Fiume
Address: 45th and Locust sts. http://www.philadelphiaweekly.com/old_pw_images/issue05.26.04/SG.neigh.Fiume-3-add.jpg
Time: 8:15 p.m. Vibe: Fiume is a makeshift hangout tucked into a small, dark room upstairs at Abyssinia, a neighborhood Ethiopian bar and restaurant. It's an in-the-know kind of place where West Philly's disaffected come to drink $1.50 PBRs and muse about how almost everything in the world has gone completely to shit. Once a week a bluegrass group sets up in the corner. As for decor, imagine an industrious hipster transforming his studio apartment into a tavern. There are a few tables thrown about, a five-seater bar and a fridge full of beer. Blue lights line the ceiling. Tapestries hang in the windows. A bookcase in the corner showcases such titles as Dissecting Antismokers' Brains and The Catholic Church and Nazi Germany. There are copies of the Defenestrator newspaper. Management is straightforward: A cardboard sign hanging above the bar reads, "The Bar is not responsible for the Sex you don't have." Another one instructs patrons, "If you want to get Fiume closed down just tag and vandalize our halls and bathroom." There's a statue of a wingnut.
