Try the Moon & Antarctica first, then The Lonesome Crowded West. Then which ever.

Nah man- "We Were Dead before the Ship Even Sank" is where you should start- then work your way down their discography.

Lonesome Crowded West, Long Drive, or Moon and Antarctica. Only options for just starting with them.

You are wrong. For many reasons.
A) The two new albums are far, far more accessible to new listeners- especially a 15 year old.
B) Any musician on the planet with ASSURE you that their two new albums are far better than their older stuff.

I would say start with This Is A Long Drive..... and also Lonesome Crowded West. Then Building Nothing followed by moon and antartica

Also, I am a musician.
Edit: Nevermind that Moon and Antarctica is both accessible and good.

Then from a musicianship standpoint, taking into account technical ability, dynamics, and overall song structure- there is no way you can possibly claim that they aren't "good".

I'll have to agree with Animal. Modest Mouse works much better in reverse. Go pick up Good News orWe Were Dead and go from there if you like those. And to the people who think Moon and Antarctica is more accessible than Lonesome Crowded West, you're out of your mind. Have you heard Tiny Cities Made Of Ashes?

i will agree with work your way down
start with, we were dead before the ship even sank. there are a couple of weak songs on there but you'll be able to pick them out easily. Dashboard, March into the Sea and Missed the Boat are personal favourite from that one
good news for people who like bad news is a brilliant album, contains float on and the world at large. Both songs you'd love. Bukowski and Satin in a Coffin are also favourite from there
the moon and antarctica is amazing but very trippy. 3rd Planet is a song you will love because everyone loves it. Same with Gravity Rides Everything and Perfect Disguise

I'm going to throw a curveball here.
Start with Building Nothing Out of Something. Its definitely their most accessible.
If you like that check out The Moon and Antarctica and then Good News
The Moon and Antartica is their most highly praised album by critics and fans alike
Oh- ok, I've changed my mind.

the moon and antartica.
it's amazing and when in doubt, start at, or near, the beginning of a band's discography.

Moon and Antarctica first for sure
Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks EP (personal fav)
Good News For People Who Like Bad News (like, seriously listen to it a few times, despite being their first "mainstream" release, it's really good)
No Ones First and Your Next EP
