Hello, everyone! I am a communication major writing a paper about emo audiences, and I was hoping you would be willing to participate in some reception analysis. The task is simple. I have listed below five sets of lyrics. Please email me at emopaper@hotmail.com with your name (which I will withhold in paper if you so request), gender, age, and your reaction to these lyrics. I am interested in knowing how they make you feel and what they make you think about. It is okay if you do not know the rest of the song; you only need to look at the few lines listed. Before I give you the lyrics, I would like to make a few things clear:
1. I know that many of you do not approve of the term "emo." Please for give me for using it; I can not write a paper about something with no name. Also, for the purpose of this study, the emo audience includes anyone who listens to bands that have been called "emo." These bands include but are not limited to: Saves the Day, Straylight Run, Something Corporate, Fall Out Boy, From Autumn to Ashes, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Dashboard Confessional, Armor for Sleep, Motion City Soundrack. If you do not fit under that definition of the emo audience, please do not respond.
2. My purpose in writing this paper is neither to condemn nor condone this music, so you do not have to worry about defending or destroying it or any particular band. Please just be honest.
3. It is very important that you email me your response. Please do NOT reply in this thread, as it could affect others' answers and invalidate my research. Once again, my email address is emopaper@hotmail.com. You are welcome to discuss here after I have turned in my paper in May, but until then, emails only PLEASE!
That's it! My sincerest thank you to anyone who takes a few minutes to participate. Here are the lyrics:
1. You've got a ringless finger / And I could go buy a ring right now / Well, actually I don't have any money / But that's okay / 'Cause I can figure it out
2. It would be alright / If we could see each other some time / If I could somehow make you mine / And if not I'll take my spoons / And dig out your blue eyes
3. Constantly / It's so hard to breathe / I can hardly see / Sense of smell's left me / And what's the point to hear / Unless it's her voice saying / "We can disappear"
4. I know that good things come to those who wait / But better things will come to those who don't give up
5. Wear me like a locket around your throat / I'll weigh you down / I'll watch you choke / You look so good in blue
