criticism as well. One can be aware of the shortcomings of style (Rand), or ideas (um, Rand again) and not necessarily discourage people from reading it but simply express one's opinion. Whether that would help people make up their mind is secondary. If I go on a rant against Stalin's useless collection of bombastic nothings or even imply that if I had them in my possession the thought of burning them on a cold winter eve would certainly not be far from my mind does not mean that I want to destroy them in their entirety. They are useful to historians at least, as an elucidation of what went wrong in the USSR in 1930s. In the same sense, i have read Mein Kampf to get the idea of what NOT to allow to happen agian, and how it can happen in a "civilized" country still. So yes, some use can be derived from all of them, even Rand :-d .
But not CS Lewis, or Alvin Plantinga.

No, since all are present throughout folk-tale and earlier fantasies of Morris, Dunsany, et al.

i think he's definately overrated in the land of ap, but maybe a little under-appreciated among the general populace.

Well, of course. And I have never said that I dislike Tolkien: I said that he was a genius hack, but the genius part lies mostly in details, the land and its languages and history rather than character development and plotting. And as a stylist he is unoriginal and almost dull, but solid, if you like that kind of medieval feel, which I do a lot.

i never meant to suggest that you dislike tolkien and i'll agree on the character development part, but disagree with your opinion on his plotting.
before tolkien almost no one considered fantasy characters for anything but fodder for silly one-dimensional childrens stories.

Sure, he did a great job popularizing the genre. But tehre were plenty others before him, and I am not talking about Robert Howard or any of the pulp writers (some of whom were quite awesome, however: Clark Ashton Smith, Fritz Leiber, C.L. Moore). High fantasy had quite a few people: Lord Dunsany, William Morris, Geroge Merritt, Hope Mirrlees. Nowadays they are considered to be classics, of course.

she justifies white/male/straight privilege.

Also I do not enjoy The Personist/his posts. He is the definition of a hipster and I cannot stand it when he posts. Although he does write fairly decent poetry, which was one thing keeping me from ignoring him. But even his writing skills cannot salvage the full-on fuckery that is everything else he writes. It's like he woke up one day, read Kirkegaard, learned the word "pretentious", and decided it to use it ironically and act it out every time he posts. Incredibly obnoxious.

Come Monday, I'll be around more frequently, though with more of a guilty conscience. It'll allow me to actively procrastinate instead of doing my work.
At any rate, I think it's stupid that I get accused of name dropping Kierkegaard and all this stuff. In fairness, the first two God threads featured some insanely long arguments with plenty of posts of substance. While I do wish I had time to rehash every argument I've ever made in previous threads, I don't have that luxury. The reason I get dismissive/just throw names out is because in all honesty, I've had the debate before and fleshed everything out. Furthermore, the people who are all like, "yeah, you're full of shit, fuck theology" seem to think that they can be dismissive of theology but I can't of whatever bullshit quips they dredge up to post and therefore conclusively prove that there are more glib atheists and agnostics than there are/were people of faith. The only people with whom debating anything has been remotely worthwhile are GeeBee, saysmydoctor, perceptrons, and vodyanoj (Dan hasn't been around for the past 2 threads) because I"ve actually learned something from the interchanges. If people want to flaunt their intelligence and be pithy about it, that's great. However, if they get to be pithy and I have to write them essays so they can then be pithy and tell me I'm wrong without actually addressing what's been said, then I won't indulge their arrogant curiosity. I guess because I know a few philosophers/theologians I like it makes me pretentious and unbearable, and I guess because I'm ironic sometimes it makes me a hipster and therefore unreadable, but whatever. If you wanna be smug about atheism, go for it. However, if you wanna discuss it, discuss it.
This is the wrong thread for most of that, though the right thread for the bit about my being arrogant/pretentious/obnoxious/Kierkegaard.
Also, fuck Sartre.

Huh? We've gone beyond Keynes by now, but, in fact, nothing he wrote has ever been debunked. We know now that his prescriptions are not universal, but work as long as certain conditions obtain. Like now. I am laughing my ass off at all the chicago-school wankers reinventing the Keynesian wheel recently; if only they'd spent some time studying his ideas, they would not be promoting primitive Keynesian concepts today.

Admittedly, I've learned about ABCT through Krugman so I might be mistaken but I remember his main contention with the theory was that since people spend less on investment goods during recessions, according to ABCT, they then have to spend more on consumption goods but that's obviously not the case. I should probably read about ABCT from the Austrians themselves though.

Death Watch by Jack Cavanaugh & Jerry Kuiper
I don't read many "Christian" Novels with the moral being about converting/being saved. They just bug me. So I should have looked into the author before I checked out the novel. However, that really wasn't the part of the book that bothered me. Cavanaugh does a really bad job of segueing from the climax into an appropriate ending. There are so many ideas running around your mind of what could be happening, and then he throws the lamest, most anticlimactic resolution out The characters are poorly developed as well.
Would not recommend; as per thread title, it should be burned.

no no it's cool, just saying. :stickout:
it's a great, haven't read it in forever. a lot of the ideas in the book are mindblowing, still today. but i'll let you read it.
and last i heard they were supposed to be making a movie out of it, but that's been in the works for years now.
anyways, if you love dystopian fiction, you'll love it.
I'll have to report back to you with what I think, then.

Last I heard Tom Hanks had considered or signed on for the film and then withdrew for some reason and they haven't done anything since then...that was two years ago.

Edgy as fuck.
Anyways, The Scarlett Letter. I despise that book. Thanks AP English 11!
I read that when I was 11, I thought it was okay. I mean I didnt have to read it for any class (in fact I never read any of my assigned books...ever) and if there was the pressure of reading a certain amount of chapters a day maybe I'd kind of resent it (and in reality I'd hide the book somewhere and forget about it)...but I liked it 7 years ago.
what was wrong with it?
Glenn beck.
Also, the random dude who wrote the bible, since it wasn't god, nor Jesus.

Hawthorne's style is too dry, and I thought the plot was dumb as shit.

seeing as how the whole plot of fahrenheit 451 is about burning books, i would assume that the guy's post was simply being ironic.
