I don't know why but I love watching depressing movies. I'm trying to find some to watch, something in the vein of The Last Kiss or Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind.. I don't know how to explain because I don't think everyone would find those depressing but I definitely do.. I guess Garden State would be in there too. I'm weird I know. Any suggestions?

Well for one, the entire premise itself is incredibly depressing. The Sun is dying. Combine that with the loneliness of being by yourself in deep space and boom, you got a depressing film.

No I didn't think it was one of the best movies of last year. I read why you didn't like it and I can see what you said about the actors and how they weren't likeable in the roles. I guess I could connect easier with them because I read the book a while ago and thought it was a fairly good adaption. While the book was much better the acting did a good job of reflecting the extreme drama and emptiness in their relationship.

I'm sure the book is far better, and I guess I can understand someone liking it if they read that, but honestly, I could never read the book because I just hated the story so much. Best movie of last year? Doubtful, I haven't seen every movie that came out. One of the better ones? Yes. I read you're anal analysis of this movie and alot of your criticisms seem petty. Maybe the fact that the emotional scenes had no impact on you are because you chose not to be affected. The performances were powerful, and yes, the female character came across as hollow because she was. Her dreams were unfulfilled, her marraige failed, and she was completely unhappy with her circumstances yet had no realistic means to escape them. The characters weren't supposed to be likable. I don't know if you were hoping for a movie about a failing marraige where both of the partners do everything right: it's failing for a reason. Both of the characters have very visible flaws and were not designed to be fallen in love with, which is what makes it relatable, but I guess you don't give a shit about bad shit, right!?
I didn't know you have to know the cause to understand the effect. Why is the history of their relationship so important? You saw two people trying to be happy and failing, I don't think I would've been any more impacted had I known where they met. The fact that you refuse to read what could be an amazing book because you dislike the adaptation of the movie only confirms my predictions about how narrow minded you are. The fact that you're willing to take shits all over this great movie when there are so many movies far more deserving of these harsh criticisms makes me sad.

The most depressing movie I've ever seen and probably will ever see is the documentary Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father. Don't read anything about it, just watch it and you are guaranteed to feel like shit afterward.
Very intrigued!

Why the hell would I read a book with a story I hate and characters I hate. It's virtually the same thing as reading a brief synopsis of a book in a library and deciding it's not for me, and that makes me narrow minded? Grow the fuck up. The film was Oscar baiting, self-indulgent trite that evoked no emotional response in me other than the fact that I found it painful to sit through. Get over it. I like how you're the one who said "my opinion was just flat out wrong" (it's just that, and opinion), and I'm the one who's narrow minded. I thought this was the worst movie I saw last year, you didn't. Whatever.
