The New Tragic (http://www.absolutepunk.net/thenewtragic), featuring former From First To Last (http://www.absolutepunk.net/artists/showlink.php?do=showdetails&l=2549) singer Phil Reardon and Dallas Taylor of Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster (http://www.absolutepunk.net/mayleneandthesonsofdisaster) and Underoath (http://www.absolutepunk.net/underoath) fame, have posted the video for "A Half Cocked Smile And Two Guns Blazin'." You can check out the video on the band's Myspace page (http://myspace.com/thenewtragic). The video was directed by Kevin Maistros @ The Squad. The New Tragic recently added Don Arthur from Cute Is What We Aim For (http://www.absolutepunk.net/cuteiswhatweaimfor) to the line-up on bass. The New Tragic are currently busy writing their debut album, which will be released through an as-yet-determined label.

Not too bad...I like bands with multiple vocalists. Does this Phil Reardon remind anyone else of Spencer from Underoath when he screams? And he somewhat reminds me of the A Static Lullaby singer when he sings. And I find it interesting that Dallas Taylor is on keyboards now...he didn't seem to have very much vocal output in the song.

actually, dallas has quite a bit of vocal output on this song.

I like how on Phil's myspace page, it says that he is the singer in From First To Last. Thought that was funny.

So many of the parts that phil is screamin, I thought were Dallas. It sounds distinctly like him, so I don't know. This is a bit weird.

i still think that this song in particular sounds like something off of underOath's TOCS. i have only heard a few songs, but i really hope they're a little bit different.
as for the video... chicks crawling all over the band in a limo? seriously? oh wait... is that still the rock n roll dream?
i had high hopes for this band.

i think alot of people are looking at who is being shown on the video during each scream... don't do this! if you notice, phil is singing every single part in the video! dallas is doing most of the screams in this song i do believe, however, someone with a bass guitar strapped around his neck isn't exactly the person you want to focus on in a video. i could be wrong, but dallas' scream is rather unique... would be tough for Phil to pull that off, plus he never screamed like this back in FFTL.
the kid with the hoody looks somewhat homosexual to me.

They have similar voices. The rest of the material they've been working on is amazing. I really had a great time with these guys, and I think one thing that needs to be said here when people compare them to UnderOATH and From First to Last is that it's not like they're just old random members. These two were the founding leaders of both their bands, and were the creative minds behind the success of both ventures. So I would be surprised if you DIDN'T pick up on the similarities of both bands combined into this, because it's from the same people who made the others.
Not to say that they're stuff all sounds the same, but there are obvious similarities since they're from the same minds that started both fires.
I just want to know if anyone else thought the video is questionable (referring to the chicks) especially considering Dallas is married!!

Yea but this sounds a lot like underoath TOCS, and dallas had nothing to do with that. The underoath on that cd is a completely different underoath from when dallas was around.

Right but these songs are also just the demos, and from what I heard while in Ocala with the band, and what other things you can gather from the rumors flying around (Shinoda, Pharrell producing) etc I call honestly say I believe (Objectively) that Phil intends on doing something slightly different by introducing more of a Hip Hop influance and "Big Sounds" incoprorated into the actual Album.
The demos are there to sell them to the labels, and labels want to see "FFTL and UO combine" because their soundscans combined (alone) mean built in album sales, and built in fan base.
Regardless of anything, they're very deserving individuals both Phil and Dallas, who did a TON of work only to get dumped on by their band mates (In one way or another) and so I say.. bravo to the least, for not calling it quits.

I loved it. I had a great time staying with the guys at their home in Ocala. I used to live in Orlando for a couple years and I loved it there, too. Ocala is not as active, but being around Phil, Gideon, Zach, and Eddie was a real blast in itself. There's always something to do with them, in a town that's pretty boring otherwise.
Florida in general is nice, but it's really flat. I prefer the green hills of the Pacific North West... but if I could just figure out how to Import the cool people from Florida.......

definitely not trying to sound like a dick here... but does anyone else find this video to be a bit weird with the chicks all over dallas seeing as how his main project, maylene, is a band that is pretty forward with their christianity? i'm not saying he isn't a christian or whatever, but it just seems a little odd to see all of the girls all over him. alot of ppl that have seen it have thought it could lead to an image that is contradictory? anyone agree? disagree? no matter what, i stand by this guy... he makes music unlike anyone else. absolutely loved the dude when I interviewed them... extremely nice guys in maylene.

So Christians are not allowed to have clothed girls all over them?
I'm not saying that, however... it is a lustful image... thus something you wouldn't exactly want to advocate as a Christian. On the other hand, it could be a poke at the representation of women and fame in videos and in the end, they ARE clothed. Could be a few different things.
To me, it does seem like a bit of a poke at how we represent women and fame in music videos; however, there is room left in the video for us all to question. With the whole, hip-hop vibe that has come about since Shinoda and Pharrell came into the picture, this theory would kinda make sense. Like I said, I'm not ragging on the guy... I am all for him. Just trying to see what everyone else thinks.

agreed... Phil did little to no screaming in FFTL... it was mostly Travis... so its only natural to assume to screaming is Dallas
In the early underoath EPs Dallas sounds more like a much more metal screamer, with very very deep screams. In this video the screams are much milder, and more alike spencer (the current underoath vocalist). So if it is dallas screaming then it does appear that he has mellowed his screams a touch to sound more like the current and more popular underoath.
Of course in FFTL Phil sang and travis screamed, so i think phil is just doing backup screams in this song, which does kinda suggest dallas is doing the main screams.

Yeah, Phil did in fact scream and sing in FFTL and was quite good at it (better than Sonny for sure!). Their performance at FurnaceFest 2003 was incredible. So I wasn't trying to say that Phil did none of the screaming in FFTL; however, I was saying that his screams back in FFTL sounded nothing like Dallas' screams now. Everyone can keep talking trash and what not, but the fact of the matter is this: These guys may be doing music that you think is played out, but they're doing it better than damn near anyone else out there and they are about to be reaping huge benefits from their talent. Chances are, if were on this fucking message board, we shouldn't talk shit on guys that are living their dream in music.
Also, perhaps I overlooked the description of the video underneath it, but glad to see this is indeed the whole satirical view thing. Nice job.
Yea but this sounds a lot like underoath TOCS, and dallas had nothing to do with that. The underoath on that cd is a completely different underoath from when dallas was around.
This is nothing uniquely new and has been done before better in the past.
I read in an interview that Dallas actually did have to do with some of the writing for TOCS, one song I remember they said that they wrote with him was "Reinventing Your Exit" too, so it's possible that that might be why it sounds like that.
-Aaron-
04/09/06, 12:11 PM
Dallas did write a few songs from TOCS, most were re written though after he left. Underoath was going to post-hardcore no matter what it seemed.

This is the real story no one has ever heard.
Phil sang 1 verse and 1 chorus in my heart your hands. You might be asking yourself, wait, isnt there more than 1 chorus?! YES! THERE IS!!!
Phil sang those parts maybe a hundred times before he could get it right, and even then the engineer had to fake double, distort, and auto tune the shit out of his voice. ALL the singing on the rest of the song including back ups were done by either Matt. Travis and Matt did ALL the singing on the rest of EP and Phil only did screaming parts which were few.
And lets go ahead and address phils personal myspace account that to this day still says he sings in FFTL... MOVE ON DUDE! And by moving on i dont mean "start another band that sounds like underoath and fftl mixed together".

Great Thread. Insults. Band Members Fueding. Mother and Homosexual References.
If that video was not made for a major label pick up (aka $$$) then I do not know what is. Plenty of focuses on the pretty guitar player, and the screamer, with Dallas in the background. It's an "anti" video with the chicks (or so the bands myspace says lol) anyways, to settle everything. So when we see these guys on TRL next summer let's just remember, they were our dirty little secret first.

Ricky Terror, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. FFTL change their stories about Phil every single time. One minute they'll say "Phil was never in the band." and then 20 minutes later they'll answer a question with "Well when Phil left the bend...." - Phil made FFTL, he got it organized, wrote their shit, and did ALL the singing. Sonny wasn't even a part of the band till one week before it's release. Check the dates on Photoshoots, and who is in the photos.
You're telling us that Sonny re-wrote and recorded an entire album, production was re-done, and albums reprinted and pressed in one week? He sang Phil's stuff, and even some of it isn't even Sonny on the album! There's actual legal stuff going on about all of this, which none of you know anything about except Phil. So, finger over mouth about it.
It doesn't take Phil hours to get something write, hell I've sang with Phil in his house to some stupid shit just BSing around and he has a great ear for pitch. He knows what he's doing.

first and foremost, i would be STOKED to be in such a glam-shit band like FFTL. i would be doing sooooooooooooo much coke! man!
seriously though, i rememeber when i first heard FFTL and i thought "man, this is so generic and yet still good enough to call good". then, i remember when they split like right before Epitaph and they were like "were bringing in a sixteen year old to do our vocals". THAT was the moment I knew...this band was going to suck more dick and make more money than 90% of bands out there.
