The Machinist -Never heard of it.
Road to Perdition -Saw part of it, and it had amazing acting.
Unbreakable -Anything M. Night makes should be on this list.

Cinderella Man - I rented this, but the DVD didn't work. I was really looking forward to seeing it. Great movie
Equilibrium - Never saw this. It looked interesting. Think the Matrix meets 1984, really badass action scenes
Iron Giant - One of the best animated movies I've ever seen. yes.
The Machinist -Never heard of it. came out a year or two ago? Christian Bale had to lose something like 120 lbs to play the role, and its a mindfuck of a movie
Road to Perdition -Saw part of it, and it had amazing acting. Tom Hanks is the man
Unbreakable -Anything M. Night makes should be on this list. yeah, and Im sick of hearing people talk about all his movies by saying "well, its not the Sixth Sense" that pisses me off because all his movies are quality
Primer -Never heard of it. Think Time Travel to go back to time travel to the future to time travel to the past. complex plot, you have to watch it a few times to understand it fully, but its great
Shaolin Soccer -Loved it. yep. what did you think of Kung Fu Hustle? I love that one too

the machinist was one of the best movies i've seen in years. as was road to perdition. i agree wholeheartedly with those two.

shaun of the dead and big fish don't get mentioned nearly enough in recent great movie discussions.

i'd also add ginger snaps and the weather man. return to paradise and clay pigeons are extremely underrated, but they go back a lil more than five years.

we need to start a thread for overrated movies too. i can think of a bunch of those

The Iron Giant, flat out, except that was 7 years ago. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang was easily the most underrated movie of the last year. That movie knocks noir, thriller, comedy and action stereotypes on their ass, subverting them until what they present is not only ideal but should be the norm. I agree with Minority Report, that was a criminally underrated Spielberg flick, and I'm going to go ahead and say Munich also even though it was nominated for Best Picture, it just was too divisive and tragically so, people didn't recognize how well Spielberg has honed his craft in films like that. Also, the Village was crap and the only people who really didn't think so are M. Night fanboys, or from who I have met previously. Seriously, it doesn't hold a candle to Signs or The Sixth Sense. I wasn't a fan of Unbreakable either. He is far too reliant on the twist as a storyteller, to the point where it hurts everything about his filmmaking, not to mention the Village was probably the most telegraphed twist in the history of film. Well at least since the Others.

Also, Mullholland Drive was subversive and "tricky" to the point where it seemed like a shadow of a movie - I thank it for getting Naomi Watts into Hollywood, but I do not thank it for being a waste of my time. Also, Shaolin Soccer is terrible. Absolutely terrible. Kung Fu Hustle owns, but man, SS is just trash. Keep in mind, the thread says of the past 5 years. A large portion of these movies are not within 5 years, it's sort of becoming all time underrated movies. As a uber-fanboy of this movie, I'm going to go with Serenity also. Best Sci-Fi in years upon years.

Cinderella Man I disagree with this only because it doesn't seem underrated. I haven't talked to anyone yet who has seen this and not liked it. Great movie!
Equilibrium I haven't seen it yet but my brother has it so I can watch it soon enough.
Iron Giant Definitely a good one (and yes underrated)
The Machinist Great choice for this thread. Great movie that nobody knows about.
Road to Perdition I was not a fan of this movie. Sorry can't agree on em all.
Unbreakable I love M. Night. (this wasn't his best but still great)
Primer I actually haven't heard of this one.
Shaolin Soccer Stephen Chow is a genius. Kung Fu Hustle is just as great! (if not better)

all great movies that most of my friends dont like, or dont know
