Where'd you get that info? I'm stoked for this cd. Where did vomiting winter go? I'm also surprised this is basically just over a month away and we haven't heard any new songs or much of anything from the band. I am seeing them on the Thursday tour and definitely excited.

And Manipulator was AWESOME. I still don't understand how anyone could dislike it. If anything, dislike the fact that they ruined the ghostship demos with the release of phantom.

The track listing has been out for probably a week now (I think I first saw it on ultimate-guitar?), so I was surprised it wasn't on here just yet. Like everyone, I'm not sure what's happened to "The Vomiting Winter". There's been speculation that the song title was changed for the new album, but there's been nothing really other then heresy to support that statement. Oh, and I should also mention Rody Walker from Protest The Hero is providing guest vocals on "Dirty Pillow Talk".

Sick. I used to be a member of the tfot forums way back when before they took them down and ever since I have been behind on the news, but they are probably one of my top 5 favorite bands.

I think Vomiting Winter is gonna be a B-side.
I think it'll be a combination of the Phantoms vibe and Manipulator.
They won't remake Doppelganger, that'd be stupid. Seems that's all people want from them. Manipulator was spot on.

My opinion constantly changes between Doppelganger and Manipulator for fav album by TFOT, so I'll be pretty content with whatever direction they decide to go with this album. IMO they've always put out quality stuff.

im not gunna get into a genre argument with you because they are pointless. those bands classify themselves as progressive, as do many music websites, so thats what i call them. i am sure that pretentious d-bags like yourself would love to disagree, however. But personally, i really don't care.
TheFaceOfZach
08/20/09, 07:55 PM
Circa is kind of experimental, so they could be defined I guess as prog. The Number 12 Looks Like You is very progressive, anyone whose seen them life knows that (It was with Jase only on the last day of their tour with Protest the Hero). The Sounds of Animals Fighting again, fairly experimental. Could be seen as progressive.
The guy isn't entirely wrong. We all see bands differently. Some people say The Black Dahlia Murder is just death metal, I think and see that they are melodic death metal (yes, there is a difference). So really, it's in the eye of the beholder is where I'm going with this.

I still think you are wrong, the only reason i stopped caring is because i found out you were a genre nazi. I do like prog, in fact it is my favorite genre for the time being, i just dont like what you consider prog, so i guess your point is correct. People who like the fall of troy don't like what you consider to be prog rock. Of course, maybe to someone else what you listen to isnt quite prog enough, or maybe what i listen to is the real prog. This is all opinionated and thus there is no point to go on and on about it.

Actually, according to the bands' myspaces and last.fm, the bands i listed are prog, so it is an opinion. Im not saying you can label any band prog and its true because you said it. Im saying that bands that sound prog, and are labeled as such, are indeed prog if much of the public believe so, as is the situation with the bands i listed. It's not like im pulling this out of thin air.... i have other people/sites to back me up, where im sure noone would support a claim that nickleback is prog. I can say Jay-Z is makes experimental folk-pop and the whole world could agree with me; it doesn't mean I'm right. Most of the time bands usually do tour with other bands that fit into their target demographic. In a few exceptions they don't. However, I could easily see how Deftones fans would appreciate TFOT as both bands seem to attract a diverse fanbase. As for Thursday inviting Young Widows out on tour with them, that also makes sense. Not everyone who likes Thursday is a scenester. They also have a pretty diverse fanbase.

who a band tours with does not necessarily reflect their target market. At The Drive-in toured with Rage Against The Machine even though their market was infinitely different. Thursday has started to regularly tour with bands like Young Widows that don't fit their scenester market.
...and Terry Date?
I would say their age and the fact that they have breakdowns is what initially made them appealing to the "underoath" crowd as you put it. Whether or not that is their target market, you can't deny that they are talented. If you really listen to their work, there is a lot more going on than just tapping and chugging. I just found it odd that someone could dismiss them so quickly.

proves nothing. Steve Albini produced Nirvana. Nirvana's market wasn't at all the same as the stuff Steve Albini produced.

Their work is awful. It's just boring wanking, bad screaming and bad singing. I could go to guitar center and hear the same thing. meh. someone buy me decent recording equipment. i have 4 delay pedals. i could do this shit.

Unfortunately I can't argue against an "I can do this shit" maneuver. Fair enough though. I understand it's not for everybody.

haha thanks, it's easily my favorite song by him as well... that whole album is really one of my favorites.
I think everyone will love the new TFOT album.. it's heavy and noodly like Doppleganger, but still retains some of the poppier, straightforward elements of Manipulator.
yeah FABOTH is a great album and i'll take your word on the new TFOT, i'm stoked to get my pre-order.

This post gives me an amazing idea and I think Chris will be on board with this... We combine dumb teenagers love for Underoath and the recent band wagon fanbase of the Beatles, combine the two and you get:
FABOATH
The single greatest gimmick, get rich quick scheme since Thomas Erak discovered delay pedals!
Anyone who likes money, get on board with this.

doppelganger is possibly my favorite cd ever, and manipulator might be the biggest dissapointment i've ever had in anticipation of an album.
fall of troy really sucks now, i saw them live again last week with thursday and everything was terrible. their set sucks and is now watered down from the glory days where they could rip through their self titled, dopp, and early manipulator tracks. thomas is a wanker, and their instruments sounded horrible...i don't know what happened to his AD140 but it sounds so thin and has no articulation.
anyway dopp was an awesome blend of aggression, fast paced awesome guitar work, prog song structures, poppy melodies and harmonies, and hardcore breakdowns. everything since is seemingly a cheap imitation of that album....manipulator had its moments, but the best songs were the ones being played whilethe doppelganger tours were happening, like seattlantis, or AMAPACP.
i've heard a couple new songs from the album, live and from the studio, and i don't know, it just isn't hitting the same spot for me. oh well, maybe i just outgrew their style....i do still love doppelganger though, great album.

You have to take it for what it is,
I honestly think they're just getting better. Doppelganger was a great album, and Manipulator was far from a disapointment.
I've listened to Manipulator far more than I ever did Doppelganger when it came out. I love how every album Thomas just gets more and more agressive and pushes the lyrics farther and farther, Laces Out, Dan is nothing compared to Problem?!, they're just growing more as musicians and I respect that,
I know it's a really cliche thing to say, but it's the truth, they're growing and putting more into their albums now, which I'd rather have than their first record that was recorded over a spring break in high school.
Though, I still love that first record.
And as far as the way they sounded, it may have been the venue not meshing with their sound, seeing them on a headlining slot is better than seeing them as support. Though, I still love seeing them anyway

all time favorites are on Doppelganger and Manipulator, too early to tell with ITUE

I don't know what the fuck happened to these guys.
Does maturing mean becoming generic and playing shit songs that you would hear on the radio? What happened to their element of math rock, Thomas' clever lyrics, the aggression, everything? It all seems so watered down.
Big fucking disappointment for me, I guess they won't go back to the Self-Titled/Ghostship EP/Doppelganger days. What a shame.
I even enjoyed Manipulator. But this? Fuck, it broke my heart when I listened to this shit because I know they can do better than this garbage.

Vocally, it sounds like on some tracks their vocalist is trying to rip off Nate from Finch. Not in a good way either, I'm taking about the crappy prog finch.

I agree, I haven't heard the new cd but when I heard the opening to Panic Attack I thought the guitar tone was a joke. Idk if I outgrew this band, or they actually aren't good anymore or what, but I can't see myself becoming excited for any future release.

Agreed. Well for me its like a split between that and doppelganger but its 51/49 in the favor of manipulator
Haven't listened to this album all the way through yet but I think i'll be kind of disappointed. we'll see. Regardless, TFOT tore it the fuck up last night in MPLS. I posted their setlist in the setlist forum

The song writing is top-notch, but the guitar tones and Thomas' voice sound wierd. Otherwise it's decent.

it blows my mind people think manipulator is in any way better than doppelganger.
the guitar tone is worse, teh vocals are worse, the songwriting is worse, the entire production is worse.
and someone said that laces out is nothing compard to problem? ...problem is obscenely generic cock rock compared to laces out
Same story. The music is great and the vocals are weak.
They should probably add a vocalist that can sing to their band. Although Thomas Erak probably would never allow that.

Actually i was getting quite tired of their old stuff, as I've heard it too much, and I was hoping that this record would save them for me. It didn't. I may have just grown out of the genre though, I can't tell.

I just said I couldn't tell if I was..... and I made the username right before the release of ITUE when panic attack was released, which is one of the songs on the CD I actually enjoy. The song got me pumped up, and for lack of a better user name, I used this one.

I just don't think you should complain all that much, it's still a sweet user name regardless of it's reference.
Honestly, I have no idea what happened to this band. No matter which way I go around it, these guys suck now. Their first album was decent for a bunch of 15/16 year olds. Doppelganger was genius. Pure genius. The harmonies, attention to detail, originality, lyrics, vocal melodies, effect layering, amazing guitar melodies, manipulation of volume and eq's to produce climax and suspense underlyingly. Doppelganger is a testament to Post-Hardcore genius. Ghostship demos was a shitty recording but was amazing nontheless. Now Manipulator. A lot of people liked it. I personally didn't like it much. For some reason they completely changed the tone of their guitars, amps, distortion to this very shitttty sound. Ironically Tom has gotten a vocal coach for this album yet he was singing at a ridiculously off tone for of the songs. His singing voice sounded muffled and unlively and out of tune while his screaming definitely lacked the same intense energy as before. The only reason this album was perceived as decent because they had incorporated either b side songs from doppelganger or doppelganger like elements. Such as Seaattlantis being from the old days (although the newly recorded vocals just totally screwed it up). And songs like ex-creations which just used concrete fall of troy formula goodness to a measely C instead of the previous A+'s. I was shocked and devastated seeing one of my favorite bands ever fall like this, but I had hope. Phantom on the Horizon came out. The new song additions were good I really dug em. The remake though wasnt that great. Because again the guitar, amp, and distortion tone SUCKEDDDD. The singing was more out of tune and lacked luster, screaming was nowhere near as good. And some of the new changes they made lacked the rawness of the old version. It reminds of my of old saosin with anthony green, where they were so damn raw, and then when he was gone saosin tried to adopt this "professional" sound which made em sound more plastic, losing that gritty rawness. But alas since phantom did come from the amazing backbones of ghostship it wasnt all bad. But then In the Unlikely Event came out. It was my last hope for these guys. And man you know i really really really tried to like this album. But it just sucked sooooo much. The guitar, amp, distortion tones got even worse somehow. HIS SINGING GOT EVEN MORE OUT OF TUNE SOMEHOW!!!. They adopted very very very shittly done pop sounds. If ur gonna do pop, do it right come on. There were decent riffs, but they were followed up by messy unharmonious cheap "oh well this sounds decent right?" riffs just lazily assembled. This album made manipulator look very very decent for me. I gave up on these guys. And wondered what went wrong. I really did. How can someones vocals get worse in like 2 years. How can his vocal coach screw him up. How could you knowingly downgrade your rig's tone quality. How could you abandon your signature crazy screams. HOW?... I understand they didnt want to be doppelganger forever and i support those changes. But my god do it well. Circa Survive took hugggge leaps in musical direction from juturna/on letting go to the more hard hitting blue sky noise. Although in some ways I like on letting go sound more, blue sky noise was done so damn well in its new direction/category, that i cannot ignore it as a great album to listen to whenever i want a more hard hitting direct sounding circa survive. Fall of Troy shouldve just disbanded after Phantom. I hope the band since breaking up is doing well though. Doppelganger and Ghostship are by far some of the best things I have ever come across in the world of rock. Peace.
