View Full Version : Music Forum Mixtape Exchange
Time to try this again. Music forum is at a new low right now. Chat threads and +1s rule the world, it's time for music discussion! So, some people probably remember the ones we did a year or so ago, good for you!
Rules:
*One Mixtape per person, duh.
*First 25 people to PM me saying they want to be in on this will get a place.
*Twice a week, starting Sept. 1, mixtapes will be posted and people will post reviews.
*All mixtapes must be uploaded to Mediafire (http://absolutepunk.net/mediafire.com).
*There is no length restrictions really, but keep it short. no one wants to spend an hour on a mixtape.
*No one under 500 posts can submit a mixtape.
*Registration closes on the 23rd.
*Be as brutal as you want when reviewing mixtapes.

Should the mixtapes contain songs from the same general genre of music? For example, I would be a little off-set listening to Joanna Newsom and Mastodon on the same thing, if you catch my drift.

Review of summer skin's mix:
Track 1: (will fill in later when I can hear it)
Track 2: Surprisingly, I like this song. And I'm not a fan of hip-hop.
Track 3: Also surprised I like this, cause I'm not a hardcore fan either.
Track 4: Did not like this one at all. Too much of an 80s feel to it.
Track 5: It was good, did not like those occasional chipmunk voices though.
Track 6: (will fill in later)
Track 7: A big fan of this band, so probably my favorite song on the mix.
Track 8: (again, will fill in later)
When I've heard all 8, I'll edit in an overall opinion.

Summerskin's mix
Track 1: This is loud. I hate to be closed minded or whatever, but this genre is really not my thing.
Track 2: I'm not a hip hop fan either, but at least this one doesn't have totally cliche/stupid lyrics and beat.
Track 3: This is solid. I don't listen to this genre too much, but when I do, I tend to enjoy it, especially the vocals.
Track 4: Another good tune. I can't really pin down what I like about it, but I like it.
Track 5: I like this hip hop song better than the other one on the mix, especially the cool warped vocals about 3/4 of the way through.
Track 6: Cool song. Especially the guitars.
Track 7: I've never heard an ATDI song I didn't like, and this is no exception. Maybe I should actually pick up some of the their albums.
Track 8: This is awesome. Far and away my favorite song on the mix. I've heard good things about this band, and now I can see why. They remind me of Mineral at times, which is sweet because I thought that genre was pretty dead.
Overall: Solid mix. The flow was great and I had only heard of two of the artists before listening. The first song just didn't quite seem to fit though.

Summer Skin's Mix
----------------------
Track 1 - I already listen to these guys. Love the new album. I think its my secnod favorite grindcore release this year, just behind Graf Orlock.
Track 2 - Been meaning to listen to this.. Joe Budden was one of my favorite "newer" rappers for a while, but kind of got tired of him. Song is alright but could've been better.
Track 3 - Decent song. It doesn't really stick out as anything I'd listen to often.
Track 4 - Sounds like... an annoying Jesus and Mary Chain knockoff.
Track 5 - I like the beat. The rappers not so much. Decent flows, but annoying voices and the lyrics are ignorable.
Track 6 - Sounds Like : Hipsters. But I actually like the song. Remind me of MGMT, if MGMT went for more of a vintage sound.
Track 7 - Well, considering this band is one of my favorite bands, no need to review this one haha.
Track 8 - I like this song. Never heard of this band. Somewhat reminds me of a Kinsella project, and you really can't go wrong with that. Will definitely be checking out their other stuff.

Track 1 - Already listen to these guys.
Track 2 - Kinda reminiscent of folk punk due to the vocals, but not folk punk... I can't really figure out if I like it or not. The little riff at about the two minute mark is awesome though.
Track 3 - I don't know if I like the song.. but I fucking love Gang vocals.
Track 4 - The first minute of the song made me think of the 80s... was waiting for the guy from m83 to start singing. I didnt realize the song was going to be instrumental until it ended. I did like it though and will download their stuff..
Track 5 - I expected this song to be instrumental, then the vocals started. Kind of remind me of a more scene oriented (and not as good) moving mountains..
Track 6 - This band has always bored me. I can't sit through their songs at all.
Track 7 - Same as #5.
Track 8 - I enjoyed this song a good deal. I really have a hard time hating almost any singer songwriter though... will be checking out his albums defintiely.

Track 1: I have a hard time attentively listening to post rock or whatever genre that is, but as background music, it's great.
Track 2: I see this dude's awesome shirts every year at Cornerstone, but this is the first time I've ever heard his music. I like it quite a bit.
Track 3: I agree with Jumpoff; the gang vocals are awesome. I will certainly check out more of this band.
Track 4: Another good instrumental song. I saw them play a few years ago. Solid band.
Track 5: My first reaction was, "this is very mewithoutYou," but then it kinda went all over the place. However, I really liked it.
Track 6: I love ACB, so listening to this just made me more sad that they broke up.
Track 7: I've seen these guys a couple times and they're always awesome. One of my favorite songs of theirs.
Track 8: I'm a big fan of all his projects, and this is no exception. Good closing track for the mix.

Right on. Happy you enjoyed a few of the tracks at least, although I'm a little surprised at your description of number 5. I'll have to check out Moving Mountains I guess.
Regards's Mix
You and I... we'd get along quite well.

Well, it reminded me of Moving Mountanis because it kind of had that "post rock with vocals" feel to it. And moving mountains does that really well in my opinion.

Track 1- Very relaxing song. I don't listen to too much music without lyrics, but this was nice.
Track 2- This was alright. I don't like the vocals/lyrics too much.
Track 3- I really liked the sound of the two singers' voices together. And the gang vocals made me chuckle.
Track 4- I also liked this instrumental song. And I agree with Jumpoff that it does sound very 80's-ish.
Track 5- I liked this for the most part, except for the vocals that were sung/screamed louder.
Track 6- I love As Cities Burn. Great song.
Track 7- I love this song.
Track 8- I enjoyed this song a lot.
Overall, I loved your mix. I liked almost every song.

This does seem to be the case. Have you ever been to Cornerstone Festival? Cause your mix certainly reads like the schedule to one of the Encore stages. Also, I'll join in on encouraging you to check out Moving Mountains. One of the most intense live bands I've seen.

Regards' mix:
1) Really good, flowing instrumental. Its really interesting and doesnt get boring or stale
2) The lyrics are really meh, but I like everything else. It kind of sounds like Bomb The Music Industry, to me.
3) Great. Gang vocals are spot on, lyrics harmonize really well. I like the overall feel of the songl. The girls voice is also really good. Thanks for this!
4) Good background music. Not much else to it, for me.
5) Like said above, it sounds really like mewithoutYou. I love mewithoutYou, so I obviously like this. The piano is good, I like being able to hear the bass, the yelled/screamed vocals are nice, guitars flow nicely, overall its a good song. It starts to get stale towards the end, but ends at the appropriate time.
6) I love As Cities Burn, but some songs from Come Now Sleep are a bit boring. This one is no exception as it starts slow and clocks in at almost 6 minutes long. They are great at slowly building up a song though.
7) The clean vocals at the beginning of the song are good, but the it slowly deteriorates. Overall its just ok. Towards the end it drags.
8) Decent song, good length, and good vocals. May be checking more out by him
Overall, the mix was good. There are 3 or 4 artists I will be checking out. Thanks!
I'm going to upload mine in a few hours, but before i do, i might trim a few songs off it.
Also, downloading these two now. Can't wait to hear them :-)

Separate link to track one next to the main link :-)
Summer Skin's Mix
Track 1 - Good idea to have a grind song as the lead in track. Taking the listener by surprise right out of the gate. I'm not massively into grind (though i kinda want to check these guys out now), but this works really well as an intro track.
Track 2 - Haven't checked him out yet (i've been getting a lot of recs to though), but i like what i hear from this song. Not too into the sound of the synth though. It gets a bit grating for me. But overall, pretty good.
Track 3 - I like this. The singer does that whole speaking/yelling style pretty well. Reminds me of early At The Drive-In, but with slightly deeper and screamier vocals.
Track 4 - Catchy. A little pretentious sounding. Vocal effect is annoying as shit. Remained in my head after i listened to it though. If these guys have stuff without shitty vocal effects, i'm interested in hearing more of their stuff.
Track 5 - Nice beat and nice use of samples. I like the scratching. You don't hear enough scratching in hip-hop these days, haha. Their voices might take a bit of getting used to, but i could see myself warming to them for sure. A nice piece of old school hip-hop.
Track 6 - I don't hate it... but i wouldn't willingly play it though. If it came on the radio, or a friend was playing it, i'd enjoy it enough i guess.
Track 7 - Fuck yes. Acrobatic Tenement is my fave ATD-I album (i know, i know). Fantastic song. i love the youthful enthusiasm, intensity and emotion.
Track 8 - I'm a huge Empire! Empire! fan. When i saw this song was in the mix, i yelped embarrassingly with joy. Beautiful, honest music, without any cheesy, pretentious, gimmicky bullshit.
Overall, i really enjoyed this mix. Thank you for sharing it.
Regards' Mix
Track 1 - Already a fan of these guys. Great song. They make beautiful instrumental music. Enough said.
Track 2 - Overall, i like it. At times there's a hell of a lot going on, which i think detracts a little from the song. But i'll definitely check out his other stuff now.
Track 3 - Pretty fun sounding. I love the gang vocals and male/female harmonies. Missing a certain something i can't put my finger on. But still, i'm really digging this. I'd love to hear how they progress on future releases.
Track 4 - I'm a huge fan of this band. Got into them through EITS comparisons, and downloaded a shit ton of their stuff from iTunes. Really great instrumental post rock, with their own little twist.
Track 5 - I'm not going to lie. I like xylophones. A lot. This is pretty interesting. I don't like the chorus at all, but i think the verses sound pretty cool. I'm a little torn over this song. I guess it is better than a lot of stuff going around these days though. But yeah, i'm still on the fence about this one.
Track 6 - I really dislike this band. I'm not a fan of the over-emoting vocals. Sorry. They even make a big emotional climax sound boring, somehow.
Track 7 - I don't hate it. But i don't love it. There are some cool guitar parts and drum parts. There are also some guitar and drum parts that i'm not a fan of. I'd happily sit through it if i had to, but wouldn't willingly put it on.
Track 8 - I like his vocal style. Inoffensive, and pretty endearing. Love the horns to. They add quite a nice touch. Same with the ghostly backing vocals. It's stuff like this that elevate this above your ordinary pop-rock singer songwriter style stuff. I'll be checking out his other music for sure. A nice, pleasant way to end the mix.
Overall, i like this mix. Definitely more good stuff than bad on it.

summer skin's mix:
1: Nice way to start the mix. I've always been meaning to check this band out so it's cool that it was included here. Although I wasn't a huge fan, I enjoyed it. I'll be checking out more from them soon though.
2: I don't listen to much rap but this is sweet. I'm not sure what else to say about it, I just enjoyed it. Not sure if I'll check out more from them in the future or not, but I did really like this. So it's quite possible.
3: This was pretty awesome. Had never listened to them before this but I'll check out more for sure. This was my favorite song from the mix.
4: I like this. Not the kind of thing I usually listen to but I liked this quite a bit. It reminds me of someone else I've listened to before, I just can't place it at the moment.
5: I liked this one more than the other rap song on the mix. Could see myself looking into more from them in the future.
6: Not really my thing. It's far from a bad song, and in fact I liked it a little bit, but I doubt I'll listen to it much again after this.
7: Already listen to them, but a good inclusion nonetheless.
8: Good stuff. But again, not something I'm huge on, so it's doubtful that I'll check out more in the future. Nice way to close the mix though, and an overall enjoyable song.
Regards' mix:
1: This is a band I have always meant to check out based on them being recommended by a lot of people. So thanks for putting this here, ha. I really liked it. Will be checking out more sometime.
2: Micah recommended that I check this guy out a while back and I kept forgetting about it. So again, thanks for putting this on here too haha. Liked it quite a bit.
3: Wasn't really feeling this one. Music is great but I wasn't a fan of the vocals too much. They're good, it's just something about them...it just sort of bothered me a bit. Not to the point where it made the song unenjoyable or anything though.
4: This is interesting. Not something I listen too, but I really enjoyed this. I'll probably check out more of theirs before long. I don't know how much staying power it'll ultimately have for me, but I'll definitely give it a shot.
5: I liked this. One of those bands that people have recommended to me before in the past and I just sort of forgot about ever listening to. Good song though, and I'm interested to hear more.
6: Already like this band, so good call. I haven't listened to them much lately so it was nice hearing this on here. Good choice.
7: Not sure how I feel about this one. It wasn't bad, but it didn't do much for me and I got sort of bored while listening to it.
8: Weird, I cannot stand this guy's band at all, and based on that, never bothered checking out his solo stuff but this wasn't half bad. I don't think I'll be checking out more of his solo material but this is a pretty enjoyable song all in all.
If we do another one of these, I'll take part. Unless your "registration closes on the 23rd" rule isn't in effect anymore.

3. this track was awesome. made me want to jump around my room and break things. maybe beat a girl or two, in a daryl palumbo-esque fashion. vocals remind me of TDF.

Track One: Really great song, but I really have to be in the mood for long instrumental songs like that. Luckily, at this point in time, I was.
Track Two: The pairing of vocals was really cool. I liked the feel to this song.
Track Three: When I listened to it through the mix I didn't really care for it. But I went back to it and I'm liking it more with each listen. Enjoyable gang vocals. As was said many times.
Track Four: I don't think I really feel the 80's reference a lot of reviewers mentioned. I get what they mean, but it sounded pretty modern to me. Anyway, I really enjoyed the track. I never got bored and I didn't feel like it was going to end anytime soon, which is a good thing with instrumental tracks.
Track Five: I liked it, but don't think I have any particular interest in this band.
Track Six: I've heard good things about As Cities Burn, but never actually checked them out. I will be looking up more stuff. Love his vocals.
Track Seven: I liked it starting off, but got really bored with it by the 3rd minute mark.
Track Eight: Excellent. I love a good singer/songwriter. It was a really unexpected ending to this mix and I thought it wrapped it up in a strangely great way.
Overall: I liked almost every track on the mix. I think personally, when I listen to and make mixes I like a little more variety. Which is probably why I enjoyed the last song so much. But still, it flowed nicely and it took me til the seventh track to get bored with the same kind of style through each track. And that's impressive.

caityconundrum's mix:
1: I like this. I think I've listened to this song (or at least this artist) before on a Facebook link you posted. Nice voice, good guitar work.
2: Great original song, and a sweet cover. Not much else to say, ha.
3: Love this band, but I think there's better songs you could've gone with. Mostly because I think Let Me Come Home is a considerably better album than Hi, Everything's Great. They're both good though so it doesn't really matter. I'm actually kind of surprised to see that you're a fan, Caity, haha.
4: Eh. It's not my thing. It's a decent song but I doubt I'll listen to more of this band at any point.
5: This is okay, but again, it's not something I'm that stoked on, all in all.
6: I liked it. There's not much about it that really inspires me to check out more from them right now, but maybe the more I listen to it, the more it'll grow on me.
7: I never was that fond of these guys. Not bad, not great, just sort of 'there' for me.
8: Great choice. I'm already a fan of this guy/his band/his music so there's not much else to say.
9: Meh. My mom used to listen to this dude all the time and I never really enjoyed it. He's got a nice voice but his music just doesn't do anything for me at all, personally.
10: Same as above, minus the "my mom listens to him" part, ha. Good voice, but this song didn't do much for me, or inspire me to want to hear more.
11: Not a big fan. I just got kind of bored while listening to this. Sorry.
12: Pretty cool cover. The original song is great, and this is a solid rendition, even though it's brief. Nice way to close the mix.
Jumpoff's mix:
1: I've heard so many good things about this band, so I'm glad this was here for me to finally check out. I liked it. Beautiful music, and I'll be checking out more from them soon. I can't see it being something I'll listen to regularly, only if I'm in the right mood. But still, quite liked it.
2: Well, I'm already a fan and already had this song/EP but still, a great inclusion haha. Really stoked to see where these guys go from here on out.
3: Rad. Not super impressed with it but this sounds like something I'd enjoy so I'll probably check out more. Reminds me of the Menzingers, to be honest haha.
4: Not for me. Sorry.
5: Solid, but I doubt I'll go back to it again, at least not often. It's just not for me either, I guess.
6: Another band I'm already a fan of, but a good choice nonetheless.
7: I liked this. Felt a little bit slow to really get going, and I think it might've went on for a little too long. It really gets good towards the last minute and a half or so.
8: Interesting, but it didn't hold my attention for long.
9: This is another band I've been meaning to pay more attention to lately. I liked it.

Caity's:
Numero Uno: I love this movie. I love this song. Stoked to have it as a part of my Itunes collection.
Numero Dos: It was alright. Original was better... Wasn't majorly impressed
Numero Tres: I like it. Cool sound. Haven't got much else to say...
Numero Quatro: I thought I loved that original track way to much to appreciate any cover, but I actually really liked it. I thought the vocals on it were really interesting to hear when you're used to Dan Nigro's voice.
Numero Cinquo: And IIIIIIII'lllllll beeeeee Your crying in shoulder! Sorry, I couldn't get over it was him. Song wasn't bad, just couldn't overcome that song.
Numero Seis: I loved that song. Like I wanna listen to it over and over. But I'll probably just check out more from him instead. Perhaps both...
Numero Siete: Catchy. I really liked him voice on the verses.
Numero Ocho: First off I love the way that flowed from the last track. I've always meant to check these guys out. They certainly live up to their name. It was a good song. I loved the female vocals on the track. Just overall a very enjoyable song.
Numero Nueve: Found it kind of boring.
Numero Diez: I saw these guys at Warped Tour a couple years ago and they definitely did not play this song. They kind of sucked actually. But I wouldn't know it from this track
Numero... Eleven: Love this guys voice. Songs a little long but I like the way it picks up in the last two minutes. I have a feeling I'd really like other things by him though. Also question, in the beginning he says that this song is one of his favorites, does that mean it's a cover? Or does he really just like his own songs?
Numero Twelve: Good song. I think the last one would have been a better ending track. But that's just me...

I need to check out more Limbeck. I've got a handful of albums on my ipod, but only a live version of Hi, Everything's Great on my computer right now. I finally got to see them last week with fun. (they're from OC so I'm kicking myself for not having seen them sooner)
You should def check out fun.'s new cd. That was the first single off it, but the whole thing is wonnnnderful imo.
Takota on Warped? You sure about that? I know Pistolita played a few dates but I didn't think Takota had. The Takota song I put on is actually like three years old now and I'm hoping their new stuff will make an appearance soon and wow everyone.
Eleven is Dustin Kensrue covering a Counting Crows song. :) I actually had a different last song picked out but I never got around to editing it properly. I don't even like the way I ended this mix ahahh.

Will do for sure
I thought so, but I fact checked and they never played Warped. Now I don't know where I saw them, but I know for sure I saw them play Ivory Tower live and thought it sounded awful. Which I do have on my Itunes for some reason and like the recorded version better.

Aww I'm kinda sad to hear that haha. I've been seeing them play and grow for a few years now and they've changed A LOT. The took the new songs off their myspace, but if you wanna hear any of the more recent stuff, just let me know and I'll get together a little sample for you. I love those guys.

I liked it.
Glad you liked some of the stuff on here man! When it comes to Track 1, most of their stuff has more vocals than that song. On track 3, they are from the same area as the menzingers (and me).. check out their new EP, Spirit Desire, they sound nothing like them anymore haha.

Of course, haha. I was expecting to like quite a bit of it, and I did, there were just those few tracks that didn't do it for me. I'll definitely look into that EP though.

i'm going to download all 4 mixtapes tonight and give them all a listen. i'm excited.
Jumpoff's Mix
Track 1 - Absolutely beautiful. A great way to start the mix. I'm a huge fan, and got into them through BoH, but ended up liking these guys a little more. Great song.
Track 2 - Love it. Huge fan of these guys. They know their way around a catchy riff, and a rousing chorus. Great honest rock music.
Track 3 - Never heard of these guys, but i like what i hear. A nice laid back atmosphere to this song. They have a great pop sensibility. I'll definitely be checking out more of their stuff.
Track 4 - I got excited when i saw this song was on here :-d Love love love this band and all they do. Great song. "Ain't such a baaaaaad gig!" Love it!
Track 5 - Oh man, i absolutely love this band. There have been quite a few amazing bands coming out of Scotland lately (The Twilight Sad and We Were Promised Jetpacks come to mind) I love this album to bits!! It's the kind of song you listen to, and have to listen to again right away.
Track 6 - I've only heard a few of these guys songs, but i like what i've heard. I'll have to check out more. Gang vocals on this are great!
Track 7 - I got into these guys a couple of years ago after seeing a thread on here actually, haha. I think it was Bob that made it maybe? Can't remember, but i got this album right away. Fantastic song. So much emotion. If only i knew what the words were :-p
Track 8 - Haven't heard of these guys. Awesome instrumentation at the start! Vocals take you by surprise! In a good way. I really like this! Will definitely be checking out more.
Track 9 - I'm a huge Pedro fan. Great, great song, and a really nice way to end the mix.
Overall, i just creamed my pants. Twice. Amazing mix.

Summer Skin's
1. Not really like anything I listen to, was interesting and I have a friend who would probably really enjoy it, not sure how I feel about it though.
2. Not a big hip hop/rap person and definitely wouldn't consider myself and expert but this didn't really stand out to me.
3. Really enjoyed this one, made me want to listen to more.
4. Already familiar with/enjoy them. This song gets stuck in my head so easily.
5. Definitely enjoyed this rap song more than the other one, might check them out.
6. Possibly my favorite song on the mix that I didn't already know.
7. Can't really go wrong with this band.
8. Was okay, didn't really stand out.
Overall: Pretty good, two bands I was already familiar with, and a few things to check out. My favorite of the mixes so far in terms of artists I haven't heard previously.
Regard's
1. Heard of the band, I not really a post rock person, it kept me interested throughtout, but didn't make me want to listen to more.
2. Enjoyed it but seemed like one of those artists I would listen to once and never really return to.
3. Really catchy, will probably look into more, favorite on the mix.
4. Wasn't bad just didn't really enjoy it.
5. Same as number 4
6. Found it to be pretty boring.
7. was just okay
8. Didn't really do anything for me.
Overall: I enjoyed Battle Creek
Jumpoff's
1. Just recently got into this band after seeing them mentioned a few times around here. Love it already.
2. Enjoyable but the vocals didn't do much for me.
3. Already familiar with them, great choice.
4. Two thumbs up for the Dismemberment Plan.
5. Didn't like it, really disliked the vocals.
6. Didn't enjoy but it didn't dislike it
7. Liked and added to a list of bands I have to check out.
8. Added to that same list because it interested me, but wasn't entirely to sure how I felt about it.
9. A bit bored with this one.
Overall: 3 bands I enjoy, two to check out, so pretty good.
caityconundrum's
1. was just okay, a bit underwhelming
2. I'm a sucker for female vocals, really enjoyed this even with the sound quality
3. good but not great
4. was okay, felt maybe the quality was holding it back a bit
5. Didn't care for it
6. pretty good but once again not great
7. most enjoyable one so far besides number 2, but still not blown away.
8. this song was a very fun listen, I heard a few format songs once and enjoyed them but didn't really look too much into it. I might have to give them and fun a try.
9. didn't enjoy this but wasn't horrible
10. underwhelming
11. underwhelming
12. mildly enjoyable but didn't inspire me to check out more.
Overall: I should probably say I'm not much of a singer/songwriter person which a lot of this mix seemed to be, so I can't really say I enjoyed it much. I did like the fun song though.

Jumpoff's Mix
....
I'm glad you enjoyed it man! :-d Track 2/Track 3 are both local bands and I love them both. And yeahhh I love all those bands from Scotland! They just have one hell of a scene going on right now. Bob is probably most likely to have started Track 7's thread, but I didn't see that one.... I wish I could sing along too. They sound so much... "catchier" than most screamo bands.
I wish Pedro would get more love on here... so much better than most of the scene's current bands. Have you heard the new David Bazan album? Really good stuff. I think its one of my favorites from this year. If you like Pedro that much you should also check out Worker Bee (http://www.myspace.com/workerbeebuzz)... lead singer has kind of a Bazan-like voice.
If you can't find links to anything you want just ask and you shall receive.

For Track 2, maybe check out some of their other stuff. That song isn't their best vocal I just figured it would be a good introduction. If you're already familiar with track 3 I'm surprised you're not with track 2... seeing as track 3 usually opens for 2 when they are playing hometown shows together.

Definitely will do, thanks for the suggestion, and the only reason I'm familiar with 3 is because I've seen them mentioned around here and checked them out. I've also seen 2 mentioned before just never really paid attention. I don't really get out to many shows or really pay attention to who plays with who because not much I'm interested in comes through where I live, plus I'm a little far away to get to one of their hometown shows.

Oh good point didn't look at where you are from. Just not used to Tiger's Jaw havign any kind of following because barely anyone even goes to their shows here and they are local haha. They generally get like... half the crowd the menzingers get in the same venue.

Question:
Are these mixtapes supposed to be themed or can they be a mixed bag of tricks?
It's up to the compiler as to whether they want to make a themed one. I think most of these aren't. Mine isn't. But i tried to make mine flow well, as i'm sure all the others did. Not just throwing a bunch of songs up in any order.

Caity's Mix
Track 1 - I've been meaning to see this film. Song sounds great! Reminds me of Cat Stevens. Very nice
Track 2 - Such a beautiful cover. I'm a sucker for female solo piano stuff, and this is top grade.
Track 3 - I like the deep backing vocals. They compliment his voice nicely. The slow stomping bass drum adds a great atmosphere. I really like this.
Track 4 - I like this better than the original. The dual vocals sound really nice. She plays shows in Australia all the time. I might so and see one now.
Track 5 - The only song from him i've heard is 'I'll Be', which i'm not too keen on. This is okay though. He has a nice voice.
Track 6 - Nice American folk music. I like the strumming pattern. Nice and relaxing.
Track 7 - I love this band, haha. This is a great song. This reworking is really cool. I didn't even know about this version of the album until last year sometime, and now i listen to it just as much as the original. Very cool indeed.
Track 8 - This is how modern pop music should sound. Not the shit your hear on the radio. Such a happy, catchy and fun song. I've been addicted to this album lately. Glad you put this on the mix.
Track 9 - I heard about these guys from when they toured with STD, but never really checked them out. It's not bad sounding, just not what i normally listen to i guess. Definitely not as bad as the bands they most probably get lumped in with though.
Track 10 - Not really a fan of his voice. It's a little awkward. Not to into this one. A little too "cheesy ballad" once the full band enters. Would sound good in a pivotal monemt in Grey's Anatomy.
Track 11 - Nice cover. I'm not hugely into Thrice, but i really liked his solo album. I like his slight changes to parts of the melody. You can tell he genuinely loves the song.
Track 12 - I remember this band. I liked a couple of their songs a while back. Not too into this now, but the nostalgia is nice. It's always nice to leave a mix with a smile on your face.
Overall, pretty nice!! Everyone needs a nice relaxing, chill mix. It'd be a great sleep mix.

My dad said the same thing about Glen Hansard sounding like Cat Stevens haha. :) I think you're the first person to like the Jesse Shannon track too. That was like the first song he put online, but if you or anyone else wants to check out more of his stuff, it's right over here (http://myspace.com/jessemshannon).

I can't speak for everyone but personally, I'd be a lot more interested in downloading someone's mix if I saw the tracklisting first. My whole reason of taking the time and grabbing it would be because "i haven't heard of any of these bands". I mean, you guys can do whatever you like but that's just my suggestion

when mine gets posted, i will put up the track list...
Personally, i'd rather not know what's on them. More of a surprise that way. But i get the point if someone has slow internet. Maybe include a seperate text file of the tracklist, and the link can be put next to the mix link on the first page. That way, the people who want to see what's on it can download that before they download the mix, and the people that want a surprise won't be seeing the tracklists while reading the thread.

i like that idea, or else the person who really needs the tracklist, can just PM the user who made the mixtape and ask for it. i'd be much more willing to do that. i want people to download my mix, but i want people to go into it blind, ya know?

caityconundrum's mix
1. Loved this movie so much, and have had the soundtrack since fall 2007. This is one of my favorite songs from the film, and I love it as the opener for the mix. Such a great, emotional song.
2. Like the voice, and think it's a good cover. Not sure about having it as track two, but it's decent.
3. Good, not great. I wasn't a big fan of the guy's voice, but the song itself was alright. I think I'd enjoy it a lot more if the quality was better.
4. Beautiful song. Again, I'd love to hear a higher quality version. Will check out the original.
5. I like his voice a lot. Not my favorite song, but pretty good.
6. I really like this one a lot too.
7. This one is just ok for me. Not a big fan of the voice, but the song works well as a lead in for the fun. track.
8. Not my favorite on the album, but it's catchy as hell and works well next to the previous track. Reminds me I need to listen to this album more.
9. Like the piano intro a lot, and the song is catchy. Not my favorite on here, but pretty good.
10. Enjoyed this one a lot. Interesting voice that at times reminds me a bit of Jesse Malin. Gang vocals at the end are totally unexpected and awesome.
11. The original is probably one of my favorite songs, and I'm not sure how I feel about this cover. Not really sure his voice suits the song that well. Still a decent cover though, I've just heard the original so many times that anything else sounds a little weird.
12. This one is just ok for me. Might be my least favorite on the mix though, and I don't think it's a great closer.
Overall: Despite some flow problems, its a decent mix that covers mostly singer/songwriter material. A few things I'll definitely be checking out though.

Jumpoff's mix
1. Loved this. Great as an opener.
2. To be honest, it's verging on unlistenable for me due to the vocals. Just not my kind of thing.
3. Not great, but better than the last track. Goes on for a little longer than I think it needs to.
4. Not for me.
5. Might be my favorite on the mix. Enjoyed this one a lot.
6. Actually caused me pain. Again, not my thing.
7. See above, only to a much lesser extent.
8. It's fairly obvious by now that I really dislike screaming vocals, so this was another skip for me.
9. A good closing track.
Overall: Most of it was really not my cup of tea, but there were a few songs in there I enjoyed. My favorite was either the first or the fifth track.

Summerskin's didn't work. :(
Regard's mixtape:
1) This sound just doesn't pique my interest or attract my attention in any significant way. Explosions In The Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Pelican have all written songs twice as long as this one or longer that have held my attention better. Coulda been better.
2) Never heard of this guy before, and I'm regretting that fact. This song really curiously combined elements of punk rock, folk, and the goofy sporadic lo-fi stylings of Titus Andronicus, all while doing the best job I've heard of convincing us those parts belong to one sensible whole. Definitely going to look up more from him.
3) Meh. Not really my cup of tea. It's too fast paced and mixes too many different, divergent styles to really give a cohesive whole for me to sink my teeth into. The gang vocals don't really fit in with what's happening with the rest of the song, the male/female duet would have been better served with a slower BPM, and the drums make the entire song sound like one elongated breakdown.
4) Again, meh. I don't really 'get' the whole random synthesizer thing that just plops down out of nowhere a minute into the song. Not that I would have had a problem with synthesizers coming in at that point, as the rest of instruments sound eerily New Order-ish (with maybe a dash of Broken Social Scene?), but I had a problem with that synthesizer using that effect coming in. I don't know, when the music builds a little more towards the 2 minute mark I like when the synthesizer comes in then, so I don't know, I might just being nitpicky. At any rate, I loved the drumming on this song to death. He did a superb job.
5) Sorry, but I really did not like this song. Circa Survive did it better at various points on Juturna and On Letting Go, with Green sounding more emotional and less melodramatic, the guitars sounding sharper and more immediate and less washed out and drone-y, the drums sounding more natural and organic (I guess?), and doing this song in less than the five minutes this band took. Then again, I really don't like Circa Survive that much anyways, so they were kind of fucked from the beginning.
6) Another track I did not like. It sounded like some weird clusterfuck of Mewithoutyou, an emo band I can't seem to put my finger on, and A Fine Frenzy. It's weird how you've gone from a more indie esthetic with the first 3 or 4 tracks to a more scene one on these last few.
7) I haven't ever really listened to As Cities Burn, and it seems like I'm finally realizing what I was missing out on. I mean, this is still only a good song, but I could certainly see myself getting into their music. I don't know, I like this song and thing that, on paper, it is really well done, but there just seems to be something missing to put it over the hump. Maybe a different drum fill, or a more funky, upfront part for the bass, perhaps? I just feel like it needs a slight tweak to put it into fantastic territory.
8) First of all, this song steals the guitar progression from "Instrumental II" on The Microphones' The Glow Pt. 2, so unoriginal song is unoriginal, but beyond that, I really didn't like it. It's okay, but it's not that interesting or captivating, and it just seems over the top corny. Sars, but that's the way I feel about it.
Jumpoff's mixtape:
1) Can we be BFF's? I don't know anyone else that likes Dismemberment Plan. Kudos on the choice, this track and Emergency &I in general are fantastic.
2) Just a big fat Meh. I feel like if you've heard one song like this you've heard every song like this, and there are many more songs like this than you'd expect. Just a disappointingly bland choice.
3) :thumbs up: Frightened Rabbit is always on or not far off of my "Recently Played" iTunes playlist. Solid choice.
4) I like it, it just seems like a weird choice (pun intended). A 2 minute instrumental track right in the middle of a mixtape? I guess, if that's your thing. I just don't think it fits.
5) Ugh. This track is just dripping with melodrama. I found nothing positive to take away from it. Woof on this pick.
6) Punk that isn't from the late 70's/early 80's, and that features only three chord progressions? You're losing me.
7) Ditto. Sorry, angst just isn't my thing.
8) I see a pattern developing...
9) Nice touch with Pedro the Lion. Sure, there's a number of folk acts I would rather hear over them, but I'll take what I can get. All in all this was a very strange, schizophrenic mixtape combining the explosive and angry with the subtle and delicate. I'm going to assume you're moving out of the former and into the latter as you are maturing, as I've never seen it done the opposite way, and I'm sure if you were asked to do a mixtape again a year from now it would look very different, so I can't be too harsh in my criticism of you. Also, you included Dismemberment Plan, that's worth at least 1000 cred points.
caityconundrum's mixtape
A big heaping serving of not my thing. Not particularly bad in any way, I just don't really like it. I liked fun. quite a bit, as the vocalist and their arrangements sound like a more spunky, younger version of Destroyer, but still, meh.

Hey man you mixed up the order somehow I think (i THINK i put the tracks in the right order, not sure how they got mixed up for only you). Carissa's Wierd is supposed to be track 1. Wasn't meant to be in the middle of the mixtape, which is why it sounds out ofplace there haha.
Dismemberment plan is awesome. I also just love all the newer Scottish bands I've heard I think... WWPJ, Twilight Sad, and Frightened Rabbit especially.
Thanks for listening to the mixtape! I'm actually moving in the opposite direction. i've always liked the quieter music, but I recently started getting into the more "screamo" type stuff, though I don't see it becoming what I listen to most anytime soon..

They might be awesome, but I doubt anyone is going to listen to an hour+ of music for this thread. Barely anyone is even listening to most of the ~30min mixes! Will check it out... if it ever finishes downloading. Other downside of 80mb haha.

Murrich:
1: I respect this band, but I've never been a huge fan personally. I tried to get into them before and it just didn't do a whole lot for me. Good song, though and an objectively good band all in all, I'm just not that interested, I guess.
2: This is fucking awesome. I love this kind of thing, haha. I'll definitely be checking out more from this guy.
3: Already enjoy this band/song, but good call nonetheless.
4: This is pretty cool. I don't know if it's something I'll be exploring more of in the future, but it's possible. Song was a bit long for me, I felt like it should've ended earlier than it did.
5: Band is rad. I've always liked The Replacements far more when it comes to those two (since they're always lumped together) but still, good band, good song. I think I like New Day Rising more, personally.
6: Eh, I have never been able to get into this guy's music at all. It's just not for me I guess. Not terrible, or unlistenable, just doesn't capture my interest.
7: I like this band but I don't listen often. This song was new to me, and I liked it quite a bit. The self-titled is an album I have yet to check out so I'll do that sometime.
8: I'm a fan of his music already, but I feel like this was sort of an odd song to include on the mix, especially if the intent is to get other people into the artist in question. Really inaccessible tune, imo but it's still cool. I would've gone with something a little easier to get into though, like "Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles", or what have you.
Sweet mix overall. Found some stuff on here I'll be checking out more of. I enjoyed it!
bradsonemanband:
1: I liked it. Not the kind of thing I listen to regularly but this is an enjoyable song, so I'm interested to hear what the rest of the album this song is from is like.
2: I like the mellow vibe of this. It's not quite my thing though so it's doubtful I'll check out more from them.
3: Really enjoyed this. I had a few Busdriver songs already, but this is by far the best thing I've heard from him. Awesome stuff.
4: Good stuff. I've been meaning to give this band a shot sometime, so I'm glad this was on here. I'm intrigued, and plan to further explore their work sometime.
5: File wouldn't open for me. So no comment here, ha.
6: Beautiful piano, not sure if I like the vocals or not though. They're not bad, they just don't sit well with me, I guess. But with more listens, I'll probably warm up to them.
7: Eh, doesn't do much for me.
8: I liked it. Stars is another band I've been meaning to check out, and this was cool.
9: Wasn't a fan of this. Sorry.
10: Already a fan, but great choice of song. One of my favorite Kinsella tunes.
11: Hmm. Not bad, not great, this is just sort of "there" for me. I liked it for the most part though.
12: Fun song, haha. I'm not sure if it's something I'll be looking into past this one song but I might.
13: Catchy, but not quite my thing.
14: Mildly enjoyable at first, but as the song went on I got bored. I dunno. It's not like it's too long or anything, at just 3 minutes but still, something about it felt like it was dragging a bit. Not really a fan of this kind of metalcore at all though.
15: Really cool. I don't usually listen to this sort of thing but I definitely enjoyed this. Planning on giving the album this is from a shot.
16: Sweet way to close out the mix. Quite liked this, and I think I'll be exploring more of this guy's work as well.
I liked this mix. Bit too long, I think haha but that's not a problem, really. Found some good stuff on here to check out in the future.
Track 5 isn't working Brad :-(
Also, i agree about the length. An hour is fine for a mix, but when you want people to sit and type up little reviews for each track, it's a little different. That being said, i will still write reviews for this, since a) it's fun to do, and b) i'm a fan of some of the bands you've chosen.

TRACK 5:
http://www.mediafire.com/?mgqnnt0gnjy
Bradsonemanband's Mix
Track 1 - Not my cup of tea, but i see the appeal. It's catchy, heartfelt, and pleasant. I'm at least glad that it's more "Jimmy Eat World" and less "Plain White T's", but i probably won't check out anything else from these guys based on this.
Track 2 - Again, not too much my thing, and probably won't check out more from them. But... i don't hate it. Nice chilled vibe, and the plaintive vocal style actually suits the song well.
Track 3 - I love Busdriver. His fast rapping style never fails to put a smile on my face. This song makes fantastic use of the samples. Great choice.
Track 4 - Haven't heard these guys before, but i like what i hear. He could definitely benefit from toning his vocals back just a little. Kind of over emoting a tad. But i still really like it. Will definitely check out more from them.
Track 5 - Didn't work. Will give my thoughts later if you re-up this track.
Track 6 - Wasn't expecting much from the terrible band name. Lovely piano intro though. Not much of a fan of the vocals. I'd like to hear him sing over a fragile plucked acoustic guitar, ala Elliott Smith, maybe. I guess he sounds better (well, he fits the music better anyway) in the second half of the song. But the music throughout the whole song is nice.
Track 7 - I don't like this one at all. At some points the vocals are alright, but the music is so cheesy and by-the-numbers. I couldn't bear to listen to it all the way through, so i skipped to the end, where it sounds like the guitars are being played in the next room. I'm a fan of low budget home recording... when it's done right (BTMI!). This, not so much.
Track 8 - Yessss. Big fan of this band. Amy's voice makes my heart melt. Such a happy, dreamy, and just plain lovely little song.
Track 9 - Again, not my thing at all. So many bands these days sound exactly the same. Same vocal melodies, same muted guitar riff verses... breaking out into wall of guitar "emotional" choruses. Bleh.
Track 10 - One of my favourite musicians. I find it hard to fault any musical project he's ever been a part of. He has a knack for writing genuine, heartfelt songs. Being on the wrong side of 25, i find it easy to relate to his lyrics with each new release too. Such a great song.
Track 11 - I actually like this, surprisingly. They've a great pop sensibility, much like Copeland, The Format, etc. Might check out more stuff from them.
Track 12 - Not the kind of hip-hop that i'm into. Reminds me too much of the rap-rock of the late 90's/early 00's. I half expected him to go "Awwwwww shit!" or "what!".
(At this point, the mix is starting to drag a little, length wise)
Track 13 - I've heard some stuff from her before. The main thing i remember about her, is that she is almost verging on looking like a hipster parody. Coloured Ray Ban's, leg warmers, side-swept bangs, neckerchief. Unfortunately, i don't remember any of her songs though, and this sounds kinda forgettable too. I like some female pop singers, but am not too big on this. It could have been made by anyone.
Track 14 - I could tell by the terrible song title that this was going to be awful metalcore. Even before i Googled them to see a pic, i knew they'd be all straight brimmed sideways caps and blonde highlighted black hair. xHARDCOREx!! Terrible.
Track 15 - Nice guitar work at the start. A little latterday Appleseed Cast-ish. Progresses nicely. Reminds me a lot of Moving Mountains too. Pretty cool. Might listen to more songs from them.
Track 16 - Huge fan of his. He's got such an amazing back catalogue with his various projects. An awesome way to end the mix. So amazingly beautiful.
Overall, some really nice songs on this! Yeah, some i'm definitely not a fan of, but has enough really great songs on it to make it enjoyable :-)
