Now that it's April, and you've already heard (and subsequently crossed off) members of your "most anticipated" list - what's your new most anticipated of the rest of 2006 list?

1) Thursday - definitely excited to see how this one turns out. counting 54321 is alright, and at this velocity seems pretty impressive, but i'm hoping for more growth than i've heard with these songs.

2) Cursive - no cello, but there are 5 piece horn arrangements. there's a split and an ep (i think) coming out before the full length. tim kasher can do no wrong.

3) Brand New - really hoping the boys here can live up to their potential. this will get me shot but deja entendu is really just OK. there are brief (sometimes very very breif) flourishes of genius on that disc, but it seems like they were just a bit to reserved in dumping their ties to the whole 'pop punk' thing.

4) Radiohead - i don't know if this is gonna come out in 06 or not. they don't have a label yet, and i don't think that'll be sorted out anytime soon. last i checked the disc wasn't done either. they're bringing back an OK Computer era song called 'nude' for this. there are some bootlegs of it. great song.

5) Owen - it's mike fucking kinsella. enough said.

6) Desaparacidos - no idea if this record ever got past the demo stage but a boy can hope right?

7) Dave Bazan - yeah, pedro the lion broke up, yeah it sucked... but dave wrote almost everything anyway. here's hoping for more 'control' / 'winners never quit' -esque material.

8) Kevin Devine - he was demoing for the new one last year, right?

That's all i've got off of the top of my head, but i'm sure there's more.

Highlight of the year thus far: The Appleseed Cast or Grandaddy

I had to read this twice just to make sure you didnt throw out a subtle dab of sarcasm, or weren't joking.

are you serious?

deja entendu is one of the most complete (alongside Clarity) albums released in the last 6 or 7 years, possibly further. there is not a bad track on that record, and no two songs sound alike. while other bands such as taking back sunday are concerned with rewriting their breakout album all over again, jesse took the chris connely apporach and rewrote his entire band as a whole.

honestly, i hate jizzing all over jesse's face too, but BRIEF flourishes of genius?

give me a break.

a few examples:

" I've got desperate desires and unadmirable plans. My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent"

"Barely conscious in the door where you stand
Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes its demands
You laugh at every word trying hard to be cute
I almost feel sorry for what I'm going to do
And your hair smells of smoke
Who will cast the first stone?
You can sin or spend the night all alone"

(Up the stairs: the station where
the act becomes the art of growing up.)
He keeps his hands low.
He doesn't wanna blow it.
He's wet from head to toe and
his eyes give her the up and the down.
His stomach turns and he thinks of throwing up.
But the body on the bed beckons forward
and he starts growing up.

"Ever since I was young your word is the word that always won.
Worry and wake the ones you love.
A phone call I'd rather not receive.
Please use my body while I sleep.
My lungs are fresh and yours to keep,
Kept clean and they will let you breathe.

Is this the way a toy feels when its batteries run dry?
I am the watch you always wear but you forget to wind. "

get outta my face . jesse lacey is covering topics and writing lyrics most song writers wish they could put on a record. you have it opposite, my friend. thre was BRIEF moments on deja that AREN'T 100% genius.

as for me, i'm looking foward to the new cursive (tim kasher, like matt pryor, can do no wrong), and the new shins.

while you make a good argument, I cant help but agree with the original post. deja was very good, but not great. brand new has a very hard time figuring out who they are, and who they want to sound like. "quiet things" and "failure by design" is brand new at its best, because its BRAND NEW, not a band trying to sound like bright eyes, or whatever. even though those too songs are their popiest, they are really the only two songs that stand apart from other bands. I really hope they can find a sound that they are comfortable with this time, and not just mimick the latest trend.

i certainly wasn't calling the lyrics inadequate. it's the melodies / song structures...

for example, sic transit gloria... absolutely fucking fantastic bass hook. insane. really really really good. and yet piss poor excuse for a chorus. it sticks out like a sore thumb. it was like the band said "yeah well that part is pretty bad ass, but where do we put the pop punk". the entire album (for the most part) is killed by moments like that.

the kids have talent. bucket loads of it. i just hope they don't box themselves into a genre that doesn't even deserve them...

1) Glassjaw

Following interviews Daryl says they're looking at recording something in Spring (so Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere). They've got 4 songs down at the moment and are taking it slow. The core of Beck and Daryl is still there so I have faith it will be the album of 06.
